The Malvasia Bianca Lunga , well known in Italy as Malvasia del Chianti from the name of the zone were it was mainly grown in the past, is also called Malvasia Bianca Pugliese and Malvasia Trevigiana: these names indicate the wide extension of its cultivation along the Italian Adriatic coasts. This grapevine variety is very vigorous and productive, gives a fine quality wines which have a light aroma and are able to improve the flavor and the body of wines based on Trebbiano. In the name of the clonal selection of Abruzzo grapevine varieties, a clone of Malvasia Bianca lunga has been selected and was registred in the National Grapevine Variety Catalogue in the 2002. In the order to collect more information about this clone, a three-year trial was carried out on vines grafted onto two rootstocks (157-11 and 779P) and grown in two areas of the Abruzzo region: Chieti and Aquila. The main morphological characters of this clone resulted those typical of the variety; some differences concerned the colour nuance of the atypical shoot and the leaf nervatures, the cluster structure and the cluster shape. The Malvasia Bianca lunga clone from Abruzzo showed a good equilibrium between vegetative and reproductive parameters. The vigor was not excessive; moreover, in the less fertile soil, the 779 P rootstock reduced the vegetative growth. The yeald was moderate, because of a medium bud fertility and a medium berry set level which, in turn, may be a cause of bunch looseness. The cluster looseness is useful to improve bunch rot resistance. In the more fertile soil, a yeald increment was noticed, mainly due to increment of bud fertility. Berry weight did not achieved 2 grams, features which is positive for the enological purpose. The berry technological parameters were quite equilibrated as well as those of the wines, which were characterized by a good phenol content and by the appreciable bouquet. No sensorial differences were found between the two growing areas. The results confirm and strengthen the interest Malvasia Bianca lunga clone found in Abruzzo, and suggest to increase its diffusion, since the cultivar is admitted in many Italian d.o.c. wine regulations

Preliminary evaluation of variations in composition induced by esca on cv. Trebbiano d’Abruzzo grapes and wines

The present study examined the effect on quality caused by esca in both grape clusters and wines. In the last year (2000) of an eight-year survey of esca foliar symptoms, the vines of two cv. Trebbiano d’Abruzzo vineyards fell at the moment of grape clusters sampling, into 3 groups: 1. vines with esca symptoms; 2. vines that happened to be asymptomatic but that were known to be diseased because they had show leaf symptoms in at least one other survey year and 3. healthy vines. In a third vineyard, in the same growing area, grape clusters were sampled from vines with trunk renewal that had been restored and from unrenewed vines that had never shown esca leaf symptoms and were consequently presumed to be healthy. Preliminary results on grape clusters in the first two vineyards showed differences in composition between symptomatic vines on the one hand, and asymptomatic/diseased vines and healthy vines on the other, with symptomatic vines having lower levels of reducing sugars and a higher nitrogen concentration. As a result the alcohol content of wines from symptomatic vines was about 1% v:v lower than that of wines from the other two groups of vines. Grape clusters and wines from diseased/asymptomatic vines and healthy vines did not differ in the compositional parameters used in the test except for total polyphenols which gave contrasting data among the first two vineyards. In grape clusters and wines from the third vineyard the preliminary results likewise revealed no difference between vines with trunk renewal and unrenewed healthy vines. This finding would seem to corroborate the practice of trunk renewal as a means of restoring both vines and the quality of grape clusters. Research is continuing to evaluate the reliability of these results

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
