ClimHub. Una sperimentazione di resilienza integrata

    No full text

Images making places: the role of image rhetoric in shaping the housing ideal in London

    No full text
This article considers visual design as a complementary form of strategic planning that relies on images to sway the approval of future housing developments. The study of promotional materials in the city of London provides an opportunity to reflect on the relationship between represented and constructed space and on the rhetoric employed by the neoliberal real estate market. For this reason, the research is based on a transdisciplinary approach that merges hermeneutics and urban sciences. The results showed a strong correspondence between the alteration of the represented reality and the perception of the built environment. This trend is connected to a more general tendency towards the financialisation of architecture, which focuses on space simplification and the primacy of feelings. This exacerbates both visual and spatial inclusion processes, allowing us to address issues of access to housing, justice, and equity as a lens to observe and unpack a global trend with precise spatial outcomes

Real Estate and Marketing Rhetorics. The Rise of Heritage in the Face of Global Financialization

    No full text
The contribution proposes to observe the inclusion of symbolic elements linked to the notion of heritage within the images used to promote domestic interiors in regeneration projects. This operation is conducted in two of the most important cities at the forefront of the housing crisis: London and Shanghai, and reveals remarkable parallels between Eastern and Western modes of communication and representation. The financialization of space, which had profoundly transformed the way we value, perceive and desire domestic intimacy opens up issues of space falsification, and distortion of the social models of reference. What these projects present us with are fictitious narratives that selectnot only materials, but also inhabitants, ambitions and social projections. What is new is the aggressiveness of the process linking the construction of spaces and the shaping of the subject, and the enhanced use of references to cultural elements able to secure economic returns. Their reassuring character stabilizes the perception of investment, forcing us to reflect on how we shape a specific idea of the city through images, and for whom we do so

Housing narratives. Stories of distortion, promotion and originality linked to the marketing of heritage

Reading the neoliberal city is a complex operation. Volatility, fleetingness, and transience have shifted the object of production so much that some critics assert that the production of images and systems of signs, rather than of goods, has become the main vocation of capitalism. Now finance, more than governments, benefits from the promotion of urban imaginaries. The speed and spread of their use, shadows an increasing aggressiveness in the process of city making that selects and hides chosen parts of the reality through the use of spoken and visual narratives. Their accessibility imposes to go beyond their commercial significance, and to think about vision as «a social act, technically manipulable and historically variable, through which meanings, believed, identities, values are elaborated». The observation of the global real estate market and the dominant rhetoric that inform its language enables to reflect about who really produces place and for who

The Production of Heritage : the politicisation of architectural conservation

The ‘Production of heritage’ is a truism – history is made consecutively and collectively, now becomes then, the everyday becomes rare, and rarity becomes desirable and attainable at a cost. This process becomes politicised when we look at heritage either as a product or as a process that can and is constantly adjusted and adapted according to requirements. As with any product, we have to ask what it is for, who does it serve, how much will it cost and what benefit does it give. This seemingly obvious set of questions are however very poorly answered when considering heritage. ‘Authenticity’ and ‘significance’ as words already lack precision, as we see in the glossary of terms that we include at the start of each chapter. These terms are accepted definitions, but also provocations to our habitual acceptance of words and their meanings. If significance is only understood by consultants, authorities and developers via the ambiguities of a specialised language of standards and protocols, then that ambiguity is open to manipulation, particularly if the rhetoric around their use is exclusive rather than transparent

Ikon seeks Icons : image Related Rhetoric for Place Production in London

If it’s well known that construction of space is both material and imagined, and that representation proved to be key in this process as for Debord, Benjamin, Lefebvre among the others, a fresh look can be taken to the image-related rhetoric for place production in London. Two assumptions are guiding this observation: the digital nature of promotional images and their changed role in the production of urban representations, and the background of an expanding luxury market dominated by economic-political bounds and foreign investments. The idea of utopia is explored here through the shaping of subjectivity within neoliberal mode of place promotion and production
