The place of homoaffectivity is constituted as mark of reading in the Brazilian literature. When talking about friendship and homoerotism in the fiction of John Gilberto Noll, it is possible to permit the expression of the subject in the face of his practices in the territory of the experiments with sex. The appeal to sexuality is a strong strategy to visualize the way that Noll's male characters are created, considering the way the experienced homosexual contacts in the relations of friendship are subjected. The nomad root is located in the orbit of Noll's novel according to a certain necessity of putting the man on the road in order to have his eye witness of what is seen in the passages. Thus, the narratives invite to participate in the reports of friendship in the movement of the urgent time. The author's first on the road narratives are woven to unveil the territories in which the expansion of the meeting manifests talk about relationships between and with men, supported by the author's other novels. It is about to question, through the narrative reports, the compliances of the homoerotic disparity aiming to reveal not one identity, but a way of self constitution to be the subject of sexuality. In this way, friendship acquires another sense. Here it is seen as a way of life, as the existence core and as the promise of reconstitution in the path of the sexual diversions. These are relevant matters on which the analysis is centred to comprehend the formation of Noll's literary narrative and the philosophic textuality of Michel Foucault. Reflecting on the theme of friendship as a homoerotic experiment is the basis of the main research which reflects man's drama with freedom, with the inventive, intensive and unpredictable movement slanted by these samples of speeches

    Response: Public Litigation, Private Arbitration?

How should legal disputes be allocated between litigation and arbitration? Given strong incentives for many actors to arbitrate everything, the question turns fundamentally on the scope of arbitration under the applicable law. In "Re-Inventing Arbitration: How Expanding the Scope of Arbitration Is Re-Shaping Its Form and Blurring the Line Between Private and Public Adjudication," Professor Deborah Hensler and Damira Khatam posit that the "public" or "private" nature of a dispute provides the key to whether it belongs in arbitration. While arbitration of private disputes is ok, disputes with "public policy dimensions" belong in the courts. Hensler and Khatam therefore suggest that Congress override Supreme Court decisions mandating arbitration of employment and consumer disputes, which, they contend, would restore domestic arbitration to its proper sphere. But can disputes really be divided into public and private categories that provide the key to whether they belong in arbitration? This Response suggests that on close examination it is exceedingly difficult to identify a reliable proxy for the public or private nature of a dispute. The absence of such a proxy suggests there is an inescapably political dimension to how disputes are allocated between litigation and arbitration. Whether a category of disputes should be heard in a public court because the disputes impact the public interest turns out to depend on contested judgments about where the public interest lies. This, in turn, suggests a more fundamental reason for Congress to revisit the scope of arbitration under the Federal Arbitration Act. If the allocation of disputes between litigation and arbitration is an inescapably political question, it should ideally be addressed by an institution accountable to democratic politics.A response to the paper: Hensler, D. & Khatam, D. Budde D, Albano G-L, Noll T, Jurkiewicz E. Interaction of leachable model compounds and their impact on Chinese hamster ovary cell cultivation. Biotechnology Progress. 2021: e3150.The presence of leachables in biopharmaceutical processes using single-use technologies (SUT) is well known. For the detection and quantification of the latter, extractable studies of SUT are very common nowadays. Although a mixture of compounds is regularly found in extractable studies, research has only been carried out regarding the effect of individual compounds on cell culture and the cumulative effect of a mix of leachables has not been investigated yet. In this study, a set of leachable model compounds (LMCs) was chosen and the effect of the LMCs on a Chinese hamster ovary DG44 cell line producing an IgG antibody was investigated concerning cell growth, cell cycle distribution and productivity. It was shown that even if worst-case concentrations were used, the LMCs solely impact cell growth. Additionally, interaction studies revealed that the inhibiting effect of the mix is lower than the expected cumulative effect. A strong antagonism between the antioxidant butylated hydroxytoluene and the plasticizer Tris(2-ethylhexyl)trimellitate was found using an isobologram analysis. © 2021 The Authors. Professional sports economics and competitive balance. Limits of a very used approach: "noll-Scully measure of Competitive Balance"

    No full text

The Economics of Scholarly Publications and the Information Superhighway

    No full text
This article examines the basic economics of scholarly publications, especially technical journals, and applies this model to the consequences of low-cost electronic publication. The article discusses the demand for scholarly publication: dissemination of new information to students, other researchers and professional users outside the educational community; reputation development by scholars and research institutions; and the evaluation of research personnel by peerds and superiors. The key supply feature of scholarely publication is that some uses are public goods, and others have strong economies of scale. Electronic publication reduces duplication and storage costs, but does not have much of an effect on fixed costs, and so is a minor technological change purely from the perspective of costs. However, electronic publication is a major change in two respects: it radically alters the relative costs of enhancements to straight textual material, and so may change the content of publications, and it dramatically reduces the cost of unauthorized duplication. The article focuses on the latter problem, and explores some of its possible consequences.
