Variational calculations of structures and energetics in very floppy trimers: A new computational implementation
Fully variational Calculations which employ the Distributed Gaussian Functions (DGF) approach, and an overall potential within each trimer given as a sum of two-body potentials, have been implemented with a new computational scheme and Used to verify the features of bound states in very weakly interacting systems. As test cases, the "half-neon" and the weakly bound bosonic He(3), have been analyzed. The present, very extended expansions are discussed in detail and Our findings are found to compare favorably with the existing results on these systems. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
Hydrodynamics from statistical mechanics: combined dynamical-NEMD and conditional sampling to relax an interface between two immiscible liquids
We present a method to study hydrodynamic phenomena from atomistic simulations. In statistical mechanics, these fields are computed as the ensemble average over the time dependent probability density function corresponding to the time evolution of an initial conditional probability density function consistent with some initial conditions. These initial conditions typically consist in constraints on some macroscopic fields, e.g. the density field. We show how these processes can be studied by combining the dynamical approach to non-equilibrium molecular dynamics with the restrained simulation approach. As an illustration of our method, we study the relaxation to the equilibrium of an interface between two immiscible liquids. We show that, at a variance with the local time average method, the standard atomistic approach used in this field, our method is able to produce (macroscopic) fields satisfying the symmetry conditions of the problem
Combining Rare Events Techniques: Phase Change in Si Nanoparticles
We describe a combined Restrained MD/Parallel Tempering approach to study the difference in free energy as a function of a set of collective variables between two states in presence of metastabilities in the manifold orthogonal to the one spanned by the chosen collective variables. We illustrate the method by an extended study of the relative stability of the amorphous vs crystalline Si nanoparticles embedded in a-SiO2 of size ranging between 0.8 and 1.8 nm as a function of temperature [S. Orlandini, S. Meloni, and L. Colombo in Phys. Rev. B 83:235303, 2011]. The results show that the method permits to get over the hidden metastabilities. Finally, we try to identify the missing collective variables from the Restrained MD/Parallel Tempering trajectories and analyze whether the collective variable used to control the amorphous-to-crystalline transition is adequate to describe the mechanism of crystallization of some of the nanoparticles considered
Order-disorder phae change in embedded Si nanoparticles
We investigated the relative stability of the amorphous versus crystalline nanoparticles of sizes ranging between 0.8 and 1.8 nm. We found that (at variance from bulk systems) at low T, small nanoparticles are amorphous and they undergo an amorphous-to-crystalline phase transition at high T. On the contrary, large nanoparticles recover the bulklike behavior: crystalline at low T and amorphous at high T. We also investigated the structure of crystalline nanoparticles, providing evidence that they are formed by an ordered core surrounded by a disordered periphery. Furthermore, we also provide evidence that the details of the structure of the crystalline core depend on the size of the nanoparticle
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Searching for many-body effects and Efimov states in very weakly bound triatomics: HeNeH− and HeNeH
Abstract: The rotationless, vibrational states of two weakly bound triatomic species are calculated using a variational expansion over multicentred Gaussian functions (the DGF method described in the main text) and corrections are introduced by using the three-body potentials vis a vis the sum-of-potentials approximation. The effects are seen to be very small and isotopic substitution is further introduced to evaluate changes on the vibrational structures of both systems, aiming at possibly detecting Efimov behaviour in such special trimers: no Efimov states are found with the available potentials and when the two-body potential strengths are varied. An additional study on the effects of isotopic substitutions for H atoms is also presented
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
