Semantic navigation meshes for complex outdoor terrains
Traditional navigation meshes are typically based on splitting the terrain into connected convex regions representing walkable cells. This works well for almost flat terrains where obstacles are clearly defined by walls or holes. When applied to complex outdoor environments with many changes in terrain height and slope, traditional approaches fail to correctly identify the walkable areas. Current navigation meshes require the user to specify the character's maximum step size and slope, and then classify the environment as walkable or non-walkable, thus limiting the flexibility to adjust paths to the agents' characteristics. Even if some terrain properties are then computed to add semantics to the navigation mesh, many cells could cover a wide range of values, as this information was ignored during its generation. In this paper, we present a novel approach to generate semantic navigation meshes, where the generated cells have a coherent and low-variance range of values for the chosen semantics (e.g., slope). Cell generation is performed with a semantic partitioning based on a region-growing algorithm. Our navigation mesh allows us to preserve the full complexity of the terrain without forcing a binary decision between walkable and non-walkable and provides useful semantics for the pathfinding algorithm.Spanish Computer Graphics Conference (CEIG)Short Paper

October 2017-February 2018 Author: Doris Bastidas Rocha. Advisor: MSc. Tamara Argudo B. ABSTRACT This systematization is evidence of the process experienced during the pre-professional internship as a Social Work intern at the ‘Unidad Educativa San Vicente’ in San Vicente de Pusir Parish from October 2017 to February 2018. The research was carried out within the comprehensive education framework to know the current local scenario of adolescent pregnancy in the educational, social, and family context, affecting young people’s normal development in their relationships and the limitations generated after pregnancy teen. The study methodology presents a qualitative quantitative approach, which developed a theoretical review that substantively based the intervention on the events carried out in the Parish. A survey was applied to the Unidad Educativa San Vicente Educational Unit’s students, to carry out the thematic analysis the San Vicente de Pusir Parish GAD helped. The results showed that about 46% of the students are unaware of sexual education, so it is evident that teenage pregnancies are due to ignorance of the subject and its educational and social importance. It was concluded that greater cooperation and coordination should be encouraged between the existing educational units in the San Vicente de Pusir Parish, the local GAD, and society to promote adequate sexual education and better communication with adolescents in preventing pregnancy at this stage of their life, based on a human right, gender, intercultural and inclusive approach
Generation and Evaluation of Truss Structures for the Strut-and-Tie Model: Based on Topology Optimization Results for Deep Concrete Beams
The Strut-and-Tie model (STM) is an efficient technique for the design of concrete structures, but the creation of suitable truss structures gets complicated when these structures become more complex. The topology optimization (TO) is a convenient technique that has been used in recent years for the creation of trusses of complex structures for the STM. This thesis presents a process for the creation of suitable truss structures for the STM using the results obtained with the TO, as well as, an evaluation of them to see which is the most optimal truss structure according to the total amount of tension force present on the full truss, this total amount of tension force is the selected evaluation criterion. Three deep concrete beams were analyzed using two topology optimization (SIMP and BESO approaches) for the generation of stress paths, these approaches are based on the minimization of the strain energy. The procedure starts with the computation of the principal stresses over the results of the topology optimization, then bar elements are placed over the stress paths of these diagrams creating a first (harsh) layout of the trusses. These trusses were not always found stable, but all the trusses were stabilized because, in this way, it is easy to calculate the axial force of in the truss elements, thus satisfy a basic requirement of the STM. To stabilize the truss structures two methods were explored. (i) The addition of new members outside of the stress paths (stabilizers), the essential characteristic of these new elements is that the axial force in them should be zero to not change the stress distribution found during the optimization process. A sensitivity analysis of the stabilizers was performed to track how the axial force changes in these members depending on the position of the nodes connected to them, this process was necessary because when an element outside the stress paths has axial force the stress diagrams have been changed. (ii) The creation of substructures within the stress paths, this process stabilizes the global structure without the addition of members outside the stress paths. Finally, a structural analysis was performed to obtain the axial forces in each member of the truss structure, and through an analysis of these results, the total amount of tension forces in the truss was computed. The truss with the minimum value of total tension force is assumed as the most optimal structure for each case. It is clear through the analysis that the variation of the input parameters does not cause large variations in the results of the topology optimization, but it has an impact in the stabilization process and the performance of the structures according to the evaluation criterion. Furthermore, it has been proved that suitable trusses for the STM can be created using any of the two selected optimization approaches obtaining good results, and a similar performance according to the evaluation criterion.Civil Engineerin
Defining High-Risk Patients Suitable for Incisional Hernia Prevention
Incisional hernia prevention; Laparotomy complications; Prophylactic meshPrevención de hernia incisional; Complicaciones de la laparotomía; Malla profilácticaPrevenció de l'hèrnia incisional; Complicacions de la laparotomia; Malla profilàcticaThere is a 9%–20% incisional hernia (IH) rate 1 year after midline laparotomy (1, 2) increasing up to 22.4% after 3 years of follow-up (3). Several prospective studies (4–7), metanalyses (8, 9) and guidelines (10) advise or have demonstrated that the use of prophylactic mesh (PM) reduces IH. Despite all these studies, the use of PM has not been spread worldwide (11). Among other reasons, this is because it is unknown for which patients the potential benefits outweigh the risks of complications when using a PM. Likewise, there are several concerns among surgeons regarding which complications can occur using a PM (remarkably chronic pain and infection) (12). Due to these, it is necessary to determine diseases, patients and situations where high risks of IH justify consideration of using a PM.
