Flow Analysis of a Couple Stress Fluid Through Porous Media in the Absence of a Pressure Gradient
This study investigates the steady flow of a chemically reacting couple-stress fluid through a porous medium without an imposed pressure gradient. Using the second law of thermodynamics, we analyze entropy generation and thermal irreversibility in the system. The higher-order differential equations that govern the flow, incorporating couple stresses and porous permeability effects, are non-dimensionalized and simplified to obtain approximate analytical solutions. Key parameters such as the stress parameter of the couple and the permeability of the porous medium are examined to determine their influence on flow behavior and the rates of entropy generation. The results provide insights relevant to the optimization of heat and mass transfer in complex fluid systems with applications in chemical and thermal engineering
Verifiable Code Generation from Abstract I/O Automata Models for Distributed Computing
I/O Automata Models for Distributed Computing Submitted by: Joshua A. Tauber NE43-369 (Signature of author) Cambridge, MA 02139 Date of submission: March 21, 2001 Expected Date of Completion: May 2002 Laboratory where thesis will be done: Laboratory for Computer Science Brief Statement of the Problem: Reasoning about and building distributed systems is notoriously dicult. I/O automata provide a simple mathematical basis for formally modeling and understanding distributed systems. Using a rich set of proof techniques, I/O automata have been used to verify a wide variety of distributed systems and algorithms and to express and prove several impossibility results. IOA is a formal language for describing I/O automata that has been introduced to promote I/O automata-based techniques and to support an integrated software development environment for distributed systems. This environment, the IOA toolset, will support algorithm design, development, testing, and formal veri cation using automated tools. The toolset connects I/O automata together with both lightweight (syntax checkers, simulators, model checkers) and heavyweight (theorem provers) tools
Vertex Isoperimetry and Independent Set Stability for Tensor Powers of Cliques
The tensor power of the clique on t vertices (denoted by K_t^n) is the graph on vertex set {1, ..., t}^n such that two vertices x, y in {1, ..., t}^n are connected if and only if x_i != y_i for all i in {1, ..., n}. Let the density of a subset S of K_t^n to be mu(S) := |S|/t^n. Also let the vertex boundary of a set S to be the vertices of the graph, including those of S, which are incident to some vertex of S. We investigate two similar problems on such graphs.
First, we study the vertex isoperimetry problem. Given a density nu in [0, 1] what is the smallest possible density of the vertex boundary of a subset of K_t^n of density nu? Let Phi_t(nu) be the infimum of these minimum densities as n -> infinity. We find a recursive relation allows one to compute Phi_t(nu) in time polynomial to the number of desired bits of precision.
Second, we study given an independent set I of K_t^n of density mu(I) = (1-epsilon)/t, how close it is to a maximum-sized independent set J of density 1/t. We show that this deviation (measured by mu(I\J)) is at most 4 epsilon^{(log t)/(log t - log(t-1))} as long as epsilon < 1 - 3/t + 2/t^2. This substantially improves on results of Alon, Dinur, Friedgut, and Sudakov (2004) and Ghandehari and Hatami (2008) which had an O(epsilon) upper bound. We also show the exponent (log t)/(log t - log(t-1)) is optimal assuming n tending to infinity and epsilon tending to 0. The methods have similarity to recent work by Ellis, Keller, and Lifshitz (2016) in the context of Kneser graphs and other settings.
