Thermal stability of soil carbon pools: Inferences on soil nature and evolution
The quantification of soil carbon pools is a pressing topic both for the agriculture productivity and to evaluate the Greenhouse Gases (GHG) sequestration potential, therefore a rapid and precise analytical protocol for carbon speciation is needed. Temperature-dependent differentiation of soil carbon in compliance with the DIN (German Institute for Standardization) 19539 standard has been applied for the first time on 24 agricultural soil samples from the Po River Plain (Italy), with the aim of investigate their thermal behavior in the 50−900 °C interval. The results invariably show the existence of three soil carbon pools having different thermal stabilities, namely, thermally labile organic carbon (TOC400), residual oxidizable carbon (ROC) and total inorganic carbon (TIC900), in the intervals of 300−400 °C, 510−600 °C and 700−900 °C, respectively. Significant relationships have been observed between the above mentioned organic and inorganic carbon pools and the associated isotopic composition: 1) inverse correlation between TOC400/ROC and δ13C links thermal stability and soil organic matter (SOM) composition; 2) direct correlation between carbonate breakdown temperature and δ13C denotes the mineralogical association of the inorganic pool. The results give clues regarding the nature and evolution of soil carbon pools

After an introductory part devoted to illustrating the birth of anthropological science fiction, the article analyses the ethnographic sensibility present in the fiction of Ursula K. Le Guin. A very prolific author and daughter of anthropologist Alfred Kroeber, throughout her production Le Guin demonstrates an interest in anthropology that goes beyond the presence of ethnographers as protagonists of her novels, and extends to the dimension of cultural criticism that characterises the discipline. Le Guin is also an essayist, who ventures into literary theories of pressing relevance, a point of reference for authors such as James Clifford and Donna Haraway

Antitumor activity of the proteinase inhibitor tetra-p-amidinophenoxyneopentane in a nude mouse model of human melanoma
An aromatic poly-amidine (tetra-p-amidinophenoxyneopentane, TAPP-Br) exhibiting anti-proteinase activity and known to exert antitumor activity in vitro was analysed for its ability to inhibit the in vivo growth of a human melanoma cell line transplanted in nude mice. 5 x 106 melanoma cells were injected subcutaneously in groups of nude mice and treatment with TAPP-Br was performed (0.125-1 mg/0.2 ml injections, repeated three times at the beginning of the experiment and after 20 days). After 25 days tumors displaying a volume of 0.9-1.8 cm3 were detectable in control untreated mice. Mice treated with TAPP-Br on the other hand did not develop sizable tumors or consistenly developed tumors of significantly smaller sizes. Despite these therapeutic effects, significant chronic toxicity of the compound was observed when administered at higher dosage (500-1000 μg). These side effects, which may hamper the therapeutic use of TAPP-Br, are likely to be circumvented by alternative routes of admi..
