Book Review: Schmieger, Roland; Dimitrova-Schmieger, Nina. Großwörterbuch Deutsch-Makedonisch. Bd. I–IV. Hamburg: Helmut Buske Verlag, 2015 (Great German-Macedonian Dictionary, vol. I-IV)
There has long been a dearth of good Macedonian dictionaries. For a long time the Macedonian-Serbocroatian dictionary compiled in the 1960s was the only serious Macedonian dictionary. The situation improved with the publication of a Macedonian-Polish dictionary and the Routledge Macedonian-English Dictionary, which was compiled at the ANU. Now we have a very large (hence the title "Great German-Macedonian Dictionary") compiled by the husband-and-wife team Roland Schmieger and Nina Dimitrova-Schmieger, combining a German native speaker and a native speaker of Macedonian. The dictionary is extremely good - the dictionary includes practically the entire German lexicon and the lexemes from all registers have been rendered with great felicity in the appropriate Macedonian style
Inhibition of zymosan-induced kidney dysfunction by tyrphostin AG-490
BACKGROUND: Zymosan-induced shock has been associated with an increased production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and mediators, causing a generalized dysfunction of liver, lung and kidneys. Herein, we investigate the effects of tyrphostin AG-490 on the early inflammation and on the late renal injury provoked by zymosan injection. METHODS: Shock was induced by intraperitoneal injection of zymosan in a dose of 0.8-1.0 mg/g body weight in BALB/c mice and 0.8 mg/g body weight in SCID mice. Tyrphostin AG-490 was administered intraperitoneally in a dose of 5 mg/kg immediately after shock induction. Blood, peritoneal lavage and kidneys were collected at certain time points after zymosan injection. The levels of MIP-1alpha, RANTES, IL-6, IL-10, alpha1-antitrypsin and C5a in plasma were determined by ELISA. The number of IL-10-secreting cells in peritoneum was assayed by ELISPOT. Kidney function was monitored by measurement of urine/plasma creatinine levels and proteinuria. Histological assessment of renal injury was performed in a blinded fashion after hematoxylin/eosin staining. Immunohistochemistry analyses were used to evaluate the expression of C5aR, STAT1, STAT3 and the binding ability of IgGs in kidneys. RESULTS: Tyrphostin AG-490 attenuated the early phase of zymosan-induced shock via inhibition of MIP-1alpha, RANTES and C5a plasma levels and via elevation of IL-10 in plasma. The drug increased IL-10 production in peritoneum and the number of IL-10-secreting peritoneal cells. AG-490 was able to retain the time of coagulation and the level of alpha1-antitrypsin to normal values. At the late stage of shock, AG-490 decreased scores of tubular injury, cell infiltration and glomerular lesions in parallel with diminished creatinine plasma level and protein excretion. These beneficial effects of AG-490 were related to lowered levels of circulating IL-6, MIP-1alpha and C5a, and to inhibited expression of STAT1, STAT3 and C5aR in kidneys. The drug diminished the production of zymosan-specific IgG antibodies and hindered the glomeruli from IgGs recognition. CONCLUSION: Tyrphostin AG-490 reduced the magnitude of the initial inflammatory response in zymosan-induced shock and prevented the development of severe kidney dysfunction. Our data suggest that the drug might be used as a therapeutic approach in cases where shock is combined with acute renal injury
Assen Ignatov: The Theomachist and the God-Seeker
Assen Ignatov: The Theomachist and the God-Seeker
This article aims to trace the evolution of Assen Ignatov’s attitude towards religion and to outline the main features of this change – from an intellectual whose worldview was initially Marxist to being a dissident philosopher known also for his respect for Christianity. The first part of the study is devoted to the early professional stages of Assen Ignatov’s life (as a lecturer at Sofia University), when he attacked the “Bourgeois” philosophy for its affinity to religion. Gradually, these initial attitudes were seriously shaken, partly because he was one of the very few erudite thinkers in Bulgaria during the “socialist” period who witnessed the dogmatism and narrow interests of the Party philosophers. In addition, his escape to Western Europe was a radical break with the past, specifically with regard to religion. Assen Ignatov interpreted communism as a pseudo-religion from the viewpoint of Christian personalism and existentialism. The author concludes that the radical change of Ignatov’s attitude towards religion shows the measure of his general change of worldview.
