Women's life writing 1760-1830 : spiritual selves, sexual characters, and revolutionary subjects

PhDThis thesis uses print and manuscript sources to analyse and interpret women's life writing at the end of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth centuries. I explore printed works by Catharine Phillips, Mary Dudley, Priscilla Hannah Gurney, Ann Freeman, Elizabeth Steele, Mary Robinson, Helen Maria Williams, Mary Wollstonecraft, Grace Dalrymple Elliott, and Charlotte West and discuss the manuscripts of Mary Fletcher, Mary Tooth, Sarah Ryan, and Elizabeth Fox. Of these sources, five have never been analysed in the critical literature and six have received little attention. Considered as a group, this large corpus of texts offers new insights into the personal and political implications of different models of female selfhood and social being. In chapter one, I compare the religious identities presented in the spiritual autobiographies of Quakers and Methodists. For these women, religious identification provides a powerful sense of social belonging and enables public participation. However, it may also lead to a loss of self in the demand for religious conformity and self-abnegation. In chapter two, I consider the life writing of late eighteenth-century courtesans. These women adapt available models of femininity and female authorship in order to establish themselves as socially connected subjects. However, their narratives also reveal that dependence on the sexual and literary marketplace puts female selfhood under pressure. In chapter three, I explore the eyewitness accounts of British women in the French Revolution. I argue that, for these writers, connecting personal identity to political history is an enabling source of self-definition but it also exposes them to the risks of self-fragmentation. In my focus on the social function of women's life writing, I present an alternative to the traditional alignment of the eighteenth-century autobiographical subject with the autonomous self of individualism. These narratives allow us to reconsider the productive and problematic dialectic between personal expression and representative selfhood, self-authorship and collective narratives, and individualism and social being. They suggest that women's life writing has the potential to be both the self-expression of a unique heroine and the self-inscription of a politicised subject

This study was carried out to determine the effect of bank liquidity on the economic growth of Nigeria. Consequently, three hypotheses were designed to guide the researchers and data were drawn from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) statistical bulletin which covered a thirty three (33) years period between 1980 to 2013. The hypotheses were tested using ordinary least square regression analysis and the econometrics co integration test. The result revealed that; there is a positive and significant relationship between total bank credit ratio and economic growth of Nigeria; there is a positive and significant relationship between total bank deposits and gross domestic product of Nigeria; a negative but significant relationship exist between deposit credit ratio and economic growth of Nigeria. Based on the results, it was recommended that government should motivate banks to grant more loans and advances to the economy; laws should be instituted to prevent the diversion of loans to non-productive sectors of the economy; the monetary authorities should encourage the real sectors of our economy such as the agricultural and industrial sectors of Nigeria. Keywords: Bank deposits; Bank liquidity; Deposit credit ratio Economic growth; Gross domestic product; Loans and advances; Loan ratios; Total bank credit ratio; Total bank deposit

Cutting'aesthetic teeth' : Flannery O'Connor's habit of art

“ ‘O Prison Darkness … Lions in the Cage’; The ‘Peculiar’ Prison Narratives of Guantanamo Bay”

    No full text
Prison memoirs often consider the author’s life of crime prior to incarceration and reflect on the behaviors (e.g., greed) or structural violence (e.g., poverty, racism) that led them to the prison. But what happens then, when as in the case of Guantanamo Bay memoirs, there is no “traditional” life of crime, and incarceration is often unfounded? What happens to the prison narrative when the author remains in solitary confinement with their only humane relationships with those in power? It is of little surprise that such memoirs activate provocative and penetrating reading experiences. While Moazzam Begg’s memoir Enemy Combatant (2006) has received some scholarly attention, in part because he featured in lawyer Mark Falkoff’s edited collection Poems from Guantanamo (2007), there has been no scholarly attention to Murat Kurnaz’s Five Years of My Life: An Innocent Man in Guantanamo (2008), Ahmed Errachidi’s The General (2013), and Mohamedou Ould Slahi’s Guantánamo Diary (2015). This chapter will further engage with study groups I conducted with (ex) prisoners in the UK, discussing Falkoff’s collection, to consider how one of the most controversial penal institutions in the post-9/11 world has produced peculiarly intense understandings, conceptualizations, and experiences of incarceration in the form of first-person poetry and prose

