Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Prostate cancer (PC) currently is the most common cause of cancer in Germany for men. Additionally it is behind the bronchial and the colorectal carcinoma the third most frequently listed cause of death by cancer for men. For the treatment of the localized PC, potentially curative therapy approaches such as the radical prostatectomy, the external radiotherapy and the brachytherapy are available. For patients with a metastasized, hormone refractory prostate cancer (HRPC) no options for curative therapies are obtainable. In these cases the focus is on the palliative objective. Since 2005 docetaxel is the only approved active agent and the chosen therapeutic for patients suffer HRPC. However, until today no systematic standard therapy exists in patients who progressed (PSA-increase) after successful first-line docetaxel therapy. The aim of this study was to analyze the efficiency and the toxicity of intermittent docetaxel-chemotherapy in patients with PSA-increase in the interval after successful first-line docetaxel-based therapy. The data analysis was carried out on 46 patients with metastasized HRPC. 28 of the 46 patients were treated with one cycle of docetaxel-based chemotherapy. 13 patients were treated with 2 blocks and 5 patients with 3 blocks of docetaxel-based chemotherapy. PSA-response, survival time, toxicity and change of the general condition (Karnofsky-Index) were evaluated systematically. SPSS 15.0 was applied for statistic analysis. Under the first application of the docetaxel-based chemotherapy a PSA-decline of ≥50% was detected for 26 (56%) of the 46 patients. For 10 patients (22%) a PSA-decrease of less than 50% and for further 10 patients a PSA-progress was detected. 13 (73%) of the 18 patients who received a second docetaxal-based therapy, showed a further PSA-decline. Three of five patients achieved a biochemical response also in the third application. The biochemical response after intermittent docetaxel-chemotherapy showed no significant differences compared to a single application of docetaxel-based chemotherapy. The median overall survival of patients who received one cycle was 12 months. In contrast, the median overall survival of 18 patients who received two or more cycles of docetaxel-based therapy was significantly longer. With regard to the toxicity and the tolerance of the docetaxel-based therapy, a good tolerance was shown under first-line docetaxel as well as under intermittent docetaxel applications. In subsequent cycles of treatment toxicity did not rise significantly. Under cycle two simply a lighter increase of the haematotoxic side effects and under cycle three higher frequencies of grade 3/4 alopecia and leukozytopenia were observed. A non-significant decline of the general condition (Karnofsky-Index) of the patients could be assessed in the second and the third cycle. The introduction of the taxanes and their derivatives, in particular of docetaxel, opened new opportunities and perspectives in the treatment of the HRPC. With the help of two well-known and independent Phase-III studies it was possible to prove that docetaxal leads to a significant advantage of overall survival compared to the application of Mitoxantron. With this thesis we evaluated efficiency and toxicity of intermittent docetaxel-based chemotherapy and it was shown that intermittent docetaxel applications leads to an increased biochemical response and a significant longer time of overall survival. Thereby the results of a former Phase-II study, which evaluated the intermittent application of docetaxel in line with the biochemical and clinical progress and which showed an increased PSA-response within an overall good tolerance for the patients with HRPC, were reinforced. The present analysis shows, that intermittent docetaxel therapy is well tolerated and shows high response rates in the second and third sequence of treatment in selected HRPC patients, who presented with low docetaxel toxicity, good clinical condition and responded to prior docetaxel-based treatment

