Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Forging an Organic Nation: Physical Education, Gender and Class (Spain 1939-1975)
The current paper explores the fields of physical education and of women’s sports in Spain during the years of the Franco dictatorship. It analyses the duality of these
fields as both reinforcing unequal power relations and as potential arenas for resistance. The article focuses on the promotion of physical education as part of a wider effort to forge a new Fascist, and later on a National-Catholic, culture.
My claim is that when it came to the issue of physical education and sporting activities
the dictatorship was motivated first and foremost by the belief that the state of the
individual body (both male and female) could affect and shape the condition of the body
of the nation as a whole. Similarly to its early allays — Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany —
the Franco regime adhered to a policy according to which individual bodies had to
be monitored and strengthened in order to insure that they could fulfill the functions
assigned to them by the state. Physical education, competitive sports and military
training, therefore, were viewed as the means for fortifying the body and exposing
diverse populations to the regime’s surveillance and indoctrination techniques. The article examines some of the ways in which the implementation of physical education policies was used by the organizational entities in charge of mobilizing women and girls in order to undermine the official discourse on the role and the capacities of the female body.
The current article examines the relationship between gender, the political culture of Fascism and the construction of public space during the early years of the Franco Regime (1936 – 1945). The article analyses the evolution of the discourse and the politics promoted by the Sección Femenina de F.E.T during that period. It refers to the concept of «political culture» as a set of symbols and discourses that are located within a relatively stable ideological corpus. These symbols and discourse influence and are being influences by a series of political practices and expectations. The objective of the article is to examine the ways in which the Sección Femenina understood the role of women, as agents of political and social change, under the dictatorship and within the political culture of fascism.
Señoritas in blue the making of a female political elite in Franco's Spain : the national leadership of the Sección Femenina de la Falange (1936-1977)
Of all the journals published by the Sección Femenina the monthly Teresa, Revista para Todas las Mujeres, was the most read and the one published for the longest period. It functioned as the official mouthpiece of falangist women between the years 1954-1977, a period in the life of the Franco dictatorship marked by profound political, economic and social changes. The articles, interviews and images published in Teresa constitute a conscious effort to fashion the identity of young, urban middle class women. This effort was part of a large project aimed at creating an audience capable of identifying with the messages and images of falangist womanhood. The article analyses the relationship between gender and class in the Sección Femenina’s discourse and practices as a conservative women’s organization during the final years of the dictatorship and the transition to democracy. Our hypothesis is that during the second half of the 1960s gender issues were prioritized differently within the political agenda of right — wing women’s organizations. This was achieved partly through the manipulation of the concept of class and of class differences. The article analyses these changes by focusing on the ways in which the writers in Teresa described and defined the role of women within two spaces: the space of the home and of family life and the space of work and of professional life.a publicación mensual Teresa, Revista para Todas las Mujeres, fue la más duradera y la más leída de todas las revistas de la Sección Femenina.
The Sección Femenina played a central role in "nationalizing" the Spanish masses.
That organization developed for the first time, throughout the Civil War, a local and national cadre of leaders; its number of affiliates soared from 2,500 in 1936 to approximately 600,000 in
mid-1939; in addition, it came to monopolize (among other corporations) the female branch of
the Spanish union of university students (SEU); teachers 'and nurses' unions; the feminine section
of the youth movement of the Falange and the social service for women. During the war, SF
militants took on different tasks in the rear as well as in the front. Some were of a traditional auxiliary nature (such as nursing, fundraising, cooking and caring for the troops' clothes) and others
of a less conventional nature (for example, espionage or arms smuggling and men sneaking into
the nationalist area).
This article examines the relationship between gender and space within the context of the Spanish Civil War. When analyzing the discourse and the daily practices of women mobilized by the
Sección Femenina of the Spanish fascist party, it studies some of the spatial practices and representations of space that made up the life of the nationalist women of that period. In my view, the
leadership of the SF, as well as many of the women mobilized by the organization during the
Civil War, took an active part in the forging of what some historians have called the political culture of Spanish fascism.
