    The effect of solar radiation pressure and atmospheric drag on the orbital dynamics of satellites-on-a-chip (SpaceChips) is exploited to design equatorial long-lived orbits about the oblate Earth. The orbit energy gain due to asymmetric solar radiation pressure, considering the Earth's shadow, is used to balance the energy loss due to atmospheric drag. Future missions for a swarm of SpaceChips are proposed, where a number of small devices are released from a conventional spacecraft to perform spatially distributed measurements of the conditions in the ionosphere and exosphere. It is shown that the orbit lifetime can be extended and indeed selected through solar radiation pressure and the end-of-life re-entry of the swarm can be ensured, by exploiting atmospheric drag

Este artículo considera el contexto de la creación y la performance del drama, las conexiones entre la obra y otros textos abolicionistas narrativos, y la cuestión de cómo y por qué Tapia se vale del teatro para tratar el tema de la raza y el colonialismo. Semejante a otros textos decimonónicos, La cuarterona proyecta la imagen de una identidad colectiva emergente que refleja el reformismo liberal de la época.     Hispanic Caribbean Theatre on the Move: Crossing Borders, Redefining Boundaries

    This essay reflects on the disciplinary trajectory of a course that I have taught both in foreign languages and literatures and in ethnic studies on the theme of migration in Hispanic Caribbean theatre. Crossing disciplinary borders sharpens our understanding of how theatrical performance has registered the complex social, economic, and political networks that connect the Hispanic Caribbean to the United States. Moreover, I argue that the viewing of Cuban, Dominican, and Puerto Rican theatre through a diasporic and transnational lens helps explain in part its marginalization in Latin American theatre studies, a field still dominated by national frames of reference. Exploring interdisciplinary approaches to teaching Latin American theatre not only resists the “border control” exerted by institutional units and academic disciplines but also helps redefine the field and spotlight its unique contributions to social scientific and humanistic inquiry.Peer reviewed

    This article examines the figure of Lucy Boscana who was cast as counterpoint archetypal mothers of the national family in René Marqués’s La carreta (1952) and Francisco Arriví’s Vejigantes (1958). I contend that Lucy Boscana’s repeat performances – over 800 of them – of the jíbara mother Doña Gabriela haunts the Puerto Rican stage to the extent that it eclipses the Afro-Puerto Rican mother Mamá Toña in the Puerto Rican cultural memory. My argument considers the use of blackface and the construction of the female body as object of the male gaze as central factors in the erasure of black subjectivity from the Puerto Rican stage.Peer reviewed

    "Home is Where Theatre is": Performing Dominican Transnationalism

    This essay argues that a transnational approach to Dominican performance reveals a wealth of theatrical activity that addresses Dominican-U.S. migration. Like the characters in their plays who perform the social scenarios of migration, the creative endeavors of playwrights and performers such as Elizabeth Ovalle, Zaida Corniel, Chiqui Vicioso, and Josefina Báez are psychically and materially invested in more than one geopolitical space. Framed by critical approaches from Latino theater studies and migration studies, the analysis of the theme of return migration in four pieces by these authors shows that for transnational migrants, “home” can be conceived of as pluri-local and mobile. Their plays thus help to re-conceptualize dominicanidad from a diasporic perspective and to counter stereotyped portrayals of Dominican migration.Peer reviewed

    The Aesthetics of Minor Transnationalism in the Theater of Frank Disla

    This essay argues that the search for a new audience, for new stories, and for a new aesthetics in the theater of Frank Disla is emblematic of the dialogue transnational Dominican theater practitioners have begun with the national “script” for Dominican culture and identity. I suggest that the insistent formal experimentation in plays about migration by Disla is suggestive of the transnational artist’s pursuit of new forms of political and artistic belonging. Not only do Disla’s characters explore the ontological condition of belonging to more than one society (or perhaps none), his own dramatic oeuvre occupies an unsure space in literary history as well.Peer reviewed

    Kademuren: Haalbaarheidsonderzoek naar een Camilla caisson voor grote kerende hoogtes

    Het afstudeerwerk betreft het uitwerken van een patent van de Ballast Nedam Groep. Het patent heeft betrekking op een caisson gebruikt als kademuur. Het afstudeerwerk is geheel volbracht binnen de Ballast Nedam Groep, in een tijdsbestek van 9 maanden, 1 september 1985 tot 30 mei 1986. Het patent omvat een caisson als kadeconstructie. De Caisson is genaamd Camilla caisson. Kenmerkend hieraan, is de naar achteren hellende achterwand en bijbehorende uitsparing in de bodemplaat. In het eerste deel van het afstudeerwerk is de veronderstelde optredende reductie van de horizontale grondkracht op de schuine achterwand van de caisson in gebruiksfase onderzocht. Dit is gebeurt met en semi-plastisch, interactief, eindige elementen methode programma. Deze studie is uitgevoerd bij de sectie Geotechniek. In het tweede deel van het afstuderen is een ontwerpproces doorlopen. Er is een inventarisatie gemaakt van mogelijke soorten kadeconstructies. Van deze kadeconstructies is een eerste selectie gemaakt. In een volgende fase is van de overgebleven kadeconstructies een ontwerpberekening gemaakt. Aan de hand van de hieruit voortkomende afmetingen voor de constructie is een prijscalculatie opgesteld. Hierna zijn de uitwendige afmetingen van de Camilla caisson voor een kerende hoogte van 30 meter, geoptimaliseerd. Met de hieruit voort gekomen resultaten, zijn de mogelijke uitvoeringswijze van de caisson bekeken.     La narrativa 'padana' di Gianni Celati: due letture geografiche a confronto

    In the Italian literary panorama, Gianni Celati occupies a complex interstitial space between fiction and field investigation. His significant narratives dedicated to the Po landscape has become the symbol of an ethnographic research, in which the author has chosen to play the role of a simple ‘mediator of stories’ to return the ‘hearsay’ of people. This paper intends to offer two different geographical readings relating to these writings, recalling both the humanistic and territorialist approach of geography. The final goal is twofold: on the one hand to understand how the territory was perceived by the author and on the other to identify the territorialization process inherent in the tales themselves
