To wiki or to blog: Piloting social software technologies for assessment in a large first year information systems class

    No full text
This paper describes two exploratory pilot projects using the social software technology (i.e. blog and wiki) for assessment purposes to teach an introductory Information Systems subject at University of Canberra in 2007. Social software technologies known as web 2.0 have gained considerable interest among academics across the higher education landscape. These tools have features that focus on the social construction of collective knowledge, communication, reflection and peer networking. However, while there are many claimed pedagogical benefits, little is known about the impact and effectiveness of social technologies to support innovative approaches to Information System assessment tasks in large classes. In this study the author reflects on the process of integrating social technologies into the teaching syllabus for assessment purposes and presents a reflective account of the outcomes of the trial from both student and staff perspectives. Important teaching and learning issues associated with the development and implementation of social technology based assessment tasks for large classes are discussed. This analysis confirms the importance of usability, workload and 'fit for task' for technology-infused teaching and learning for large classes. © 2008 Sultana Lubna Alam

    No full text
A growing interest in the behaviour of travelers to university campuses has recently emerged whether by university administrators or transport officials. Understanding the modal choice determinants of university travellers increases the opportunity for finding appropriate policies and solutions to reduce traffic congestion and parking needs as well as to encourage active transportation hence achieving more sustainable mobility. This research study investigates the differences in mode choice habits among the various groups of travellers to Sharjah University City (SUC) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), including students, staff, faculty, and university visitors. A revealed preference survey was distributed randomly throughout SUC. Using information collected from this survey, multinomial discrete logit choice models were developed to evaluate the SUC travellers’ mode-choice likelihood for the following modes: car, private bus, public bus, taxi, and active transport (walking and biking). It was found that travel time, travel distance, trip makers’ characteristics (gender, citizenship, car ownership, car sharing, and the number of cars per household), and other contributing factors ( Weathers conditions, Infrastructure adequacy, and bus services quality) are the main factors that affect significantly the mode choice at SUC. Further, a sensitivity analysis was conducted to study how the considered factors influence the mode choice. The developed model can be used in future studies to predict travel demand at SUC in response to new policies and solutions set by university administrators or transport officials

Sleep deprivation and suicidality in adolescent males: a systematic review

    No full text
PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT The objective of this review was to examine the prevalence of suicidality in adolescent males (13-18±1 years old) with sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation is a risk factor and a precursor to high-risk behaviors as researchers suggest insomnia as a marker of suicide as well as an antecedent observed right before suicidal attempts and completed suicides. Examining the contributing factors associated with suicide and self-injurious behavior (SIB) is crucial in preventing suicide. METHODOLOGY The systematic review method was used. The standard three-step search strategy of the Joanna Briggs institute was used to find eligible studies in nine different databases. This review considered experimental and epidemiological study designs including randomized and non-randomized controlled trials, prospective and retrospective cohort studies, analytical cross-sectional studies, and descriptive epidemiological study designs including population based cross-sectional surveys. Adolescent males between the ages of 13 and 18 (±1), with a diagnosed or undiagnosed depression who had engaged in self-injurious behavior (SIB); have thought of death by suicide, attempted death by suicide or have died by suicide and have also reported disturbed sleep. Studies selected for retrieval were assessed independently by two reviewers for methodological validity prior to inclusion in the review. Data were extracted and synthesized using JBI SUMARI (Joanna Briggs System for the Unified Management of the Assessment Review of Information). RESULTS Three research studies were included in this review. All included studies found a strong negative association between sleep duration and suicidal ideation and/or attempts. Of the 56 initial articles retrieved, three full-text articles meeting all inclusion criteria were selected and appraised by two independent reviewers. These included one cohort study and two analytical cross-sectional design study articles. A narrative synthesis of these three articles was performed due to the lack of quantitative data available to perform a meta-analysis. The result of this review shows negative associations between sleep duration and suicidal ideation and/or attempts in adolescent males, which helps support the need for additional efforts in highlighting suicide prevention and overall mental health for this population. The three included studies were self-reported survey based and comprised of 54,631 adolescent males of whom 22,646 (Approx. 42%) reported sleep deprivation. The data from the two included Korean studies (Jang et al., 2013; Park et al., 2019) was collected from the same web-based middle and high school surveys and were consistent in showing the negative association between number of hours of sleep or sleep duration and suicidality. Jang et al. (2013) also included the direct and indirect effect of depression with sleep duration and reported a weaker negative association between quantity of sleep and suicidal ideation or attempts. The Gong et al., (2020) was a cohort type study and collected data from 2016 to 2018, it reported a high odds ratio (OR) for suicidality (OR=2.18 95% confidence interval Cl 1.97 to 3.98, p 1 exposure associated with higher odds of outcome). IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Clinical Practice: This review supports the need for routine and thorough assessment for sleep disturbances and/or sleep hygiene in young adolescent males and intervene as early as possible. Providers can play a significant role in increasing public awareness and providing education to parents, and caregivers/guardians on lack of sleep and its affect a child’s mental and emotional well-being. Healthcare Policy: The prevalence reported in this review define the need for improved screening, increased education, better research and overall improved coordination of care in the community. School facilitated screening such as in the case of school-required screenings for vision or hearing. This would help minimize the gaps in screening in primary care practices or otherwise in the community. Quality/Safety: The project emphasizes the need for better detection of sleep problems to decrease related injuries and/or fatalities. Addressing insufficient sleep can affect cognitive and decision-making skills, poor lifestyle choices, self-medicating, risk taking behaviors, which may lead to often lethal or long-term health problems for these young men. Economics: Addressing sleep deprivation related suicidality has a clear fiscal incentive and doing so can save costs for the entire healthcare system. This includes not only the ED cost but also include the inpatient hospitalization and follow up, the transport or the ambulance, the autopsy or investigation, and the wages associated with it adds to the indirect cost associated with suicides or attempted suicides.D.N.P.Includes bibliographical reference