This paper aims to review as an opinion article the scientific data on situations, patients and diseases with a higher risk of IH in which PM should be considered
LA MULTIFUNCIONALIDAD DE LAS INSTITUCIONES JURÍDICAS ASOCIATIVAS AGRARIAS EN LAS POLÍTICAS DE DESARROLLO RURAL Y REGIONAL/THE MULTIFUNCTIONALITY OF THE JURIDICAL ASSOCIATIVE AGRARIAN INSTITUTIONS IN POLITICS FOR RURAL AND REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT
In this paper, the author seeks to locate the role of agricultural cooperatives as an instrument for implementing rural development, understood as one of the two pillars of current European CAP. Cooperatives are a type of business organisation widespread in rural areas that has proved to be specially suited to promoting any kind of economic activity, avoiding depopulation and enhancing social cohesion in those areas. Cooperatives are versatile legal entities that may easily adapt to the requirements of new rural development policies. In that respect, cooperatives supply an already existing business network from which newly launched initiatives would benefit, making possible the development of supplementary economic activities that would represent additional sources of income and jobs. In this context, the author discusses the legal devices designed to promote economic cooperation in the field of Spanish legislation on cooperatives. Special attention is given to those statutory attributes which allow cooperatives to go beyond the economic integration of their members, and explore new patterns of economic cooperation with other rural actors. Finally, the author suggests some ways of promoting private-public partnership

Desertscape Simulation
International audienceWe present an interactive aeolian simulation to author hot desert scenery. Wind is an important erosion agent in deserts which, despite its importance, has been neglected in computer graphics. Our framework overcomes this and allows generating a variety of sand dunes, including barchans, longitudinal and anchored dunes, and simulates abrasion which erodes bedrock and sculpts complex landforms. Given an input time varying high altitude wind field, we compute the wind field at the surface of the terrain according to the relief, and simulate the transport of sand blown by the wind. The user can interactively model complex desert landscapes, and control their evolution throughout time either by using a varietyof interactive brushes or by prescribing events along a user-defined time-line
Monitoring a case study of the level of English and the degree of awareness of the group of high academic performance
During the academic year 2010/2011, the Department of Education of the Valencian Government promoted an academic teaching program focus on the use of English as a medium of instruction for outstanding students. This program was articulated through the creation of High Academic Performance groups (‘Alto Rendimiento Académico’, ARA groups) in most of the Valencian Public Universities. The objective of this work was to assess the degree of awareness regarding the existence/way to work of the ARA groups of both teachers and students belonging to different degrees of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Alicante, in which there is an ARA group in the degree of Biology. Furthermore, they were aimed to be aware of the different English levels between the degrees surveyed and if there are differences over the years, besides others aspects as the advantages of belonging to ARA groups, among others. Our results indicate that the level of English of the students has increased with respect to the last year in all groups and the ARA group still has the highest level. Finally, the degree of awareness has not changed almost anything, so improving the visibility and dissemination of ARA groups is still necessary. These types of monitoring studies are necessary and prior step to define strategies to increase the awareness and promotion of ARA groups