The Concept of Music from Kafka’s The Metamorphosis: Author vs Translator

    No full text
The article was submitted on 30.05.2023. Кафки «Превращение» «War er ein Tier, da ihn Musik so ergriff? ». This article examines the problem of preserving the meaning of the translation of fiction texts. The author refers to the translation into Russian of “War er ein Tier, da ihn Musik so ergriff?”, a phrase from Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. It is argued that in the only translation of the novella into Russian by S. K. Apt, there is an inaccuracy in the translation of this phrase, which distorts the semantics of the source. The article reveals the grounds for the assumption of this inaccuracy in the translation of the outstanding Russian Germanist. They relate to the translator’s intuitive rejection of the concept of musical art, which is reflected in the phrase analysed. While reconstructing Kafka’s thought, the author of the article concludes that Kafka’s work expresses an understanding of music that completely disagrees with the one that distinguishes the classical works of European philosophy of music, forged on the basis of Romantic aesthetics. Kafka has a non-Romantic understanding of music: he refuses to venerate it as an ideal metaphysical essence, reflecting on the nature of the impact of music on the listener. The author puts forward a hypothesis that in Kafka’s work, there is a rethinking of the philosophy of musical art belonging to F. Nietzsche, who opposed music to the non-musical human world, subordinated to logic and language. Kafka radicalises this opposition: in his logic, music alienates people from the rational world, plunging them into an animal, primordially natural state. Gregor Samsa’s sensitivity to music, which he discovers after the metamorphosis, makes him recognise his animal essence, which requires that the analysed phrase be translated as a sentence with a clause of reason (“Was he an animal because music excited him so much?”) rather than a clause of condition (as in Apt: “Was he an animal if music excited him so much?”). The reference to other novellas about “animals responsive to music” (Investigations of a Dog, Josephine the Singer, or the Mouse Folk) reinforces the proposed reconstruction of Kafka’s understanding of music, which, in turn, opens significant semantic layers of the novella related to the interpretation of the images of other characters (Gregor’s family, three guests in Mr. Samsa’s apartment) and its deep tragic content

Figures of Political Incorectness – Sociopolitical Myths and Symbols in Miodrag Bulatović’s Work

Wampir Dracula, świnia Josephine, orzeł Georg, pies Zdeniek i zwierzę Gullo Gullo, to z jednej strony symbole wymyślone przez pisarza i świadomie naruszające polityczną poprawność, z drugiej zaś – pozwalające na stworzenie nowych mitów wyjaśniających fatalizm historii Słowian.‘Figures of Political Incorectness – Sociopolitical Myths and Symbols in Miodrag Bulatović’s work’ this is an article dedicated to literary output of the Serbian author with Montenegrin background and in particular to his individual symbolism from so called exile trilogy which comprises of three novels: Men of four fingers, Gullo Gullo, Peti Prst. With their help the author is dealing with the Mideast sociopolitical myths and also the myth of ‘The Great Slavism’. Vampire Dracula, Pig Josephine, Eagle Georg, Dog Zdeniek and animal Gullo Gullo are from one end symbols invented by the author and intentionally intruding political correctness and from the other they are allowing him to create new myths which are explaining the fatalism of Slavic people’s history.

Genetic Susceptibility to Coronavirus Disease 19 (COVID-19): A Review

    No full text
Background: Certain gene polymorphisms are suspected to contribute to the geographic-specific susceptibility of people to coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19), which may be used as therapeutic targets. Accordingly, this review articulates suspected COVID-19 susceptibility genes to assist researchers and medical practitioners to formulate effective drug and treatment procedure. Method: Reputable electronic academic databases, including PubMed, Springer Link, and Scopus were searched for relevant information on the subject. Results and Discussion: The search identified seven COVID-19 susceptibility genes, which are TICAM2, TLRs, ACE, ABO blood group gene, HLA, and TMPRSS2. Polymorphisms in ACE and TMPRSS2 may increase or decrease the binding of the virus to the human cell, while polymorphisms in TICAM2, TLRs, and HLA may enhance or compromise the immune system. Type O blood group seems to be the most protective ABO blood group because of its abundant antibodies and blood clothing inhibition, while type A blood group is the least protective. The distribution of the polymorphisms is influenced by geographical locations, which could contribute to the worldwide differential vulnerability of people to the disease. Most protective polymorphisms are prevalent among Africans and Asians, which could be the reason for  their less susceptible to the disease compared to Europeans and Americans. Most genes reside on the X - chromosome, which could partly explain the dominance of the severe form of the disease among men than women. Conclusion: Polymorphisms in certain genes may modulate COVID-19 infectivity and severity.  A thorough understanding of the biological mechanisms of these genes may help design a cure

Impact of drying processes on Bryophyllum pinnatum phenolic constituents and its antiinflammatory and antioxidative activities in human erythrocytes

    No full text
The effect of drying on the phytoconstituents, antioxidative, and anti-inflammatory properties of Bryophyllum pinnatum leaves was investigated. The phenolic constituents were characterized using HPLC-DAD. The aqueous extraction was done and various assays (Inhibition of membrane stabilization, albumin Denaturation and heatinduced hemolysis, malondialdehyde (MDA), and reduced glutathione (GSH) contents, as well as superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity), were carried out on human erythrocytes. The fresh portion (89.12 µg/ml) exhibited the highest potential to inhibit heat-induced hemolysis compared to the standard drug—Diclofenac (91.51 µg/ml). Freeze-dried sample showed the highest inhibitory potential on albumin denaturation ([Freeze-dried-330.72 µg/ml], [Diclofenac-318.63 µg/ml]) and membrane destabilization ([Freeze-dried-331.93 µg/ml], [Diclofenac-289.57 µg/ml]) when compared with Diclofenac. Similarly, the freeze-dried sample showed the highest GSH and SOD level and lowest MDA level when human erythrocytes challenged with tertiary butyl hydroperoxide (tBHP) were treated with the extract. This study confirms the retention of a considerable quantity of bioactive constituents of plants when freeze-dried

Perceptions of power in the contemporary american novel
