    Desenvolvimento de um protótipo analisador de vibração de baixo custo para uso em manutenção preditiva

    Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro Tecnológico, Programa de Pós- Graduação em Engenharia Mecânica, Florianópolis, 2014.No presente trabalho foi desenvolvido e avaliado um protótipo de equipamento de análise de vibração de baixo custo, incluindo o micro controlador Arduino Due, e acelerômetros da nova tecnologia de micro máquinas MEMS, visando os requerimentos mínimos estabelecidos num programa de Manutenção Preditiva padrão. O Arduino Due é a última versão dos micro controladores Arduino e permite a comunicação entre o acelerômetro e o computador, já que incorpora os protocolos de comunicação SPI e USB. O acelerômetro digital MEMS é o elemento fundamental do protótipo, considerando a sua natureza capacitiva e custo muito inferior ao sensor piezo elétrico padrão, torna-se uma alternativa no desenvolvimento do protótipo. A avaliação do protótipo foi realizada em laboratório e em campo, mas, mostra diferenças consideráveis ao ser comparado com o equipamento de análise do laboratório. As principais deficiências do protótipo são instabilidade nas medições ou medições diferentes em dias diferentes, os espectros de frequências apresentam variações de amplitude e impossibilidade de realizar uma análise em tempo real. Mesmo assim, deve-se lembrar que os elementos selecionados para o desenvolvimento do protótipo são os mais econômicos do mercado, e portanto, um aumento na qualidade pode incidir favoravelmente nos resultados das medições em futuras pesquisas

    Favourably effective formulation of sodium iodide and salicylic acid plus professional hygiene in patients affected by desquamative gingivitis

    The aim of this prospective pilot study was to evaluate the efficiency of an oral hygiene protocol, in combination with a solution of sodium iodide associated to salicylic acid (SISA), in patients affected by desquamative gingivitis (DG). Twenty patients not totally responding to conventional topical therapies, were selected. They received oral hygiene instructions with non-surgical periodontal therapy in a 21-day cohort study (during 3 weekly appointments). The SISA was used at the end of each session, with an impregnated gauze (with 5 ml of the solution) applied for 15 minutes for the upper jaw, and for a further 15 minutes with a new gauze for the lower. Evaluated clinical outcome variables included the full mouth plaque (FMPS) and bleeding (FMBS) scores, probing depth, patient related outcome and clinical gingival signs. Two months after concluding the planned protocol, a statistically significant reduction was observed for FMPS (P=0.032), FMBS (P=0.038), reported pain (P=0.000) and gingival clinical improvement (P=0.005).     Pimecrolimus vs. tacrolimus for the topical treatment of unresponsive oral erosive lichen planus: A 8 week randomized double-blind controlled study

    Background: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory disease, affecting nearly 1-2% of the population; Proposed therapies are usually symptomatic and numerous drugs have been used, but recently, it has been published that there is insufficient evidence to support the effectiveness of any specific treatment as being superior. To the best of our knowledge, direct evaluation of the efficacy of topically applied pimecrolimus and tacrolimus in the treatment of atrophic-erosive OLP, refractory to topical steroids, is still lacking. Objectives: To assess the efficacy and safety of topical calcineurin inhibitors for unresponsive OLP. An 8 week randomized, double-blind controlled trial, followed by a 6 month follow-up period. Patients were treated with either pimecrolimus 1% cream or tacrolimus 0.1% ointment, both mixed with an equivalent amount of 4% hydroxyethyl cellulose gel. The medications were to be applied twice daily for 2 months. Each patient was examined at the beginning of therapy, and then every 2 weeks during the treatment and every 3 months of follow-up. Main outcome measures were: (i) to compare the effectiveness of topically applied pimecrolimus and tacrolimus; (ii) to evaluate which is more cost-effective; (iii) to determine which drug is faster in reducing signs and symptoms and (iv) which gives the longest remission. Results: Thirty patients were involved in the study. Both drugs were effective at inducing clinical improvement, with no statistical difference. Pimecrolimus creams revealed a significantly better stability of the therapeutic effectiveness (P = 0.031). Conclusion: Both medications would currently appear to be a treatment of choice for patients with unresponsive atrophic-erosive OLP. Pimecrolimus seemed to be more effective in providing long-term resolution of signs and symptoms. Future efforts are however needed to obtain more objective evidence of the benefit of these medications in the treatment of immunologically mediated oral mucosal lesion. © 2013 European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology

