Ingrid Ylva och tornet i Bjälbo
The article discusses the background to the erection of the huge church tower in Bjälbo, Östergötland, Sweden. It also focuses on medieval women as founders of churches. The author maintains that new dendrochronological dating of the tower could mean that founder of this building piece was not one of the male members of the important Bjälbo dynasty, but Ingrid Ylva the mother of Birger Jarl
The Black Lives Matter movement : understanding the impact on race and racial injustice in Norway following the 2020 protest wave
The Black Lives Matter movement rose as a force against the oppression and systematic violence of black people in the US but spread to become a worldwide movement with local adaptations. While it had existed for some years
before 2020, the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 26 sparked a renewed anger and frustration among people around the world. Norway experienced a protest wave in the summer of 2020, which attracted and engaged youth of minority background, in particular, to participate.
This study aims to investigate the extent to which the Black Lives Matter protest wave has had an impact on the current discussion about race and racial injustice in Norway by examining the role of minority youth in Norwegian society. The objective of the study is to deepen the understanding of racialized experiences by lifting the voices of people who have experienced racism or racial injustice, as well as to demonstrate whether the Black Lives Matter protest wave has had any value on the ongoing conversation about racism in Norway. Thus, the main research question that this study has attempted to answer is: How has the Black Lives Matter movement in Norway made an impact on the conversation around race and racial injustice in Norway?
Our study suggests that the BLM protest wave has had a significant impact on the conversation around race and racial injustice in Norway, particularly by how it introduced a wider understanding and nuances to the comprehension of racialized experienced, as well as it increased the overall knowledge among the general population of what it is like to be a minority in Norway. It has had a noteworthy impact on minority youth’s role in Norwegian society because they experienced having more space in the public room to share their experiences and perspectives, and a reduced fear of voicing their opinions. Lastly, our study demonstrates that there is a considerable lack of trust among minority youth towards the police, primarily because they feel targeted and unfairly treated by law enforcement, based on first or secondary negative experiences with the police

Religion and Politics in the United States - A Constructivist Understanding of Personal Perceptions and Public Discourse
The topic of religion in secular nations has been overlooked within the field of International Relations. The United States is a secular country with prominent religious features and symbolism, present in the Pledge of Allegiance, printed on every monetary bill, and demonstrated when presidents take the oath of office with their hand on a bible. Religion is deeply ingrained in the nation, yet its political significance has been understated both at grassroot and broader institutional levels. This thesis aims to explore the relationship between religion and politics in the U.S. through a constructivist lens, focusing on how meaning is socially constructed through discourse, norms, and identities. The analysis is centered on the examination of individual perceptions obtained through semi-structured interviews with fourteen citizens in Vermont and Ohio, complemented by a comparative analysis of four news articles. The findings suggest that personal sentiments and media narratives contribute to influencing how religion is understood in political contexts. Ultimately, this thesis argues that religion plays a constitutive role in American political identity and can be reflected in political decision-making at the national level, as well as within the global political landscape
Glacier growing : a local response to water scarcity in Baltistan and Gilgit, Pakistan
Forfatterens navn på omslaget: Ingvar Nørstegård TveitenPeople in the districts of Baltistan and Gilgit practice ’glacier growing’ with the intention of making glaciers that will enhance water availability. This is done by carrying glacier ice from a naturally occurring glacier up to elevations over 4000 m a.s.l., where it is placed in a dug out cave in a scree-slope. Apart from the ice, gourds containing water are also added to interior of the cave. Then a layer of charcoal, and sawdust or wheat husks is put on top of the ice. The workers close off the cave by piling up rocks to cover the entrance. Connected to this practice is an elaborate system of knowledge that is handed down orally from generation to generation by means of stories and myths. This study is an exploration of the practice of glacier growing and of its implications for local perceptions on water management. Former studies on water management in the Northern Areas of Pakistan have been concentrated on the sophisticated system of irrigation canals which have been in use since ancient times.
Glacier growing is directed at increasing the water supply to these canals at times of the year when people experience water to be scarce.M-MNRS
A study on Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate change, current policies and institutional set up for dealing with it
This thesis consist of seven chapters. Chapter one consists of purpose of the study, research questions and theoretical framework or background for the empirical findings in the following chapters. Chapter two provides insight into methodology, research design, data collection methods and the reasons for the choices. The third chapter introduce the study area and gives an overview of the vulnerability of the country to climate change with the help of several studies. Fourth chapter gives description about the Institutional and policy framework for climate change at governmental and provincial level and includes key findings about the gaps or challenges based on the theoretical framework presented in the chapter one. Fifth chapter first involves a brief description of the Institutional framework for Disaster risk management at governmental and provincial level and a critical review on Pakistan national disaster management act 2010. Sixth chapter presents climate budgeting at governmental and provincial level followed by seventh chapter which presents and discusses the organizations working on climatic data collection and research and their challenges. Eight chapter highlights the role of academia. Ultimately, conclusion and some recommendations are made in the end of the thesis.M-IE

Global climate change is causing more extreme droughts, as well as subtler chronic changes in precipitation patterns. Both chronic and extreme precipitation change can alter ecosystem structure and function, and these alterations may affect how systems respond to future extreme climatic events. Understanding how legacies of various past precipitation changes may alter the effects of future extreme droughts will be important for predicting ecosystem responses to climate change. We investigated how ecological legacies of experimentally-imposed chronic and extreme precipitation changes altered the impact of an extreme drought on an economically-important grassland ecosystem.Top Scholars for University-Wide Graduate Programs
Norway's search for status through the deployment of police officers to international operations
This thesis studies Norway’s contributions of police officers to South Sudan as part of the United Nations Mission In South Sudan (UNMISS), and to Afghanistan as part of the Norwegian Police Support to Afghan Authorities Project (NORAF), and what the rationale for Norway is for participating in international operations with police officers. My problem statement is to what degree can Norway’s participation with police officers in international operations be explained as an action to seek status. This is studied through evaluating Norway’s actions as an attempt to be perceived as either a moral authority or a reliable partner by looking at Norway’s goals and commitments, Norway’s contribution to UNMISS and NORAF, and exploring what Norway has gained through these contributions. Studying this problem statement has been approached through a qualitative approach using 12 qualitative interviews, participation observations and document analysis. My findings show that status seeking is an important part of Norway’s participation with police officers in international operations. When comparing NORAF and UNMISS, the goal to maintain Norway’s status concerning its bilateral and multilateral relations has been reached, while Norway has been less successful with reaching its goals concerned with development assistance. In addition, Norway has prioritized to be perceived as a reliable partner rather than, and often at the expense of, being perceived as a moral authority. This means that Norway’s contribution of police officers to international operations – originally meant as a tool of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for development assistance – is also used for seeking international status.M-I
