Turnaround Management: An Explorative Investigation of the Strategic Leadership Competencies for the Turnaround of Indian IT Firms

    No full text
This academic research determines the competencies and attributes required of the TMT for turning around Indian IT firms. It evaluates the efficacy of the leadership attributes for successful recovery of a distressed company. These attributes are known to promote superior performance for a leader to become a turnaround benchmarkable specialist. The author’s interest in choosing the Indian IT sector is also kindled due to its contribution to the country’s economic growth. An interpretivist, inductive approach has been used in this study. By conducting a mixed-method research, the researcher has sourced primary data from 32 respondents - using the technique of purposive sampling – drawn from senior management cadre of renowned Indian IT firms. The research tool is a questionnaire with open and closed ended question. The quantitative responses were tabulated and thematic analysis was conducted on qualitative data. Secondary data was sourced from the previous literature - academic, non-academic sources and business documents. The data analysis and findings of this study were revelatory in addressing the three themes – functional, social and cognitive competencies. Managerial abilities and domain knowledge if not adequate will blunt the impact of turnaround initiative. Similarly, cross-cultural skills are pivotal too. Likewise, corporate learning and development if found wanting in TMT can prolong the turnaround process. The TMT would immensely benefit from the above cited findings and insights. Since the author has based the findings on extensive primary and secondary research , the study will further contribute to the literature on corporate turnaround

Studies in the Amenability of Kolhapur Bauxite to Bayer's Process-Parts I and 11

DETERMINATION of the digestibility pattern of the bauxite samples is the most important step towards the design of an integrated alumina plant principally based on Bayer's process. Of all the aluminous minerals, the trihydrate gibbsite is the most amenable to Caustic digestion, and diaspore the hardest to treat. Altekar and Mathadt proceeded to determine the mineralogical set-up of the Kolhapur bauxite. The samples were obtained by the senior author from seventeen different pits dug to an average depth of 17' in a 30-acre plateau on top of a 3,000' high hill near Udgcri. The deposit has been since estimated at 3'5 million tons of bauxite. The findings of the author were that the principal and predominant mineral of alum-inium is gibbsite and it was therefore predicted that its response to caustic treatment would be quite favourable. Thic paper records the results of detailed investigations concerning the digestion of the bauxit

Millets are in the family of cereals grown globally with differential importance across continents and within regions of the world. Cereals are staple foods for a large proportion of the world population. The present investigation was carried out to find out the effect of different retail packaging material on the shelf-life of dehusked foxtail millet. The foxtail millet was procured at local Raichur market. Physical properties of dehusked foxtail millet viz., Particle density, Bulk density, Angle of repose, Coefficient of internal friction, Coefficient of external friction, Length, Breadth, Thickness, size and Spherecity were found to be 1.34 g/cc , 0.87 g/cc, 27.26°, 0.34, 0.27, 2.02 mm, 1.28 mm, 1.12 mm, 1.43 mm and 70.78 % respectively. Biochemical properties of dehusked foxtail millet viz., fat, fibre, carbohydrate, ash, protein, moisture content were determined initially to be 5.68 %, 4.76 %, 64.77 %, 1.64 %, 13.80 % and 9.35 %, respectively and there was no insect infestation before storing the commodity. Three types of packaging materials were used for retail packaging (1 kg) namely polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terapthalate (PET). The dehusked foxtail millet packed in different packaging material was kept for storage studies for 6 months. Quality analysis and insect infestation were checked regularly at the interval of 1 month. Finally it was concluded that for retail packaging PET was found to be best, based on its improved quality parameters and minimized insect infestation and also to prevent the damages due to insects and nutrient losses

Drying Characteristics of Freshwater Fish (Coilia dussumieri) using Solar Tunnel Dryer

An experiment was carried out to study the drying characteristics of a locally available, low-value and underutilized freshwater fish (Coilia dussumieri), commonly known as Monangu, using solar tunnel dryer. Samples were treated with salt (25% w/w) for 1 h to improve the shelf life of the dried product. Salt treatment reduced the initial moisture content of fresh fish from 271.08% (d.b.) to 153.16% (d.b.). Salt treated and control fish samples were dried in a solar tunnel dryer and under open sun. Drying time for salt-treated fish samples was 13 h (27.77% less) in solar tunnel dryer as against 18 h in open yard sun drying. The fish samples were dried up to the safe moisture content (below 10% (d.b.)). The biochemical and microbiological analysis of dried fish revealed that the salt treated fish dried in solar tunnel dryer had superior quality compared to other treatments
