The morphology of the Mangala Fossa graben forming the source of the Mangala Valles implies that two episodes of graben subsidence took place, each induced by lateral dike intrusion from Arsia Mons. Quantitative modeling suggests that graben boundary faults breaching the cryosphere provided pathways for water release from an underlying aquifer at a peak rate of ∼107 m3 s−1. In the first event, the graben subsided by ∼200 m, and water carrying a thin ice layer filled the graben, overflowing after ∼2.5 hours, mainly at a low point on the north rim. This captured the water flux, eroding a gap in the north wall which, with an erosion rate of ∼100 μm s−1 and a duration of ∼1 month, was ∼250 m deep by the end of water release. Erosion of the graben floor also took place, at ∼20 μm s−1, lowering it by ∼50 m. Subsequently, heat from the cooling dike melted cryosphere ice, causing a further ∼150 m of subsidence on compaction. In the second event, with a similar duration and peak discharge, the graben again subsided by ∼200 m and filled with ice‐covered water until overflow through the gap began at a water depth of ∼350 m. The gap was eroded down by a further ∼400 m, and the floor was eroded by a further ∼50 m. Finally, heat from the second dike sublimed cryosphere ice, lowering the floor by ∼100 m. In places, combined erosion and subsidence of the graben floor exposed ∼200 m of the first dike

The aim is to analyze how Mekas?s work contributes to an understanding of the diary as a narrative form, and how the author constructs his process of self-representation by means of the diaries. This work seeks to establish a definition for the diary, by means of theoretical references related to the spheres of literature (Braud, 2006; Simonet-Tenant, 2004; Girard, 1986; Lejeune, 2015; Blanchot, 2005) and of audiovisual work (James, 2013; Renov, 1996). As object of study, we analyze the book I had nowhere to go (1991), the diary-films Lost Lost Lost (1976), Walden ? Diaries, Sketches & Notes (1969), Reminiscences of a Journey to Lithuania (1972), and video diaries from the 365 Day Project (2007). This thesis takes weavings (Daney, 2007; Benjamin, 1994) and rends (Daney, 2007; Didi-Huberman, 2014, 2015) as its methodology, grounding itself on the way in which Mekas elaborates his narrative choices and his historical condition. We conclude that Mekas?s work points to an understanding of the diary not solely as literary genre, but as a narrative that affirms itself in a plurality of forms, following the shifts done by the author in his relation to time, space, and the use of different technical devices. We also conclude that Mekas, in his diaries, builds an intrinsic relation between narrating the lived and living the narrated, which reveals how the diaries not only document a certain socio-historical context, but are also themselves part of that context and of the subjectivity built by their author. Como objetos de estudo, s?o analisados o livro I had nowhere to go (1991), os filmes-di?rio Lost Lost Lost (1976), Walden ?

    Jules Valles: Counter-Ideologist

The force of Jules Valles' trilogy, Jacques Vingtras (L'Enfant, Le Bachelier, L'Insurge), lies not so much in the events recounted but rather in the structure that informs the work and fuses the numerous individual narratives into an effective counter-ideological weapon. This inner structure is the author's creation of a dialectic through which he systematically attacks the principal hegemonic agencies of the society of his childhood, youth and adulthood: family, school, community and the work place. This dialectic operates on many levels, including the organization of the sequences and chapters, the narrative techniques employed and the subversion of language through irony. The dialectic does not remain constant throughout the trilogy. The self-constituted arena of internal contradictions in L'Enfant and in Le Bachelier gives way, in L'Insurge, to a rather different strategy, one that forces the reader outside of the closed space of the text, referring him to historical events and to the journalistic writings of the author whose quasi-identity with the narrator becomes more apparent.Jacques Vingtras, the protagonist of the trilogy, is not Valles but his life is closely patterned on that of his creator. Vingtras consistently views his past, present and future in terms of a struggle against those forces which impede his union with the "people." This union can be achieved and maintained only through negation. Through the text, Valles seeks not only to expose and valorize his own personal experiences, but also to attach the narratives to the real world that exists outside of them.Valles' counter-ideological strategies, therefore, are employed within a broader framework. This framework can be perceived by examining Valles' text as a "symbolic act," following Fredric Jameson's terminology in The Political Unconscious. The ways in which Valles' texts negate ideology are fused with and are dependent upon the conscious and unconscious purposes served by the texts. Consequently, this study is divided into two sections: Section One is limited primarily to theoretical presentations and textual analyses that seek to grasp the counter-ideological dialectic that operates and evolves in the trilogy; Section Two examines how the author seeks to resolve certain social contradictions through his fictional creation.Made available in DSpace on 2014-12-16T05:11:28Z (GMT).

    No full text

    No full text
This paper gives an overview of qualitative sociological research undertaken in Spain in the last two or three decades. It does not aim to be an exhaustive inventory but rather a sample that is "strategic", "theoretical" (Glaser and Strauss, 1967) and "structural" (Ibáñez, 1979). We therefore make use of widely accepted concepts in an area of methodological research which we share in part with other colleagues (Castillo et al., 2009; Valles et al., 2011; Canales, 2013; Valles, 2015), such as backstage and archive. The main results are, on the one hand, new historical-biographical background material within the process (and contextual-conceptual context) of generational change; and, on the other hand, new initiatives that are taking place to raise awareness of pioneering archival practices in Spanish qualitative sociological research. The strategic sample of theoreticians and practitioners of qualitative methodology focuses on defining examples of each, to address and develop the conceptual aspect of both backstage and archive. In the first case, the initiative to pay homage to a teacher by his followers has served to explore and offer a qualitative look at intergenerational background. In the second case, the initiative to donate a research archive at the end of a working life connects with the new contexts of teaching and research in the digital age, and advocates methodological reflection-action. The legacy of the older generation allows us to glimpse and better understand the contribution of those who are continuing their work

Erosion rate and previous extent of interior layered deposits on Mars revealed by obstructed landslides

    No full text
We describe interior layered deposits on Mars that have obstructed landslides before undergoing retreat by as much as 2 km. These landslides differ from typical Martian examples in that their toe height increases by as much as 500 m in a distinctive frontal scarp that mimics the shape of the layered deposits. By using crater statistics to constrain the formation ages of the individual landslides to between ca. 200 and 400 Ma, we conclude that the retreat of the interior layered deposits was rapid, requiring erosion rates of between 1200 and 2300 nm yr–1. We suggest that the interior layered deposits are either extremely friable, if eroded strictly by wind, or composed of a material whose degradation has been enhanced by ice sublimation. These erosion rates also confirm that the interior layered deposits have been in a state of net degradation over the past 400 m.y., suggesting that the process that caused net deposition in the past has ceased or slowed substantially on Mars relative to erosion. Our results imply that interior layered deposits with a similar morphology across Mars, including the mound in Gale Crater, have probably undergone similar rapid erosion and retreat, suggesting that their total modern volume underrepresents the depositional record and thus sedimentary history of Mars
