This study investigated the effect of a cooperative computer-assisted instructional package on upper basic Social studies students’ performance in Nigeria. The study adopted a quasi-experimental design. A simple random sampling technique was used to select two intact classes. The two instruments used were Cooperative Computer-Assisted Instructional Package and Social Studies Performance Tests. All hypotheses were tested using Analysis of Covariance at a 0.05 level of significance. The study's findings showed a significant effect of the treatment on Upper Basic students’ performance in Social Studies (F=18.92, P>0.000); there was no significant interaction effect between gender, age, and the treatment on the students’ performance. The study concluded that treatment was more effective in enhancing students’ performance than the conventional method. Accordingly, teachers should be encouraged to use Cooperative Computer-Assisted Instructional Package in teaching students to sustain gender friendliness in classroom situations

This is a descriptive study that examined the prevalence of domestic violence and effective strategies for tackling its consequences on students’ educational aspirations in Kwara State, Nigeria. The sample for this study was made up of 200 students and 150 teachers drawn from ten secondary schools which spread across Kwara Central senatorial district, totaling 350 respondents for the study. Data for this study was collected through a questionnaire, two research questions were raised and answered and three research hypotheses were postulated and tested. Findings revealed that the prevalence of domestic violence among couples includes pouring acid on one another, the cutting of the manhood by the wife, stabbing one another, pouring hot water on one another, poisoning one another through food or other means, beating, kicking, and slapping the wife. Findings further revealed that effective strategies for tackling domestic violence in Kwara Central are tolerance, patience, an anti-domestic violence sensitization forum, avoiding third party involvement, and the creation of a guidance and counseling unit. Other strategies include the situation where the husband should be held responsible, extra marital affairs should be avoided, husbands should avoid acquiring many wives with a low income, family interference should be avoided, and couples should learn how to say sorry to each other. These would all help to tackle domestic violence in society. It was recommended that the Government should set up an enlightenment campaign for couples to help eradicate domestic violence. There should also be a punishment for those that violate the rules and regulations of tackling the menace of domestic violence. Religious leaders should intensify efforts to fight against domestic violence in the society at large

Parenting is the process of promoting and supporting the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development of a child from infancy to adulthood. The study therefore examined the influence of parental factors on upper basic students’ academic performance in Social and Islamic Studies in Ilorin, Nigeria. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The sample for this study was all upper basic Social and Islamic Studies students in Ilorin. Systematic random sampling was employed to select seven upper basic schools in Ilorin. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 180 upper basic 2 Social and Islamic Studies students. A Pro-Forma was used as the instrument for data collection. Data analysis was done using ANOVA and Scheffe-Post Hoc analysis for research hypotheses. The result of the study showed that there was a significant difference in the academic performance of upper basic students’ in Social and Islamic Studies based on parental educational level and Socio-economic Status, the parental educational level. The finding of the study revealed that there was no significant difference in the academic performance of upper basic students’ in Social and Islamic Studies based on parental occupation and marital status. Based on these findings, it was recommended among other that parents should create enough time with their children especially in the area of communication concerning school activities, expectations of academic performance, the importance of achieving good results and they should always ask, and give encouragement to the children about the importance of homework

Students’ Perception of Difficulty Levels of Senior Secondary School Civic Education Curriculum Content in Osun State, Nigeria: Students’ Perception of Difficulty Levels of Senior Secondary School Civic Education Curriculum Content in Osun State, Nigeria

The learnability of school curriculum has been attributed to students’ perception of different school subjects which also determines the level of students’ performance and ultimately the achievability of the intended curriculum objectives. Studies had been conducted in other subject areas. However, studies of that type are not common in Civic Education which is relatively new in the Nigerian Secondary School curriculum. This paper examines students’ perception of difficulty levels of the Nigerian Senior School Civic Education Syllabus (SSSCES) and the factors associated with their perception. The population for the study comprised all Civic Education students in Osun State, Nigeria. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study and a researcher-designed instrument titled Civic Education Syllabus Perception Questionnaire (CESPQ) was administered to 487 students drawn from 25 Senior Secondary Schools in Osogbo, Osun State, Nigeria. The three research questions raised for the study were answered using percentage, mean and standard deviation statistics. The results showed that the Senior Secondary School Civic Education Syllabus (SSSCES) topics are perceived by students to be of varying difficulty levels ranging from difficult to very simple with an absolute of them being predominantly very simple. The observed difficulty levels were associated with inadequate textbooks, teachers’ presentation of lessons and wide content coverage. These imply that Civic Education is learnable and curriculum objectives are achievable. Based on these findings, it was recommended that teachers should enhance the learnability of the few perceived difficult topics by students through the use of predominantly learner-centred strategies and more learner-friendly strategies to teach the subject

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
