The Myc trilogy: lord of RNA polymerases

    No full text
Cancer cells have a raised cellular metabolism, including increased protein biosynthesis. Three new studies now show that the oncoprotein Myc, known to drive cell division, also enhances ribosomal RNA synthesis by RNA polymerase I in addition to controlling RNA polymerase II- and III-regulated gene transcription. This suggests that Myc promotes the generation of crucial components of a functional ribosome.UPTRUThordur Oskarsson and Andreas Trumpp are at the Swiss Institute for Experimental Cancer Research (ISREC), 1066 Epalinges, Switzerland. Replication Data for "Birth Order and Voter Turnout"

We use individual level data from Norwegian and Swedish registers in this study. The data material is located on encrypted servers to which we have to log in through a remote desktop application in order to perform all of our data analyses. Due to the sensitivity of the data, we are under contractual and ethical obligation not to distribute these data to others. For those researchers who want to replicate our results there are two ways to get access to the administrative data. The first way is to order the data directly from Statistics Sweden and Statistics Norway. Both Statistics Sweden and Statistics Norway presently require that researchers obtain permission from a local Ethical Review Board before data can be ordered (descriptions of how to order data from Statistics Norway and Statistics Sweden are available at: https://www.ssb.no/en/omssb/tjenesterog- verktoy/data-til-forskning and https://www.scb.se/en/services/ guidance-for-researchers-and-universities/). In this dataverse we make available complete lists all of the variables that we ordered from Statistics Norway and Statistics Sweden for this project, together with the statistical code used for the analyses

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Urbana rum. En analys av Majkens vuxenblivande i Martha Sandwall-Bergströms romantrilogi om familjen Oskarsson

‘‘Urban space: An examination of the coming of age of Majken in Martha Sandwall-Bergström’s novel trilogy about the Oskarsson family.’’ In this article I examine the ways in which Martha Sandwall-Bergström uses urban places and milieus to depict the coming of age of the protagonist Majken in Aldrig en lugn stund hos Oskarssons (1952), Allt händer hos Oskarssons (1953) and Majken Stolt, född Oskarsson (1954). With support from Henri Lefebvres concept of social space, I argue that Sandwall-Bergström employs the social spaces of the city to depict Majken’s development. In her search for a new identity Majken moves trough a variety of social spaces, typical for a big city of the 1950’s. My point is that the actual searching takes place in the public spaces of the inner city, on streets, in shopping malls and nightspots. This can be read as a period of development and freedom before Majken has to adjust herself to a more conventional way of life. The trilogy describes a circular movement from one home to another but at the same time also a social journey. Repeatedly Sandwall-Bergström contrasts the overcrowded and dirty working class apartment of Majken’s childhood with the bright and clean spaces of urban modernity. Keywords: Martha Sandwall-Bergström; identity construction; urban space; social space; young adult literature (Published: 11 December 2013) Citation: Barnboken tidskrift för barnlitteraturforskning/Journal of Children’s Literature Research, Vol. 36, 2013 http://dx.doi.org/10.3402/clr.v36i0.2334

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    No full text
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

I'm going to make you rich! : With a little help of Piotroski

Master thesis in Business Administration, Swedish Business School at Örebro University, spring semester 2012 Authors: Anders Oskarsson & Christian Uhlander Title: I’m going to make you rich! -With a little help from Piotroski Research objective: This paper examines whether a simple account-based analysis strategy, F_SCORE, can improve returns earned by an investor. The results show that F_SCORE generated a 69,7 % annual return between 2001-2010 at the Swedish market, which was better than the further developed model A_SCORE. Overall, the evidence suggests that the market does not incorporate historical information into prices in a timely manner. Methodology: The foundation for this thesis is based on a quantitative approach and empirical material is gathered from Thomson Reuters Datastream for the Swedish market
