The blind spots of secularization
According to several international surveys Spain is among the western countries with the most negative views of Jews. While quantitative data on the topic accumulates, there is a significant lack of interpretative approaches that might explain the particular Spanish case. This paper presents the background, methodology and major results of a discussion group-based study on antisemitism, which was conducted in Spain in the autumn of 2009. The study identifies and locates in different socio-economic and ideological milieus the range of stereotypical discourses on Jews, Judaism and the Arab–Israeli conflict in Spain. Analysis of the group meetings shows that, despite growing secularization in Spanish society, the central explanatory variable for persisting and resurging antisemitism in this country is still religion in a broad cultural sense.N

Detecting pathogens and mounting immune responses upon infection is crucial for animal health. However, these responses come at a high metabolic price (McKean and Lazzaro, 2011, Kominsky et al., 2010), and avoiding pathogens before infection may be advantageous. The bacterial endotoxins lipopolysaccharides (LPS) are important immune system infection cues (Abbas et al., 2014), but it remains unknown whether animals possess sensory mechanisms to detect them prior to infection. Here we show that Drosophila melanogaster display strong aversive responses to LPS and that gustatory neurons expressing Gr66a bitter receptors mediate avoidance of LPS in feeding and egg laying assays. We found the expression of the chemosensory cation channel dTRPA1 in these cells to be necessary and sufficient for LPS avoidance. Furthermore, LPS stimulates Drosophila neurons in a TRPA1-dependent manner and activates exogenous dTRPA1 channels in human cells. Alma, impulso y movimiento según Alejandro de Afrodisia
this paper discusses Alexander of Aphrodisias’ conception of the soul, paying special attention to a specific aspect distinguishing the Alexandrian view from the Aristotelian one: the impulsive capacity or faculty. Firstly, it considers Alexander’s reformulation of Aristotle’s approach to the soul (as a form of the body), a reformulation that is performed in connection with his original reconstruction of hilemorphism. At this point the author makes a special emphasis upon the manner Alexander develops a ‘terraced model’ of hilemorphic composition. Secondly, the treatment of impulsive faculty, with a special focus on the theoretical performance that Alexander derives from taking the notion of impulse, is developed. Finally, Alexander’s reformulation of the Aristotelian psychology of action is also brie y considered in order to account for the sequence of the process of the production of voluntary movement and of action. This is an explicative model that leaves aside the Aristotelian resource to the structure of the practical syllogism, and incorporates the elements predominantly characteristic of the Stoic conception. This, though, does not entail the abandonment of the basic thesis of Aristotle’s stance regarding motivation, as an opposition to socratic intellectualism: the thesis of the primacy of desire, in all its possible ways, as a factor accounting for the origin of voluntary movement and action.Este artículo se ocupa de la concepción del alma elaborada por Alejandro de Afrodisia, con especial atención a un aspecto específico que la distingue de la concepción aristotélica: la introducción de una facultad o capacidad impulsiva. En primer lugar, se considera la reformulación de la concepción jaristotélica del alma como forma del cuerpo que Alejandro lleva a cabo, en conexión con su original reconstrucción del hilemorfismo. Aquí se pone especial énfasis en el modo en el cual Alejandro construye lo que puede llamarse un “modelo escalonado” de composición hilemórfica. En segundo lugar, se considera el tratamiento de la facultad impulsiva, atendiendo especialmente al rendimiento teórico que extrae Alejandro de la adopción de la noción de impulso. Por último, se considera brevemente el modelo reformulado de psicología de la acción que elabora Alejandro, para dar cuenta de la secuencia del proceso de producción del movimiento voluntario y la acción. Se trata de un modelo explicativo que deja de lado el recurso aristotélico a la estructura del silogismo práctico e incorpora, en cambio, los elementos más característicos de la concepción estoica. Other gods, other powers : numinous horror in American literature
The Gothic has literary criticism in an interpretive stranglehold. Despite their wide cultural and temporal sweep, studies of the Gothic mode depend almost uniformly on suspicious reading practices, frequently overlooking the supernatural ideas that initially animated the Gothic and other, lesser-known modes of horror. At the same time, the Gothic mode—especially in its American context—is entwined with Judeo-Christian moral positions and political-historical anxieties, ensuring a human-centered ontological outlook that maintains narrow parameters for what sorts of dark fiction are considered worthy of academic consideration. My dissertation, “Other Gods, Other Powers,” broadens the scholarly conversation about the literary macabre by mapping the evolution of numinous horror, a strain of American supernatural horror writing that imagines the divine in non-anthropocentric and non-anthropomorphic ways, prioritizing pessimism, entropy, and negation over conventionally accepted, Judeo-Christian-influenced understandings of the divine. The numinous, a term denoting the experience of the divine as awesome or terrifying, is the aesthetic category that unifies the transhistorical scope of my dissertation, which runs from 1798 through 1988, covering works by Charles Brockden Brown, Edgar Allan Poe, Mark Twain, Ben Hecht, Fred Chappell, and Thomas Ligotti. An alternative, markedly pessimistic tradition comes to the fore across these readings, contradicting popular understandings of American literature’s supposedly inherent optimism and humanism. Numinous horror narratives depict gods as malevolent, inscrutable, and alien; they re-imagine godhood as a state of omnipotent idiocy only accessible to people at the cost of their humanity. The horror in these works comes from the divine’s absolute inscrutability; the narration of each text must contend with an irremediable lack of knowledge, clarity, and certainty. My dissertation models a kind of reading that approaches a text’s underlying supernatural and metaphysical premises on their own terms, instead of reading them allegorically, symptomatically, or otherwise superstitiously. Pulling from philosophical, theological, and new materialist theoretical conversations, “Other Gods, Other Powers” opens up an oft-overlooked, philosophically rich body of writing to interdisciplinary inquiry by contributing to current conversations about alternative reading practices and genre fiction’s place in literary scholarshipEnglis

textThis report combines queer theory with the cosmicist philosophy of early twentieth-century horror writer Howard Phillips Lovecraft to ask new questions about Herman Melville's treatments of gender and genre in "The Bell-Tower," one of his more obscure short stories. Though the tale has been commonly represented as an exemplar of both the Oedipal complex and Gothic horror, my reading reveals a negative, anti- humanist epistemology and very complex presentations of gender and sexuality at work in the text. This peculiar combination indicates a heretofore-unnoticed line of descent from Melville's story to a still-thriving movement in the horror genre.Englis
Cómo vamos a vivir juntos?
