Including material and photographs not included in most of the 100 other books about the champion, Ishmael Reed's The Complete Muhammad Ali is more than just a biography-it is a fascinating portrait of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st. An honest, balanced portrayal of Ali, the book includes voices that have been omitted from other books. It charts Ali's evolution from Black Nationalism to a universalism, but does not discount the Nation of Islam and Black Nationalism's important influence on his intellectual development. Filipino American author Emil Guillermo speaks about how "The Thrilla' In Manila" brought the Philippines into the 20th century. Fans of Muhammad Ali, boxing fans, and those interested in modern African American history and the Nation of Islam will be fascinated by this biography by an accomplished American author.Intro -- DEDICATION -- INTRODUCTION -- The Curious History of an Icon -- CHAPTER 1 -- CHAPTER 2 -- CHAPTER 3 -- CHAPTER 4 -- CHAPTER 5 -- CHAPTER 6 -- CHAPTER 7 -- Did the Secret Government Fear a U.S. Muslim/Overseas Muslim Alliance? -- CHAPTER 8 -- CHAPTER 9 -- The Break Between the Prophet and his Disciple -- CHAPTER 10 -- CHAPTER 11 -- CHAPTER 12 -- The GOAT (Greatest Of All Time): Ali or Louis? -- CHAPTER 13 -- The Nation of Islam, the Mob, Showdowns in Canada and Sonny Liston -- CHAPTER 14 -- CHAPTER 15 -- The Taunts: Marketing or Racism? -- CHAPTER 16 -- CHAPTER 17 -- CHAPTER 18 -- CHAPTER 19 -- Boxing and the Brain -- CHAPTER 20 -- Ali's Feet -- CHAPTER 21 -- Mr. Dick -- CHAPTER 22 -- CHAPTER 23 -- The Opening Ceremonies, November 2005 -- CHAPTER 24 -- December 2005, Las Vegas -- CHAPTER 25 -- CHAPTER 26 -- June 16, 2004 -- CHAPTER 27 -- CHAPTER 28 -- CHAPTER 29 -- Aix-en-Provence -- CHAPTER 30 -- Ali as a Black Nationalist -- San Francisco, January 2004 Black Liberation Book Fair -- CHAPTER 31 -- January 31, 2004 -- CHAPTER 32 -- October 2005, Chicago -- CHAPTER 33 -- Why Ali remained with Elijah instead of following Malcolm -- CHAPTER 34 -- CHAPTER 35 -- February 4, 2006, Oakland, California -- CHAPTER 36 -- Like Zeus Descending from Mount Olympus -- CHAPTER 37 -- CHAPTER 38 -- Tuesday, February 28, 2006, New York -- CHAPTER 39 -- Bigger Than Boxing -- CHAPTER 40 -- Tribes Gallery, New York, April 2006 -- CHAPTER 41 -- June 2006, Louisville, Kentucky -- CHAPTER 42 -- CHAPTER 43 -- CHAPTER 45 -- Bad Company -- CHAPTER 46 -- Coxson, A Very Charming Rogue -- CHAPTER 47 -- Ali and the largest embezzlement scheme in Wells Fargo history -- CHAPTER 48 -- CHAPTER 49 -- "Lonnie is a stabilizing force."-Harry Belafonte -- October 29, 2006 -- CHAPTER 50 -- Abdul Rahman -- CHAPTER 51 -- CHAPTER 52 -- CHAPTER 53How Will Ali Be Remembered? This study focuses on the lives, ideas and activities of scientists living in the Orhan Gazi Period (1324-1362). Orhan Gazi, who ensured the military, judicial and administrative institutionalization of the Ottoman Empire, also built madrasahs that would contribute to the cultural development of the society. In the Iznik madrasah established in 731 (1330/1131), professors such as Dâvûd-i Kayserî, Taceddin el-Kürdî and Alâeddin Ali Esved gave education. These scientists have been influential in the state administration and social life by educating a large number of students and creating valuable works. Dâvûd-i Kayserî, who was the first professor of the Ottoman Empire, became famous with his commentary on İbnü'l Arabî's work called Füsusu'l-Hikem. After him, Taceddin el-Kürdî and Alaeddin Ali Esved were respectively professors. Alâeddin commented on the Hanafi fiqh called al-Vikaye while he was a professor. During his profession, Alâeddin commented on the work named al-Vikaye related to the Hanafi fiqh. Çandarlı Kara Halil Hayreddin Pasha, another important name of the scientific organization, rose to the position of vizier after serving as a judge in many districts

