From Albania to Brazil: Ismail Kadaré's Broken april and its filmic adaptation, Walter Salles' Abril despedaçado
Get PDFDissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras/Inglês e Literatura Correspondente, Florianópolis, 2007The aim of the present study is to analyse how issues of Albanian national identity are portrayed in Ismail Kadaré's novel Broken April (Prilli i Thyer), and how such features have been appropriated and translated onto the screen into a Northeastern Brazilian context. I depart from the premise that, even though Brazilian elements are indeed shown in the film, the non existence of the Kanun in Brazil, and the use of narrative techniques different from the ones employed in the novel render the story of the blood feuds in the film more universal than the genuinely Albanian reality depicted in the novel. In sum, the appropriation transcends the Albanian reality into a universal context, showing, at the same time, elements which are typical of the Brazilian culture.O objetivo do presente estudo é analisar como questões sobre a identidade nacional Albanesa são retratadas no romance Abril Despedaçado (Prilli i Thyer), de Ismail Kadaré, e como tais questões foram apropriadas e traduzidas para a tela num contexto Nordestino-Brasileiro. O estudo parte do princípio que, embora elementos tipicamente Brasileiros sejam mostrados no filme, a não existência do Kanun no Brasil, e o uso de técnicas narrativas diferentes das empregadas no romance ajudam a deixar a história das brigas de família no filme com um aspecto mais universal do que a realidade genuinamente Albanesa representada na romance. Em suma, a apropriação transcende a realidade Albanesa para um contexto mais universal, sem deixar de mostrar também elementos típicos da cultura Brasileira

Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskripsi analisis yang bertujuan untuk mengetahui dan menganalisis dimensi waktu pada novel Demi Masa karya Musa Ismail. Pendekatan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode deskriptif. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan konsep waktu dan penjabaran waktu oleh tokoh-tokoh pada novel Demi Masa karya Musa Ismail. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa bentuk konsep waktu paling dominan dalam mempengaruhi keseharian tokoh-tokoh dalam Novel Demi Masa Karya Musa Ismail. Peristiwa berupa kata dan kalimat dari tokoh dalam Novel Demi Masa Karya Musa Ismail yang mengandung konsep waktu. Ditemukan bahwa pada konsep waktu tokoh lebih banyak membahas dan mengingat waktu zahir (alam dunia) yang dimana sebagian dari tokoh memanfaatkan waktu zahir sebagai kesempatan untuk memperbanyak kegiatan beribadah dan beramal kepada tuhan dan sebagiannya memanfaatkan waktu zahir sebagai kesempatan untuk memuaskan diri di duni
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Cyprus Turkish folk culture in İsmail Bozkurt’s novel Kaza

İlk romanı Yusufçuklar Oldumu? 1987’de yayımlanan Bozkurt, bu ilk romanından beşinci romanı Kaza’ya (2016) kadar tüm romanlarındaKıbrıs Türk tarihine, halk kültürüne, gündelik yaşam pratiklerine ve Kıbrıs Türk halkının güncel sorunlarına yer vermiştir. Bu açıdan İsmail Bozkurt’un romanları halk bilimi/halk edebiyatı incelemeleri açısından oldukça zengin bir malzemeye sahiptir. Onun romanlarında halk inanış ve uygulamaları, mutfak kültürü, özel günlerde gerçekleştirilen âdetler, mitolojik unsurlar ve efsaneler, ağız özellikleri belirgin bir şekilde görülmektedir. Bozkurt’un makalemizde inceleyeceğimiz Kazaromanında da bu özelliklerden halk bilimi bağlamında mitolojik unsular ve efsaneler, mutfak kültürü ve Kıbrıs ağzı karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Makalemizde romanda yer alan Kıbrıs Türk halk kültürüne ait unsurların neler olduğu tespit edilecek ve yazarın bunlara eserinde yer verme amacı il e bu unsurların üstlendiği işlevler romanın kurgusal özellikleri bağlamında irdelenecektir.İsmail Bozkurt, born in 1940, is one of the few living novelists of Cyprus Turkish literature. His first novel Yusufçuklar oldu mu? was published in 1987. Following that, all of his novels including Kaza (2016) have beenabout the history, folk culture, daily life and the current issues of the Turkish community in Cyprus. This makes Bozkurt’s novels a treasure for folkloric literature studies. These novels are abundant in folkloric beliefsystems and practices, gastronomic traditions, special occasions, mythological figures and legends as well as the local dialect of the Turkish language. Kaza, the novel we are interested in for this article shares with the reader mythological figures and legends, gastronomic traditions and the Cyprus dialect of Turkish. The article describes the elements of the Cyprus Turkish culture in the novel and explains why the author choseto mention them in the novel, moving later on to examine the functions these elements carry out in the novel

The characters are located within a space, therefore they are closely connected because it is the space where they act. The spaces in this novel are both external and internal. The study also includes another dimension, that of the translation of Kadare's work in Romania, as well as the cultural-literary ties between Albania and Romania

Kajian intertekstualiti dalam novel-novel Siti Zainon Ismail / Norhayati Md. Yatim
Get PDFKajian ini menganalisis dua buah novel terpilih karya Siti Zainon Ismail, iaitu Pulau Renik Ungu (1995) dan Delima Ranting Senja (2009). Analisis dibuat dengan menggunakan teori intertekstualiti yang diperkenalkan oleh Julia Kristeva (1980). Tiga prinsip utama yang terdapat dalam teori intertekstualiti, iaitu prinsip transformasi, prinsip modifikasi dan prinsip ekspansi. Permasalahan kajian bertitik tolak daripada kecenderungan Siti Zainon Ismail berkarya dengan merujuk sumber-sumber asalnya (hipoteks) untuk disesuaikan ke dalam karyanya yang baharu (hiperteks). Hal ini berlaku kerana hubungan peribadi dan persekitaran sangat mempengaruhi kepengarangan Siti Zainon Ismail. Objektif kajian ini bertujuan untuk mengenal pasti sumber daripada hipoteks, mengaplikasikan prinsip-prinsip daripada teori intertekstualiti dan menilai faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan pengarang mengaplikasikan ketiga-tiga prinsip tersebut. Metodologi kajian yang diguna pakai adalah kajian kepustakaan dan temu bual. Dapatan kajian pula membuktikan bahawa Siti Zainon Ismail berkarya dengan merujuk sumber hipoteks dan melaksanakan proses transformasi sama ada secara formal atau berbentuk abstrak seperti kerja pemindahan dan penjelmaan episod untuk memperkukuh makna hipoteks. Terdapat juga proses-proses lain seperti penyesuaian, penukaran, peluasan dan pengembangan atau pembaikan daripada teks asal. Hal ini membolehkan teks asal berubah kepada bentuk baharu sama ada aspek kandungan ataupun pemerian plot penceritaan. Kesimpulannya, melalui pengaplikasian ketiga-tiga prinsip daripada teori intertekstualiti ini membuktikan bahawa pengarang berjaya mengolah karya hiperteksnya, iaitu menjadi sebuah karya yang mapan daripada pelbagai aspek seperti plot, tema, watak dan bahasa sehingga dapat menarik minat khalayak menghabiskan pembacaan terhadap karya tersebut
