The acquisition of disjunction under negation and ‘ni ni’ construction in French.

    No full text
Pagliarini, Crain, & Guasti (2018) showed that children acquiring Italian start to attribute a “neither” interpretation to negative disjunctive sentences, but converge to the adult “at least one” interpretation earlier than children acquiring Japanese or Mandarin. This earlier convergence is attributed to the already adult interpretation of a lexical form that expresses the “neither” interpretation unambiguously (recursive n ). We further test this proposal with French negated disjunctive sentences, where a similar lexical form (recursive ni) is available, but with different properties than in Italian. We conclude that, for an earlier convergence to the adult interpretation of OR under negation, what matters is the availability of a minimal pair of expressions and not just of an expression that conveys the “neither” meanin

Messa a punto del metodo microbiologico per il dosaggio dell'acido folico nel latte

    No full text
After considerating all the methods to determine folic acid in food, we chose the microbiological assay. However the classic method has been modifiedto improve its reproducibility; then this new methodhas been used to determine the vitamin in some samples of milk differently treated with or without folic acid added

Short-time thermal response test based on a 3-D numerical model

    No full text
To assist the design of ground heat exchangers the thermal response test method is usually performed. In its traditional version the thermal response test data are compared with the line source model solution to restore the soil thermal conductivity and the borehole thermal resistance. This approach requires that a steady-state thermal condition is approached and, consequently, it may need up to about 50 hours to be carried out. Promising approaches can be found within parameter estimation procedures supported by 3-D numerical tools. They allow the reduction of the test duration, since they perform a more realistic description of the system’s behaviour especially in the early regime. In this paper, a versatile parameter estimation procedure based on a 3-D numerical model of a geothermal system is presented. The procedure is aimed to restore the value of both the soil thermal conductivity and the borehole thermal resistance, by using only the first few hours of the thermal response test data. The approach is validated by comparison with a medium-scale set of experimental laboratory data

Sensory and instrumental assessment of olive oil appearance

    No full text
This work aimed to establish parameters concerning colour and turbidity of extra virgin olive oils by comparing consumers' visual perceptions with analytical measurements using a tristimulus colorimeter and a turbidimeter. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was applied to explain the differences between the various oils in terms of analytical parameters (L, a, b and NTU) and sensory attributes (Yellowness, Greeness and Turbidity). The results showed that the instrumental and sensory parameters are strongly correlated

Local heat flux estimation inside tubes through conjugate gradient method with adjoint operator: application to the pulsating heat pipes case

    No full text
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to apply the conjugate gradient (CG) method, together with the adjoint operator (AO) to the pulsating heat pipe problem, including some quite interesting experimental results. The CG method, together with the AO, was able to estimate the unknown functions more efficiently than the other techniques presented in this paper. The estimation of local heat transfer coefficients, rather than the global ones, in pulsating heat pipes is a relatively new subject and presenting a robust, efficient and self-regularized inverse tool to estimate it, supported also by some experimental results, is the main purpose of this paper. To also increase the visibility and the general use of the paper to the heat transfer community, the authors include, as supplemental material, all numerical and experimental data used in this paper. Design/methodology/approachThe approach was established on the solution of the inverse heat conduction problem in the wall by using as starting data the temperature measurements on the outer surface. The procedure is based on the CG method with AO. The here proposed approach was first verified adopting synthetic data and then it was validated with real cases regarding pulsating heat pipes. FindingsAn original fast methodology to estimate local convective heat flux is proposed. The procedure has been validated both numerically and experimentally. The procedure has been compared to other classical methods presenting some peculiar benefits. Practical implicationsThe approach is suitable for pulsating heat pipes performance evaluation because these devices present a local heat flux distribution characterized by an important variation both in time and in space as a result of the complex flow patterns that are generated in this type of devices. Originality/valueThe procedure here proposed shows these benefits: it affords a general model of the heat conduction problem that is effortlessly customized for the particular case, it can be applied also to large datasets and it presents reduced computational expense

Design of a functional box for take away pizza

    No full text
Pizza is one of the world-famous Italian dishes because of its simplicity, taste, nutritional value and low cost. It is usually consumed at specialized vending points, which also offer a take-away service. The packaging must guarantee adequate protection against rapid temperature decrease and water vapour elimination, to maintain quality. In this paper the performance of a traditional corrugated cardboard container is compared with that of a new package, realized with expanded polystyrene and a water-absorbing polymer. The tests performed (water absorption, WVTR, thermal insulation and sensory profile) showed that the new packaging was better than the traditional one. The 'consumption life' of take-away pizza was increased, allowing the product to reach consumers nearly in the same condition in which it left the oven: warm and not softened
