Permeable borders through transformative practices from below : Comment on Nihad El-Kayed „Segregation als Grenzformation“
It is worthwhile to apply conceptual perspectives of border studies for segregation research, and to understand segregation as a form of border formation, as Nihad El-Kayed (2025) argues in the debate opening. This commentary particularly advocates an understanding of segregation as a socio-spatial process of border production (process of bordering) in urban spaces. The article draws on research on spatial justice, and the distinction between affirmative and transformative justice. Transformative changes requires segregation research to better integrate people’s perceptions of peripherisation and the perspectives of residents. I argue that planning should prioritise the development of locally based capacities to address local challenges. Area-based approaches should specifically facilitate transformative institutional practices that address the unequal reproduction of social-spatial differences in urban areas and contribute to structural improvements in living and housing conditions in segregated areas
Think about borders in a more complex way: Comment on Nihad El-Kayed „Segregation als Grenzformation“
Our contribution comments on Nihad El-Kayed\u27s proposal to bring segregation research into dialogue with perspectives from border studies. We explicitly endorse this proposal, yet we believe that the perspective of border research could be outlined even more clearly. With this in mind, we propose taking the plurality of border research seriously, and, in addition to the dimension of separation, also considering the connecting capacities of borders, thus doing justice to the complexity of border phenomena
Municipalities and landlords as producers of borders: Comment on Nihad El-Kayed „Segregation als Grenzformation“
This article takes up Nihad El-Kayed’s call for greater integration of segregation and border research. It uses a housing policy approach to ethnic segregation as an opportunity to highlight two continuities in the German discourse: First, it is common to assert that cities have limits in terms of urban infrastructure and become overburdened by immigration. The search for thresholds and limits and their translation into restrictions on the influx of new residents to certain neighbourhoods has long been a common practice. Second, housing providers have been producing boundaries in the service of creating a supposedly socially balanced resident structure on a daily basis for decades. The guiding principle of social mix gives institutional landlords considerable leeway in the selection, rejection and spatial sorting of individuals
Segregation as a Process of Border Formation
Both segregation research and border studies examine phenomena of sorting, separation, and arrangement of social groups in space. Segregation research usually focuses on residential location patterns in urban areas, while border studies tend to concentrate on nation-state demarcation lines. Despite their shared interest in processes of spatial sorting of people along social categorizations, and although border studies have increasingly addressed intra-state, locally embedded border processes in recent years, the two fields of research remain largely disconnected. This article proposes conceptualizing segregation as a border formation and asks how segregation research could be reoriented if understood as border studies. It argues that new impulses and opportunities arise for segregation research from thinking it together with perspectives on border processes and border regimes
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Urban arrival spaces as border areas of segregation? Comment on Nihad El-Kayed „Segregation als Grenzformation“
Given the importance of international immigration and forced migration for urban growth, a discussion has developed at the intersection of urban and migration sociology about the places in cities where migrants arrive, concentrate spatially and find the necessary support infrastructure and networks to facilitate their arrival – the so-called urban arrival spaces. The following article attempts to interpret this discussion from the perspective of borders. It aims to discuss arrival neighbourhoods as „border spaces“ and examine them from different angles. These angles highlight the porosity of borders and the filtering processes that can either make borders permeable, fix them in place or create new ones. In addition, arrival spaces are contested places between solidarity and rejection. The article is written from the perspective of urban sociology and addresses the discourse on border studies by referring to impulses from the debate