Globally, prostate cancer is the fourth most common male malignant neoplasm. In the male population of Western Europe and North America it claims the highest incidence and the second most common cause of lethality of all malignant tumors. In early stage disease, therapy of choice is radical prostatectomy including pelvic lymphadenectomy to detect metastatic spread to the lymph nodes. It is well acknowledged that the presence of lymph node metastasis is a poor prognostic sign. Up to now, it was distinguished between N0- and N1-status, this classification seems to be too simple for a differentiated consideration of prognosis. In recent years, great advances in diagnosis and treatment have been achieved, however, many questions remain. Amongst others, these questions concern the impact on prognosis of different characteristics of lymph node metastasis. The purpose of this study was, on the one hand, to determine the predictability of lymph node metastasis by the use of preoperative surveyed parameters and on the other hand, to show which single factors in positive lymph nodes affect prognostic endpoints. 913 patients from the Department of Urology, University Medical Center Marburg were analyzed retrospectively, 99 patients showed histologically proven lymph node metastasis (10,84%). Median follow-up was 51 months after radical prostatectomy. A data base with the SPSS software was established for the aquisition and statistical analysis of the patients parameters. The evidence for the ability of prediction of lymph node infiltration by the use of the pretherapeutic surveyed parameters clinical stage, PSA and Gleason-Score was clearly shown for each single factor and in multivariate analysis, too, with highly significant values (p<0,001). In a second part of this study, the correlation of the pN-status as well as the different specifications of lymph node metastasis like extranodal growth, lymph node density and absolute lymph node count on the one hand and the prognostic parameters survival, recurrence-free survival, recurrence-free interval and cancer-specific mortality on the other hand, was examined. Therefor, tables, statistical tests and Kaplan-Meier survival estimates were created. Overall survival was not dependent on the pN-status. In synopsis with comorbidities, tendencies were observable. The lymph node status correlated significantly with the frequency of disease recurrence (p=0,046). In the analyzed study cohort and with the given follow-up, time to progression was not correlating significantly with any of the examined parameters. Caused by the nature of slow progredience of prostate cancer, in this study, the follow-up was too short and the particular groups of patients were too small to achieve significant results concerning these questions. Only two out of the 913 patients died specifically by prostate cancer, both of them had positive lymph nodes. The contentment with continence was dependent on surgical technique, there was no evident correlation to lymph node spread and adjuvant therapy, respectively. In summary, the correlation between preoperative parameters and positive lymph nodes could clearly be affirmed. With regard to the examined prognostic parameters, there were tendencies identifiable. Henceforth, there is necessity of accurate evaluation of these parameters in prospective studies with long follow-up-intervals and very big patient numbers. The data base containing the prostate cancer patients of the University Marburg established for this study, will be administered and enlarged with all patients operated in this department in the future, so that there will be possibility of accomplishment of further studies with longer follow-ups and increased patient numbers

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Early continence after radical prostatectomy in patients with early or delayed catheter removal

    No full text
The purpose of this study was to examine if early catheter removal after radical retropubic prostatectomy adversely affects urinary continence. A total of 139 consecutive patients undergoing radical retropubic prostatectomy in 2008 was evaluated. Mean patient age was 65 years. A cystogram was performed routinely on POD 5. In case of a watertight anastomosis the catheter was removed before the 7th postoperative day (group I, 69,1 %, n=96). The remaining 30,9 % (group II, n=43) showed urine extravasation. In this group the catheter was left in situ for another 8 days or longer if indicated (mean 15,2 days). Continence was examined by a standardized pad test, the International Consultation of Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form (ICIQ-SF) and the use of pads/24h preoperative, before discharge the patient from the hospital and at 3 months later. The weight of lost urine (pad-test) was reported and subdivided into 4 groups defined according to the weight of lost urine (continent: urine loss < 2 g). Besides, we investigated if age, body mass index and nerve-sparing technique have an impact on urinary continence. The results of ICIQ-SF we evaluated descriptively by histograms and median. For statistical analysis of pad test we used the Mann-Whitney U-test as non-parametric test for two independent samples. Pearson´s correlation was used to calculate the correlation between urine loss in pad test with age and body mass index. We applied the Mann-Whitney U-test to analyse if there is a statistically significant difference between the urine loss in pad test and nerve-sparing surgery. The significance level was defined as p < 0,05. In the interpretation of ICIQ-SF the group with delayed catheter removal (group II) experienced more severe incontinence before discharge home than group I. After 3 months the results in both groups were comparable: 91,2 % (group I) vs. 93,3 % (group II) had no or mild urine loss. Postoperatively 68,1 % (group I) vs. 60,6 % (group II) experienced continence in pad test or fit in the minimal incontinence category (urine loss in pad test < 9 g). At 3 months 71 % of patients in both groups showed continence. Statistically there was no significant difference. 93,1 % (group I) vs. 90,4 % (group II) experienced continence or mild incontinence (urine loss in pad test < 9 g). Postoperatively mean use of pads/24h was comparable: 3,2 (group I) vs. 3,3 (group II). In summary, in our patient cohort we could show that delayed catheter removal in patients with anastomotic urine leak may affect continence postoperatively but 3 months later the outcomes are comparable (pad test, ICIQ-SF)

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