    Herpes simplex virus type 1 in subgingival plaque and periodontal diseases: Meta-analysis of observational studies

    Background and objectives: This meta-analysis of observational studies (PROSPERO registration number CRD42021236054) sought to investigate strength and generalizability of the association of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) in subjects with plaque-induced gingivitis and periodontitis, since the data from literature are contrasting. Material and methods: Case–control and cross-sectional studies, investigating HSV-1 in subgingival plaque/crevicular fluid and periodontal status, were searched through MEDLINE via PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar. From each study the crude odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (95CI) was extracted, and the pooled OR was assessed for periodontitis, chronic and aggressive, and gingivitis. The meta-analytic method was chosen based on the level of heterogeneity. The generalizability of results, determined by the meta-analysis bias, was investigated through secondary analyses including sensitivity analyses for study quality, publication bias, and study inclusion, and subgroup analyses for quality of scientific journals that published the primary studies, world Region, subgingival plaque sampling method and study design. Results: Twelve studies were included (738 cases, 551 controls). The pooled ORs were 4.4 (95CI, 1.9–10.2) for any periodontitis; specifically, 2.8 (95CI, 1.0–8.3) for chronic periodontitis, 11.8 (95CI, 5.4–25.8) for aggressive periodontitis and 4.8 (95CI, 2.1–11.0) for gingivitis. These estimates were statistically significant, excluding for chronic periodontitis, resulting marginally significant (p =.05). Secondary analyses on any and aggressive periodontitis, and, partly, chronic periodontitis corroborated the results, while the material was insufficient for secondary analyses on gingivitis. Conclusions: The results obtained indicated that HSV-1 is associated with periodontitis, while data about gingivitis are inconclusive. HSV-1 investigation in subgingival plaque could help assess periodontitis risk and severity and, if causal association were confirmed, could contribute to its control

    A moderate carnitine deficiency exacerbates isoproterenol-induced myocardial injury in rats

    Purpose: The myocardium is largely dependent upon oxidation of fatty acids for the production of ATP. Cardiac contractile abnormalities and failure have been reported after acute emotional stress and there is evidence that catecholamines are responsible for acute stress-induced heart injury. We hypothesized that carnitine deficiency increases the risk of stress-induced heart injury. Methods: Carnitine deficiency was induced in Wistar rats by adding 20 mmol/L of sodium pivalate to drinking water (P). Controls (C) received equimolar sodium bicarbonate and a third group (P + Cn) received pivalate along with 40 mmol/L carnitine. After 15 days, 6 rats/group were used to evaluate function of isolated hearts under infusion of 0.1 μM isoproterenol and 20 rats/group were submitted to a single subcutaneous administration of 50 mg/kg isoproterenol. Results: Isoproterenol infusion in C markedly increased the heart rate, left ventricular (LV) systolic pressure and coronary flow rate. In P rats, isoproterenol increased the heart rate and LV systolic pressure but these increases were not paralleled by a rise in the coronary flow rate and LV diastolic pressure progressively increased. Subcutaneous isoproterenol induced 15 % mortality rate in C and 50 % in P (p < 0.05). Hearts of surviving P rats examined 15 days later appeared clearly dilated, presented a marked impairment of LV function and a greater increase in tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) levels. All these detrimental effects were negligible in P + Cn rats. Conclusions: Our study suggests that carnitine deficiency exposes the heart to a greater risk of injury when sympathetic nerve activity is greatly stimulated, for example during emotional, mental or physical stress