Asen Ignatow – w walce przeciw Bogu i w poszukiwaniu Boga
What a Difference Context Makes: Comparing Communication Strategies of Migration NGOs in Two Neighboring Countries
This research study compared non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working in the area of migration in two neighboring countries – Bulgaria and Turkey. Utilizing in-depth interviews with 39 NGO professionals in both countries, the analysis identified critical differences in public opinion dynamics, organizational structures and interdependencies, and government relationships. Further analysis unveiled how the local socio-economic and political context had impacted NGO communication strategies as well as the specific communication channels, public engagement activities, and social media campaigns in each country. Implications for communication scholarship during times of increasing migration flows and globalization are discussed. This article is published as Dimitrova, D., Ozdora-Aksak, E., What a Difference Context Makes: Comparing Communication Strategies of Migration NGOs in Two Neighboring Countries. Experiencing historical time: Apocalypse and authoritarianism in inter-war Bulgarian existential philosophy
Experiencing historical time: Apocalypse and authoritarianism in inter-war Bulgarian existential philosophy
This article deals with the sense of the pace of time as reflected in the works of Bulgarian philosophers from the “philosophy of life” school, and of other thinkers active in the humanities. It is shown that the feeling of “condensed” time among the authors of the inter-war period is inevitably associated with Biblical imagery – the “reduction” of time foresees the end of time. Several authors left a lasting mark on Bulgarian intellectual history due to their sensitivity to the sharp turns of the age, and their awareness of the intense “flow” of time.
The most prominent among tchem were Spiridon Kazandjiev and Yanko Yanev, authors with right-wing political leanings. This article reveals how the end of time provoked in them not only distress and anxiety but also exhilaration at what lay ahead, as if it were the realisation of a longcherished dream.
Doświadczanie czasu historycznego. Apokalipsa i autorytaryzm w bułgarskiej filozofii egzystencjalnej okresu międzywojennego
DOSTOIEVSKI ENTRE O CRISTIANISMO "ROSY" E O GNOSTICISMO
This article discusses Dostoyevsky’s ambivalent attitude to the world, his Gnostic assertions, and his world-accepting attitude. The author presents arguments supporting the conclusion that love for the world was the predominant attitude of Dostoyevsky, and clarifies the polysemantic concept of “world”. This attitude in Dostoyevsky is used to explain the strong attraction and reverence he felt for the “Russian startsi” phenomenon as an alternative to traditional monasticism and as an institution on which he set hopes that it might bring the Church closer to the “world”. The article presents some critical assessments made from the viewpoint of Orthodox doctrine regarding Dostoyevsky’s depiction of Russian “startsi” in his works
Biology vs. sociology and the progress of the national body (a theoretical debate in Bulgarian society in the inter-war period)
This text discusses the debate pro and contra the possibilities of biological sociology, the new scientific trend, with respect to its possible benefit for the progress of the nation – a priority issue in the inter-war period. The author presents the arguments of Bulgarian philosophers, sociologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, and other thinkers in the field of the humanities, who commented on the achievements of biology and medicine and their applications for “improving” man and making social life healthier by means of various kinds of negative eugenics. The article focuses on the theoretical controversy between the two approaches to society; their serious consequences are commented on primarily in the context of this debate. The discussion is also viewed as echoing European trends at that time regarding this new role of biology.
Two philosophical schools in Bulgaria – Rehmkeanism and Marxism – supported “autonomous sociology,” according to which human society is radically different from the sphere of nature, and the biological factor is not important for changing society. The opponents of this view, more numerous, maintained that heredity was more important than the influence of social environment and upbringing; hence, eugenics – the science of the genetics-based improvement of people and mankind – held many possibilities.
The article presents the variety of stances that appeared after the change of the intellectual paradigm of “biologizing” social sciences, as well as the actual attitudes underlying these stances. The author looks for traces of this debate coming down to the present day.
Biologia vs socjologia i postęp ciała narodowego (Pewna teoretyczna debata w społeczeństwie bułgarskim w okresie międzywojennym)
The role of value references in shaping cultures of engagement: evidence from COVID-19 news on Facebook in Romania and the U.K.
Values are consequential for opinion formation and remain a persuasive factor in shaping public attitudes. Still, the role of values remains under-researched in the context of online news production and engagement. This study investigates the intricate role values play by analyzing patterns of value references in online news coverage of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in two culturally distinct nations, Romania and the U.K. Conceptually, the study is based on Schwartz’s value typology; methodologically, it relies on the Concept Mover’s Distance method. Analyzing half a million Facebook posts, the study identifies four types of value references: universal, cultural, topic-based, and situational. We show that cultural values prevalent in British posts, such as stimulation and tradition, resonate with the culturally congruent context. Universal values, however, do not guarantee a high level of engagement. The findings underscore the nuanced impact of values in shaping online news engagement. This article is published as Cristina Monzer, Daniela V Dimitrova, The role of value references in shaping cultures of engagement: evidence from COVID-19 news on Facebook in Romania and the U.K., Human Communication Research, Volume 51, Issue 1, January 2025, Pages 40–51, https://doi.org/10.1093/hcr/hqae021.© The Author(s) 2024.
