The Theatre Of Thomas Ostermeier
Thomas Ostermeier is the most internationally recognised German theatre director of the present. With this book, he presents his directorial method for the first time. The Theatre of Thomas Ostermeier provides a toolkit for understanding and enacting the strategies of his advanced contemporary approach to staging dramatic texts. In addition, the book includes:
Ostermeier’s seminal essays, lectures and manifestos translated into English for the first time.
Over 140 photos from the archive of Arno Declair, who has documented Ostermeier’s work at the Schaubühne Berlin for many years, and by others.
In-depth ‘casebook’ studies of two of his productions: Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People (2012) and Shakespeare’s Richard III (2015)
Contributions from Ostermeier’s actors and his closest collaborators to show how his principles are put into practice.
An extraordinary, richly illustrated insight into Ostermeier’s working methods, this volume will be of interest to practitioners and scholars of contemporary European theatre alike

Review of The Theatre of Thomas Ostermeier by Peter Boenisch and Thomas Ostermeier and Directing Scenes and Senses: The Thinking of Regie by Peter Boenisc

Labour Market Effects of Large-Scale Agricultural Investment: Conceptual Considerations and Estimated Employment Effects
Large-scale agricultural investments (LSAIs) in general and their socio-economic implications in particular have been heavily debated in recent years. While some claim that LSAIs are an important catalyst for development in neglected rural areas, others caution that they pose a risk to rural communities' livelihoods. The extent to which LSAIs provide benefits for local communities is hence still contested. This paper sets out to conceptually understand what effects the establishment of a large-scale farm has on the rural labor market in low- and middle-income countries. In addition, we empirically address the question of whether large-scale farming as recorded in the Land Matrix creates or destroys employment. We develop a transition matrix to identify several scenarios based on key determinants of the direct employment creation potential of LSAIs, namely the former land use, the crop type and the production model. We empirically assess the actual importance of these scenarios and the employment creation to be expected from this sample of LSAIs based on labor intensities. We further look into the net employment effects for land formerly used by smallholder farmers. Our analysis shows that LSAIs massively crowd out smallholder farmers, which is only partially mitigated through the cultivation of labor intensive crops and the application of contract farming schemes. This holds true for all regions targeted by LSAIs, although regional differences are found in terms of magnitude. The paper concludes that these effects tend to be large on the local scale (i.e., in the immediate surroundings of the investment site) but small in relation to total national employment in agriculture. However, indirect employment creation related to LSAIs, which is discussed but not empirically addressed in this paper, needs to be taken into account to have the full picture
Tiezzi / Ostermeier, "Questa sera si recita a soggetto" / "Il gabbiano": occasioni sprecate
This article examines the production by Tiezzi, writted by Pirandello and the production by Ostermeier, writted by Čechov. Tiezzi – according to Alonge – exalts the metatheatrical approach of a typical “play within the play”, but the result is negative. More persuasive is the originality of Tiezzi when he penetrates the Sicilian story, full of jealousy and violence, between Mommina and Rico Verri. The production by Ostermeier is absolutely disappointing. Alonge emphasizes the taste for topicality that pushes Ostermeier to stage Čechov in modern dress, changing the words of the text
(Relaxed) Product Structures of Graphs and Hypergraphs
In this thesis, we investigate graphs and hypergraphs that have (relaxed) product structures.
In the class of graphs, we discuss in detail \\emph{RSP-relations}, a relaxation of relations fulfilling the square property and therefore of the product relation , that identifies the copies of the prime factors of a graph w.r.t. the Cartesian product. For -free graphs finest RSP-relations can be computed in polynomial-time. In general, however, they are not unique and their number may even grow exponentially. Explicit constructions of such relations in complete and complete bipartite graphs are given.
Furthermore, we establish the close connection of (\\emph{well-behaved}) RSP-relations to \\mbox{(quasi-)covers} of graphs and equitable partitions. Thereby, we characterize the existence of non-trivial RSP-relations by means of the existence of spanning subgraphs that yield quasi-covers of the graph under investigation.
We show, how equitable partitions on the vertex set of a graph arise in a natural way from well-behaved RSP-relations on .
These partitions in turn give rise to quotient graphs that have rich product structure even if itself is prime. This product structure of the quotient graph is still retained even for RSP-relations that are not well-behaved. Furthermore, we will see that a (finest) RSP-relation of a product graph can be obtained easily from (finest) RSP-relations on the prime factors w.r.t. certain products and in what manner the quotient graphs of the product w.r.t. such an RSP-relation result from the quotient graphs of the factors and the respective product.
In addition, we examine relations on the edge sets of \\emph{hyper}graphs that satisfy the grid property, the hypergraph analog of the square property. We introduce the \\emph{strong} and the \\emph{relaxed} grid property as variations of the grid property, the latter generalizing the relaxed square property. We thereby show, that many, although not all results for graphs and the (relaxed) square property can be transferred to hypergraphs. Similar to the graph case,
any equivalence relation on the edge set of a hypergraph that satisfies the relaxed grid property induces a partition of the vertex set of which in turn determines quotient hypergraphs that have non-trivial product structures. Besides, we introduce the notion of \\emph{(Cartesian) hypergraph bundles}, the analog of (Cartesian) graph bundles and point out the connection between the grid property and hypergraph bundles.
Finally, we show that every connected thin hypergraph has a unique prime factorization with respect to the normal and strong (hypergraph) product. Both products coincide with the usual strong \\emph{graph} product whenever is a graph. We introduce the notion of the Cartesian skeleton of hypergraphs as a natural generalization of the Cartesian skeleton of graphs and prove that it is uniquely defined for thin hypergraphs. Moreover, we show that the Cartesian skeleton of thin hypergraphs and its PFD w.r.t. the strong and the normal product can be computed in polynomial time
