Personalized Code Readability Assessment: Are We There Yet?
Unreadable code could be a breeding ground for errors. Thus, previous work defined approaches based on machine learning to automatically assess code readability that can warn developers when some code artifacts (e.g., classes) become unreadable. Given datasets of code snippets manually evaluated by several developers in terms of their perceived readability, such approaches (i) establish a snippet-level ground truth, and (ii) train a binary (readable/unreadable) or a ternary (readable/neutral/unreadable) code readability classifier. Given this procedure, all existing approaches neglect the subjectiveness of code readability, i.e., the possible different developer-specific nuances in the code readability perception. In this paper, we aim to understand to what extent it is possible to assess code readability as subjectively perceived by developers through a personalized code readability assessment approach. This problem is significantly more challenging than the snippet-level classification problem: We assume that, in a realistic scenario, a given developer is keen to provide only a few code readability evaluations, thus less data is available. For this reason, we adopt an LLM with few-shot learning to achieve our goal. Our results, however, show that such an approach achieves worse results than a state-of-the-art feature-based model that is trained to work at the snippet-level. We tried to understand why this happens by looking more closely at the quality of the available code readability datasets and assessed the consistency of the interdeveloper evaluations. We observed that up to a third of the evaluations are self-contradictory. Our negative results call for new and more reliable code readability datasets
THERIO.IT: un nuovo sito per le segnalazioni dei mammiferi in Italia.
La crescente domanda di informazioni sullo stato di conservazione delle specie nel nostro pianeta ha portato negli ultimi anni alla nascita di diverse iniziative mirate alla’archiviazione e fruizione di dati sulla distribuzione delle specie. Uno degli sforzi principali è rappresentato dal progetto GBIF – Global Biodiversity Information Facility, che raccoglie dati sulla biodiversità messi a disposizione da enti e istituzioni pubbliche, in particolare musei di storia naturale. A queste si affiancano iniziative mirate a raccogliere segnalazioni relative a taxa specifici e/o particolari aree geografiche. Tra queste ornitho.it, promossa e finanziata dalla LIPU, che ha ispirato la realizzazione di therio.it http://www.distat.unimol.it/therio/ mirato a raccogliere le segnalazioni dei mammiferi in Italia sotto l’egida dell’Associazione Teriologica Italiana, che garantisce la correttezza e l’uso dei dati nel rispetto dei diritti di proprietà dei singoli contributori. A differenza di ornitho.it, therio.it ha adottato uno standard internazionale di archiviazione e a differenza di GBIF prevede la validazione delle segnalazioni prima dell’inserimento nell’archivio.
Therio.it è un’applicazione web-based che permette di inserire, ricercare e visionare i dati nell’archivio previa registrazione da qualsiasi tipo di dispositivo dotato di un browser web e javascript abilitato. La struttura dell’archivio si rifà allo standard Darwin core, che prevede un insieme di campi relativi all’inquadramento sistematico del taxon, alla localizzazione geografica e alla tipologia della segnalazione.
Il sistema prevede le seguenti figure: visitatore, utente registrato, amministratore. Il processo di validazione prevede il coinvolgimento di esperti dei diversi taxa. Dopo l’attuale fase di test e la definizione di un regolamento per l’uso e la proprietà dei dati, si prevede di estendere il sistema con la possibilità di inserire media (immagini, video, etc), elaborare grafici riassuntivi e modelli previsionali, estendere le possibilità di interazione con gli utenti (chat e forum), creare app ad hoc per iphone, ipad, dispositivi android
Improving Comprehensibility of Source Code via Traceability Information: a Controlled Experiment
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Dynamic simulation driven design and management of production facilities in agricultural/food industry
An industrial plant in the agro-food sector can be considered a complex system as it is composed of numerous types of machines and it is characterized by a strong variation (seasonality) in the agricultural production. Whenever the dynamic behavior of the plants during operation is considered, system and design complexities increase. Reliable operation of food processing farms is primarily dependent on perfect balance between variable supply and product storage at each given time. To date, the classical modus operandi of food processing management systems is carried out under stationary and average conditions. Moreover, most of the systems installed for agricultural and food industries are sized using average production data. This often results in a mismatch between the actual operation and the expected operation. Consequently, the system is not optimized for the needs of a specific company. Also, the system is not flexible to the evolution that the production process could possibly have in the future. Promising techniques useful to solve the above-described problems could possibly be borrowed from demand side management (DSM) in smart grid systems. Such techniques allow customers to make dynamically informed decisions regarding their energy demand and help the energy providers in reducing the peak load demand and reshape the load profile. DSM is successfully used to improve the energy management system and we conjecture that DSM could be suitably adapted to food processing management. In this paper we describe how DSM could be exploited in the intelligent management of production facilities serving agricultural and food industry. The main objective is, indeed, to present how methods for modelling and implementing the dynamic simulation used for the optimization of the energy management in smart grid systems can be applied to a fruit and vegetables processing plant through a suitable adaptation
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
