Nieobecności w pracy i niezdolność do pracy spowodowane spożyciem alkoholu w Polsce

    No full text
Alcohol consumption has long been embedded in social and cultural traditions worldwide, yet recent trends highlight its escalating public health implications. Statistically, approximately 1.2 million Poles need treatment, with an additional 4 to 5 million engaging in risky drinking behavior. Poland’s per capita alcohol intake exceeds the EU average, and the country ranks second in alcohol-related mortality within the EU. The economic burden of alcohol-related issues in 2020 was estimated at over PLN 93 billion, surpassing tax revenues from alcohol sales. This study examines the scope and consequences of alcohol use in Poland among workers, emphasizingits societal, health, and economic impacts. The analysis includes data from the Social Insurance Institution (Zakład Ubezpieczeń Społecznych or “ZUS”) on sick leave from 2006 to 2025, which is publicly available in annual reports on sick leave and the reasons for it. The following variables were analyzed: absence from work due to personal illness of persons insured with ZUS due to alcohol consumption (Code C), measured in the number of days (thousands) and the share of all sick leave (%), as well as the causes. The data was analyzed by year, gender, and age group and is presented with descriptive statistics. The analysis showed a consistent rise in sickleave due to alcohol use, with a 51% increase in 2024 compared to the previous year. The most affected age group was 35–49-year-olds, with most absences lasting up to five days, indicating recurrent alcohol-related issues among employees. Countries with effective regulation strategies demonstrate significant reductions in morbidity, mortality, and social costs, suggesting that Poland’s approach should shift toward ongoing, multi-sectoral interventions to address this growing public health challenge. Analizie poddano następujące zmienne: nieobecności w pracy z powodu choroby osób ubezpieczonych w ZUS spowodowane spożyciem alkoholu (kod C), mierzone liczbą dni (w tysiącach) i udziałem w wszystkich zwolnieniach lekarskich (w %), a także przyczyny. Dane zostały przeanalizowane według roku, płci i grupy wiekowej i przedstawione za pomocą statystyk opisowych

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Analysis of interest in vaccination against COVID-19 and other pro-health initiatives at the workplace among employees in Poland

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic re-raised the subject of vaccines and their importance for public health. Given the number of employees, one of the key environments in which vaccination should be promoted is the workplace.Material and MethodsAn original, anonymous and voluntary questionnaire with 13 questions regarding health behaviors of employees in Poland was distributed through HR departments of the companies invited to the research (Computer-Assisted Web Interview – CAWI technique) This publication presents the results of answers to the 3 chosen questions concerning: health issues related to work, interest in health promoting initiatives and following recommendations for physical activity.ResultsAccording to the research presented in this article, 39% of employees in Poland were interested in vaccination against COVID-19. The most popular preventive initiatives are still healthy eating and sport activities. The government allowed organizing vaccinations at the workplace, which gives new opportunities but also obligations and risks. Overall, the potential of a workplace in fighting the coronavirus seems to be used to a very small extent. This carries the need to consult systemic solutions with representatives of employers and occupational medicine practitioners as well as the government.ConclusionsThe workplace should be one of the key habitats for health promoting activities, including vaccinations. The above-mentioned issue should still be the subject of research for solutions tailored to the needs and capabilities of each group (employers, occupational medicine professionals and government). One of the circumstances of promoting the health of employees should be preventive examinations of employees – a doctor’s visit and contact with an occupational medicine nurse. The potential of preventive employee examinations in this area seems to be unused and limited. The level of immunization of employees has an obvious impact on the state of the economy. In view of the voluntary vaccination against COVID-19, this requires educational campaigns aimed at both employees and employers

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