The author hopes that these results have potential applications in hardness of approximation, particularly in approximate graph coloring and independent set problems
The Importance of Three Judahite Figures in the Book of Haggai: Zerubbabel, Joshua, and Haggai
Three prominent Judahite figures appear in the book of Haggai: the prophet Haggai, the governor Zerubbabel, son of Shealtiel, and the high priest Joshua, son of Jehozadak. The many occurrences of their names emphasise that the short book of Haggai gave prominence to these figures, more than any other biblical book. This article poses the following questions: Why do we have so little biographical information about the prophet Haggai, not even the name of his father? What were the different roles ascribed to these figures in the book of Haggai? Did they work together as a team or was there conflict between them? Who was the most prominent figure in the book of Haggai? What happened to these figures after the conclusion of the book? The book of Haggai does not provide definite answers to all these questions and different hypotheses will be discussed. There is also uncertainty about the role of these figures after the occurrences reported in Haggai since the other biblical books do not help us in this regard. However, we can conclude that the author/composer portrays them as central figures in the book and the temple building process. We cannot really say that one figure was more important than the other, but Zerubbabel is presented prominently in the final structure of the book. In his conclusion (2:20–23), Haggai prophesies about an eschatological day when the Davidic kingdom will be restored by means of Zerubbabel, Yahweh’s servant and chosen signet ring

The phyllophorid sea cucumbers of southern Australia (Echinodermata: Holothuroidea: Dendrochirotida: Phyllophoridae)
A new monotypic Phyllophoridae (Phyllophorinae) genus Phyllostauros, with author O’Loughlin, is erected for Thyone vercoi Joshua and Creed. We raise Phyllophorella Heding and Panning (subgenus of Phyllophorus Grube) to generic rank. The holotype and three paratypes of Phyllophorus ventripes Joshua and Creed are conspecific with Thyone vercoi Joshua and Creed. We make Phyllophorus ventripes Joshua and Creed a subjective junior synonym of Thyone vercoi Joshua and Creed. One paratype of Phyllophorus ventripes Joshua and Creed is conspecific with Phyllophorus thyonoides H. L. Clark. We reject the synonymy of Thyone okeni Bell with Thyone venusta Selenka. Twelve new species of Phyllophoridae are described for southern Australia, with author O’Loughlin: Lipotrapeza eichleri, Lipotrapeza litusi,Massinium melanieae, Massinium vimsi, Massinium watsonae, Phyllophorella notialis, Thyone flindersi, Thyone joshuai, Thyone kerkosa, Thyone spenceri, Thyone tourvillei, Thyonidiella kungi. Phyllophoridae species reported previously for southern Australia are reviewed: Lipotrapeza ventripes (Joshua and Creed); Lipotrapeza vestiens (Joshua); Neothyonidium dearmatum (Dendy and Hindle); Phyrella thyonoides (H. L. Clark); Thyone nigra Joshua and Creed; Thyone okeni Bell; Thyone vercoi Joshua and Creed. Species Phyrella thyonoides (H. L. Clark) is re-assigned to genus Phyllophorella Heding and Panning. A key is provided for the southern Australian species of Phyllophoridae. We acknowledge the rejection for nomenclatorial purposes by the ICZN (Opinion 417) of the publication by Oken 1815, and hence the current invalid statusof genus Thyone Oken. A petition has been sent to the ICZN for re-validation of Thyone Oken and we retain the use of Thyone Oken provisionally. The petition includes a similar request for re-validation of Psolus Oken

Collegiate Joshua K. Gill Director: Professor Mark Olsen This thesis is an exploration of the process of writing a longer work of fiction such as a novel. It explores the organizational framework in which the author lays the foundation for the rest of the story. Included in this framework are character biographies, a summary of each act, a list of important scenes, and so on. The main work of prose is the first seven chapters of the novel I am writing. It is a coming of age story set at Baylor University. At its core, the story is about finding one's place in life and learning to discern true living and true friends from the many counterfeits the world offers. It is inspired in part by Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises, Eugene O'Neil's A Long Day's Journey Into Night, John Knowles's A Separate Peace, and F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. The events of the story are informed by, but not based on, my own experiences. Within the story, I hope to achieve the element of Ekphrasis, discussed in Sir Phillip Sidney's A Defense of Poesy, which is a fictive dream, or speaking image, that pierces the soul and not only offers the reader a glimpse life as it should be but also inspires them to strive to attain such a life. My target audience is the college student
Manifestations of the ruah in Israel's Deuteronomistic Historiography. Historical and critical analysis of selected Joshua - 2 Kings traditions
Wydział Teologii, Instytut Nauk Teologicznych; promotor pracy: ks. dr hab. Dariusz Dziadosz, prof.
The aim of the dissertation was to consider all the aspects of the literary, exegetical, and theological analysis of the selected passages of Israel's Deuteronomistic Historiography that describe various manifestations of rûah. For the need of the appropriate interpretation of different forms and the meaning of the Hebrew root rwh appearing in the subsequent sections of Deuteronomistic historiography (Joshua-2 Kings), the author carried out the etymological and semantical analysis and described general semantic field for this notion in the introductory chapter. The research tools of the historical-critical method as well as the narrative and intertex trial method employed in chapters 2-4 provided answers to the questions of the objective that motivated the Deuteronomistic redactors of these books in such a frequent and various use of the notion rûah for the description of successive phases of the history of Hebrew generations. In chapter 2, which opens the exegetical-theological section of the present dissertation and constitutes its fundamental core, the author focused on the role of rûah in the pre-monarchic period (Joshua-Judges). The activity of the spirit of YHWH in times of the transformation from the theocratic to the monarchic system in Israel during the rule of Saul and David (1 and 2 Samuel) was the subject of the research in chapter 3. The last stage of the research (chapter 4) comprises the analysis of the texts about rûah referring to the period of the divided monarchy, and included in the books of Kings
