Migration and the economic crisis in 2010 Italy
The current economic crisis, which affected all the developed countries, has deeply
affected economic productivity also in Italy. The unemployment rate changes rapidly and tends to
increase, while the job market becomes more and more selective The immigrants are one of the first
categories to be deeply affected by the crisis, with marked differences among the most developed
regions (most of all the ones in Northern and Central Italy), and the least developed ones (as in
Southern Italy). Within every region, though, there are noticeable differences between metropolitan
areas, manufacturing districts, tourist districts, agricultural districts and marginal areas.
Our paper tries to offer a glimpse over the forced change in the migration projects that took place in
the different Italian contexts during the economic crisis. Given the difficulty of obtaining updated
statistical data about the shift in professional activities and about the returns of migrants to their
countries of origin, we use mainly updated reports from a few selected research institutions. In
particular, we will try to identify what are the relevant problems that affect the integration in schools
and in the residential patterns. The recent changes that occurred in 2010 are caused by the new
economic situation. We will also briefly mention in our analysis the role that media discourses and
the political ideology have in encouraging return migration, by reinforcing negative stereotypes,
racial discrimination, the "fear of the other", and other successful electoral campaigns targeted at
making immigrants potential scapegoats for the economic crisis
Migration networks, critical issues and the resurgence of borders in the contemporary migratory flows to Italy
Italy between stable immigration and migratory emergencies
Italy, a country characterized by a long history of emigration, has been a destination for immigrants, with growing numbers of incoming flows, only since the late 1980s. Immigration became a consolidated field of research in the early 1990s; two of the most important publications on this subject, the yearly Reports published by the Caritas/Migrantes and the ISMu Foundation, reached in the year 2010 respectively the twentieth and the sixteenth issue. Within this interdisciplinary field of study, the geographical approach found a significant place, with at least a fifteen year-long tradition of field researches and theoretical investigations studying the slow transition from an initial emergency phase to a more consolidated process of formation of a multicultural society. The recent (from December 2010 till now) events in Northern Africa, though, are marking a resurgence of an emergencial dimension of migratory flows towards Italy. While the foreign born population reached in the country the number of four millions, numerous landings of boats full of immigrants on the shores of the Italian territory marked a new insurgence of social and political attention towards the phenomenon. The presentation will outline the recent evolution of the migratory phenomena in Italy, with particular attention to the territorial images presented by the mass media
The international mobility of university students: reflections from two case studies in two mid-sized cities in Northern Italy (Parma and Vercelli)
Geography of migration, citizenship and belonging in contemporary Italy, Recent developments in the light of economic global crisis
The weak ring of the chain: Immigrants facing the economic crisis in Italy
The article offers a synthetic overview of the main effects that the international economic crisis has had on immigrants in Italy. After a brief introductory explanation of the main characteristics of the Italian context of immigration, the authors concentrate on two main problems: the immigrants’ access to the labour market and to the housing system. The so-called “social vulnerability” of migrants was increased by the tensions related to the economic crisis. The growing problems that immigrants have been facing in the last three years are linked to the territorial distribution and to the mobility of the migrant communities on the national territory. The tendency to a progressive redistribution of the migratory destinations and to an increased mobility within and outside the Italian national borders are among the consequences of the socio-economic difficulties suffered by migrants. Finally, a few conclusive remarks suggest some policy recommendations
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