Improving Healthcare Outcomes for Mentally Ill Children and Adolescents Through Psychoeducation of Parents Utilizing a Mental Health Toolkit

    No full text
Purpose of the Project: Children and adolescents’ caregivers have very little knowledge ofmental health prior to presenting to an emergency room for psychiatric evaluation. Currently, there is no standardized tool for the psychoeducation of caregivers at the project site, nor from any practice guiding organization. The purpose of this project is to create a standardized education tool and to survey the confidence among caregivers to provide psychoeducation about mental health treatment. Methodology: A toolkit was created with a QR code linking to a website including information regarding mental health symptoms, psychiatric screening, treatment, and medication. The toolkit was administered by emergency room staff. The website included a pre and post survey to assess the confidence of caregivers before and after the psychoeducation. These surveys utilized a modified Assessment of Psychoeducation of Carers (APEC) questionnaire with twelve Likert-type questions assessing the confidence of medications, symptoms, treatment, and screening process scored from zero (not confident) to four (highly confident). Results: Twenty-three (23) caregivers participated and completed pre and post surveys. Pre and post survey scores were compared via a paired t-test. The scores indicated a significant increase in confidence (p<0.001) after receiving the implemented psychoeducation via the toolkit showing the psychoeducation to have a positive effect. Implication for Practice: Providing a psychoeducation toolkit to caregivers demonstrated a positive effect on caregiver confidence on mental health care. After receiving psychoeducation, an increase of caregiver confidence can improve a caregiver’s ability to make decisions regarding their child’s treatment. A toolkit can be a cost-effective means of providing a standardized psychoeducation and improving caregiver confidence.D.N.P.Includes bibliographical reference

Effect of Green Gold Nanoparticles on The Expression of Efflux Pump Genes AcrAv and NorA for MDR Uropathogenic Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis

    No full text
Background: With each day, the danger of antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains is increasing worldwide due to the development of resistance mechanisms, including efflux pumps, that are used to expel harmful substances (such as antibiotics) outside bacterial cells. Currently, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are regarded as viable substitutes for eradicating microorganisms. Aim of Study: This study aims to investigate the effect of green AuNPs on the gene expression of two efflux pump genes, the norA gene for Staphylococcus epidermidis and the acrA gene for Escherichia coli. Materials and Methods: The green AuNPs were synthesized using pomegranate peel extract and characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The genes responsible for the expression of multi-drug resistance (MDR) efflux pumps, namely, acrA in E. coli and norA in S. epidermidis, have been identified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and the expression of the abovementioned efflux pump genes of both bacteria exposed to different concentrations of AuNPs (minimum inhibitory concentration [MIC] and sub-MIC concentrations) was assessed using RT-PCR. Results: All bacterial isolates of E. coli possess the acrA gene, and those of S. epidermidis possess the norA gene. The results demonstrated a significant downregulation in the expression of efflux pump genes acrA and norA when treated with green AuNPs, with significant differences represented by P value (≥0.05) 0.009 for S. epidermidis and 0.011 for E. coli, as compared to the bacteria untreated with green AuNPs in standardizing with housekeeping genes. Conclusions: Green AuNPs have shown the ability to reduce bacterial resistance by destroying or disabling resistance pathways

AbstractThe present investigation was conducted to study the leaching characteristics, speciation and fractionation of trace and major elements from fly ash. Five liquid-to-solid ratios (L/S) were selected, ranging from 0.5 to 1. The releasing of trace and major elements from fly ash increased as L/S ratios increased or over time (at pH=2.88). γ-Al(OH)3, Cd3(PO4)2, azurite, jarosite, MnCO3, Pb(OH)2, quartz (SiO2) and ZnCO3 are the solid phases that control Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Si and Zn activities in fly ash leachates. The sequential chemical extraction tests showed that Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Si and Zn were mainly present in the last three fractions, which were Fe–Mn oxides, organics and residual fractions and their leachability could be well-controlled in common natural environment. According to risk assessment code (RAC); Cd, Cu, Mn and Pb show a medium risk, while Zn and Fe shows low risk level, but Al and Si are considered safe to our environment

In the last few years, Gulf Cooperation Council countries (GCC) allocated billions of dollars for expanding and upgrading its airports, therefore many studies and researches were held in order to analyze the crucial impact airports have on the economical development of these countries. This study aims to analyze airports network in GCC countries and reveal the facts hidden beneath it. The author prepared a genuine dataset about GCC airports network and represented it as a graph dataset. Using an open source software called Gephi [1], the author applied data mining techniques on the airports graph with the aid of several graphical metrics like degree centrality, betweenness and closeness centrality, and other types of metrics. The author was able to reveal some interesting facts about the airports in GCC countries. These facts showed that airports like Dubai International airport is considered an important continental hub for aviation, while other airports like Kuwait airport has a limited influence and importance in GCC airports network