Syriac-Arabic Glosses of Isho bar Ali. Volume 2

    No full text
These two volumes constitute the second part (nun-taw) of the Syriac-Arabic dictionary of the 10th cent. physician Isho bar Ali (the first half of the dictionary had been published in 1874 by G. Hoffmann). Each Syriac word is defined in Arabic, often with more than one Arabic equivalent; in addition, the author deals not just with individual Syriac words, but in some cases with phrases. Gottheil used 21 manuscripts (from Oxford, London, Paris, Berlin, Leiden, and Rome) for this edition, and he has supplied a thorough critical apparatus; the manuscripts are described in the introduction. While some manuscripts give the Arabic glosses in Syriac characters (i.e. Garshuni), Gottheil has presented them here in Arabic script. These two volumes will be of great interest to Syriac lexicographers and those who study interactions between Syriac and Arabic.Contains an English introduction by Richard J.H. Gotthei

    ON ORHAN BURİAN

Literary researcher, translator and English literature professor Orhan Burian is one of the distinguished intellectuals of the early republican history. He entered Cambridge University in England in 1933 with a government scholarship and graduated from there in 1936. The education he received at this university had a great influence on the shaping of his views on people, the world and literature. After returning to Turkey from England, Burian entered DTCF (Faculty of Languages, History and Geography) as an assistant and became an associate professor and then a professor there at a young age. He worked as a translator in the Translation Office of the Ministry of National Education established by Hasan Ali Yücel and translated many works from English literature into Turkish. Orhan Burian is an intellectual who has endeavored to give a humanist direction to Turkish thought and literature. His articles in this manner were first published in the journals Yücel and Ufuklar. According to him, humanism is the nullification of all dogmatic thoughts that hinder human contemplation and the liberation of the human mind. Since the freed mind will be in a state of constant search and doubt, the life and art coming out of this mind will not be about indisputable ideas and issues that are believed to be resolved; they will be a product, a mirror of the dynamism peculiar to human nature. Orhan Burian perceives humanism as adapting the dynamic mind and rich philosophy of Ancient Greece and Rome to 20th century thought. He sees "humanitas" as a guide, not "divinitas", to literature and the human being who is the subject of literature. He thinks of it as the application of ancient Greek and Roman secularism and humanity to 20th century Turkish thought and literature, which freed the West from the mental domination of the church and led to the Renaissance and skepticism. This article analyzes the articles written by Orhan Burian in Yücel, Ufuklar and some other journals and tries to understand and present his position in the history of Turkish thought and literature. In the conclusion part of the article, a general evaluation was made about Burian's universe of ideas and writing. This general evaluation belongs to the author of the article.</jats:p

Translation is an activity that brings individuals and societies closer to each other and enables communication and dialogues to be established between them. Translation criticism has an important place in translation science in terms of increasing the quality of translations. Orhan Hançerlioğlu is among the important figures of Turkish Literature with his personality, lifestyle and culture as well as his works. In this study, firstly, brief information about Orhan Hançerlioğlu and his work is given, and his work "Ali", which was translated into Georgian, is examined within the framework of Gideon Toury's "Target-Oriented Translation Theory". According to Gideon Toury's theory, translation is done for the target culture. One of the most common problems encountered in theoretical studies is the mutual relationship between the source text and the target text, which is expressed as "equivalence". If the translated text is closer to the norms of the source text in terms of equivalence, it is called an “adequate” translation; if it is close to the norms of the target text, it is called an “acceptable” translation. In the study, it will be discussed how the work named "Ali / ალი" was transferred to the Georgian language and it will be determined whether the translation is "adequate" or "acceptable" according to Gideon Toury's Target-Oriented Translation Theory. In the study, it is aimed to evaluate how the work, whose original language is Turkish, was transferred to the Georgian language, to assess these transfer forms, and to reveal to what extent the translator could handle the translation by blending it with his creativity. Considering the aforementioned work is a literary work, the fact that the content and form are a whole in the translation of literary texts and the semantic equivalence of the texts are taken into consideration
