Replication Data for: Correspondence Analysis of the Natural and Specialized Perfectives of the Russian verb putat’

    No full text
This dataset contains the database and statistical code used for a term paper in HIF-3082 Quantitative Methods in Linguistics, spring 2017. It includes two datasets (I and II). Dataset I is used for a synchronic analysis of the verb cluster putat’ ‘mix up, mess up, confuse, tangle’ in Russian. There are seven verbs in the analysis: the simplex imperfective putat’ and six of its perfectives. Dataset I involves 1400 examples from the Russian National Corpus (years 1950-2016) that are tagged with semantic category of the verbs’ patients. Based on these semantic categories, I run a Correspondence Analysis to explore the relationship between verb and type of patient. Dataset II involves 295 examples from the Russian National Corpus (years 1800-1849) of the same verbs. The examples are tagged with the same semantic categories of patients as the examples in Dataset I. I use Correspondence Analysis to see whether the behavior of the verbs have changed over 200 years, and with that, the relationships within the verb cluster

Together and apart. Perfective verbs with a prefix and the semelfactive suffix -nu- in Contemporary Standard Russian

This dissertation investigates Russian perfective verbs with a prefix and the semelfactive suffix -nu-, such as zaxlopnut’ ‘slam shut’, for the sake of simplicity referred to as “Pref-Nu verbs”. Pref-Nu verbs have received only marginal attention in the scholarly literature, and in the dissertation a main goal is therefore to shed light on their distribution and productivity in Contemporary Standard Russian, as well as the type of verb clusters and semantic classes they represent. A second main goal is to compare the behavior of Pref-Nu verbs with the behavior of perfective verbs that have only one of the two relevant affixes, i.e. only a prefix, such as zaxlopat’ ‘begin to slam’, or only the semelfactive suffix -nu , such as xlopnut’ ‘slam, clap, bang once’. All of these questions are explored with data from the Russian National Corpus (years 1950-2017), and, as a general tendency, Pref-Nu verbs are found to differ from the other two verb types in that they express a single “quantum” of an action that yields some result. The choice between Pref-Nu verbs and other perfectives is furthermore explored through an informant experiment that focuses on cases of near-synonymy between related verbs. The results of the experiment indicate that none of the verbs are fully synonymous, although their semantic differences are often subtle

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Replication data for: Prefix variation in Russian путать

This thesis explores the prefix variation in путать and consists of three case studies: Case study 1 “The choice of prefix under prefix variation”: Is it possible to predict the choice of prefix when there is prefix variation? And if yes, how? The analysis is based on 630 sentences of спутать, перепутать, запутать and впутать from the Russian National Corpus (RNC) and takes two factors into consideration: type of construction and semantic category of the internal argument. Since these questions are relevant for second-language learners, the author also discusses how the present study and similar ones, can be used to make second language learning of Russian more effective. Case study 2 “Aspectual strength and the aspectual relations of путать” What does it mean that a simplex verb uses more than one prefix to form Natural Perfectives? Are all of the Natural Perfectives Natural Perfectives to the same degree? If not, why are they different? These and related questions are discussed in this analysis, which is based on 768 sentences of путать and its four Natural Perfectives from the RNC. The author also discusses the choice of granularity level when using constructions to measure aspectual strength. Case study 3 “Путать and aspectual triplets” What is the relationship between the Primary and Secondary Imperfectives in an aspectual triplet? This case study gives a detailed analysis of the relationship between the Primary and Secondary Imperfectives in the triplets involving путать. The analysis is based on 638 examples of путать and the four relevant Secondary Imperfectives from the RNC and considers three hypotheses: (1) The Primary and Secondary Imperfectives in a triplet are used in different constructions (“The Semantic Differentiation Hypothesis”), (2) The Primary Imperfective is preferred in atelic contexts, while the Secondary Imperfective is preferred in telic contexts (“The Telicity Hypothesis”), and (3) The distribution between the Primary and Secondary Imperfectives in a triplet is motivated by the aspectual strength of the Primary Imperfective and Natural Perfective (“The Aspectual Strength Hypothesis”). On the basis of her findings, the author also discusses the question of synonymy: Does complete synonymy exist? Do the two imperfective verbs in a triplet display the exact same meaning

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

This case study of the four Natural Perfectives of the Russian simplex verb путать ‘tangle’ sheds light on the following questions: Is it possible to predict the choice of prefix when there is prefix variation in Russian? And if yes, how? Since these questions are particularly relevant for second-language learners, the author also discusses how the present study and similar ones, can be used to make second language learning of Russian more effective. The analysis is based on a database of 630 sentences from the Russian National Corpus (RNC) and takes two factors into consideration: type of construction and semantic category of the internal argument. The uploaded data contain 3 files: "Database, everything": Each sentence is tagged according to prefix, form of the verb (Active vs Passive), type of construction and semantic category of the internal argument. The four types of constructions and four types of semantic categories are explained with examples from the database inside the article. "Database_simplified": This version of the database contains the three parameters for the sentences: prefix, type of construction and semantic category of the internal argument. The simplified database was created to do statistical analyses in R. "R_putat": The R script that was used in order to produce the cTree which is presented in the article
