    An Improved Train Classification Procedure for the Hump Yard Lausanne Triage

    In this paper we combine an integer programming approach and a computer simulation tool to successfully develop and verify an improved classification schedule for a real-world train classification instance. First, we derive an integer program for computing train classification schedules based on an earlier developed bitstring representation of such schedules. We show how to incorporate various practical restrictions in this model. Secondly, we apply the model to one day of traffic data of the Swiss classification yard Lausanne Triage. We incorporate all the operational and infrastructural restrictions of this yard instance in our integer program. Even with this high number of restrictions, we are able to compute a schedule that saves a full sorting step and one track compared to the currently applied procedure. We finally show this improved schedule is applicable in practice by a thorough computer simulation

    In this paper we establish a consistent encoding of freight train classification methods. This encoding scheme presents a powerful tool for efficient presentation and analysis of classification methods, which we successfully apply to illustrate the most relevant historic results from a more theoretical point of view. We analyze their performance precisely and develop new classification methods making use of the inherent optimality condition of the encoding. We conclude with deriving optimal algorithms and complexity results for restricted real-world settings

    This draft is the first attempt to establish a UK MARC specifically for Archives and Manuscripts Control since the British Library indicated that it would countenance such extensions to the national UK MARC format. In order to keep consistency with the general UK MARC format, standard UK MARC subject fields are not included in this document, since they should be taken from the latest version of the UK MARC manual. {A note of them should perhaps be included in UK MARC AMC.} {NB Text in braces is intended to be explanatory material for readers of this draft}. Certain other fields have not been included that might occasionally be used in the cataloguing of archival materials but would generally only be used for such materials in organizations which were combining archive databases with library databases. This MARC version is intended for use with descriptions of archive or anuscript material that follow, or fit, the traditional style of cataloguing: we assume that these will normally relate to paper or parchment originals. It is not intended for use with descriptions of other kinds of material. For these, fields may be drawn from the appropriate UK MARC document. MARC versions for use with archives in special formats should be developed, in order to complete the full range of facilities available to archivists and curators

    Optimizing the cargo express service of Swiss Federal Railways

    The Cargo Express service of Swiss Federal Railways (SBB Cargo) offers fast overnight transportation of goods between selected train stations in Switzerland and is currently operated as a two-hub and spoke system. We present three different models for planning the operation of this service as a whole. All models capture the underlying optimization problem with a high level of detail: Traffic routing, train routing, make-up, scheduling, and locomotive assignment are all addressed. At the same time we respect hard constraints like tight service time windows, and train and yard capacities. To the best of our knowledge, such an integration of planning steps into one exact approach has not been successfully attempted before. We describe our approaches for obtaining provably good quality solutions. Our algorithmic techniques involve branch-and-cut, branch-andprice as well as problem specific exact and heuristic acceleration methods. We conclude our study with computational results on realistic data
