Understanding cognitive ageing: From unraveling inter-individual variability in cognitive functioning to advancing research

Contains fulltext : 318778.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access)As we age, our brains undergo several changes. Yet the extent to which these changes affect our ability to think varies greatly from person to person. To better understand cognitive ageing, this PhD thesis focuses on two perspectives. On the one hand, we investigated why cognitive ageing occurs so differently. We mapped out how brain health, cognitive functioning and (potentially) modifiable factors, such as lifestyle and socio-behavioural characteristics, are related to this. On the other hand, we focused on improving research on cognitive ageing, including by introducing an open dataset and developing a standardised tool for reporting memory interventions. The insights and developments from this PhD thesis contribute to a better understanding of cognitive ageing and provide starting points for future research and interventions aimed at preserving our thinking ability later in life.Radboud University, 27 mei 2025Promotores : Oosterman, J.M., Kessels, R.P.C.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
