No full textInternational audienceThe aim of this book is to understand workplaces, intended as both spaces of production and commerce, in the urban economy and society of the Roman world. These are viewed through the lens of Herculaneum, a small town all too often relegated to a complementary role in studies centred on nearby Pompeii. The introduction to the volume consists of a full critical revision of the work of Amedeo Maiuri, who brought to light most of Herculaneum. Here his publications of the site are compared with archival records of the excavations undertaken between 1927 and 1961. The book is subsequently divided in two parts. The first chapters describe a 'grammar' of the arrangements of the shops and workshops of Herculaneum. In the absence of specific evidence, the shop is identified by its ability to serve clients through a large opening onto the street, the basic characteristic of the taberna as a generic selling and manufacturing space. The other workspaces of Herculaneum are illuminated by their comparison with similar spaces in Pompeii. The detailed study of basic activities, food-retail and textile production, inserted in their respective 'production-chains', allows us to elaborate an archaeology of modes of production for the first century AD. Starting from an analysis of the history of different building-types associated with shops and workshops, the second part of this book follows the commercial and productive development of the first century AD town up-till the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, in parallel with recorded transformations to domestic building. The five insulae under study show a common evolutionary trend. The constant enlargement of the commercial element is accompanied by a fragmentation of the great domus in smaller units which always appear as independent apartments. Within this wider setting, single trajectories reveal the variety of economic choices made by members of the elite faced with the destruction caused by the earthquakes which rocked Herculaneum shortly before Vesuvius' eruption. At the end of this investigation the picture of Herculaneum will appear profoundly changed: far from being a town overran by sellers intent on wreaking havoc of existing social and economic hierarchies, the small centre possessed a commercial and productive landscape with a developing local emphasis which remained in the hands of the local elite throughout the first century AD despite recurring seismic activity.L'introduction appréhende le poids personnel d'A. Maiuri dans la perception devenue traditionnelle d'Herculanum, en comparant notamment ses publications avec les données contenues dans les archives des dégagements effectués entre 1927 et 1961. L'ouvrage est ensuite organisé en deux parties. Les premiers chapitres développent une véritable grammaire des aménagements présents dans les boutiques et les ateliers d'Herculanum. En l'absence de matériel spécifique, la boutique est d'abord caractérisée par sa capacité à accueillir la clientèle grâce à une large ouverture sur la rue : la taberna doit être perçue comme un espace générique. Les autres lieux de métier d'Herculanum sont éclairés par des comparaisons avec ceux de Pompéi. L'étude détaillée des pratiques pertinentes aux activités banales - alimentation et production textile -, insérées dans leurs chaînes opératoires respectives, permet d'esquisser une archéologie des techniques pour le Ier s. de notre ère. Fondée sur l'analyse des différentes constructions qui ont été associées au cours de leur histoire à des lieux de métier, la seconde partie suit le développement commercial et productif de la ville du Ier s. av. J.-C. à l'éruption du Vésuve, en parallèle avec les transformations de l'habitat. Les cinq îlots étudiés montrent une évolution générale commune : l'accroissement constant du tissu commercial accompagne le fractionnement continu des grandes domus en unités plus petites qui présentent toujours plus d'appartements indépendants dans les étages. Au sein de ce schéma global, les trajectoires singulières révèlent la variété des réactions des élites dans leurs choix économiques face aux destructions causées par les séismes ayant frappé la ville. Au terme de cette enquête, l'image d'Herculanum apparaît profondément renouvelée : loin d'être une ville brusquement envahie par des marchands qui auraient bouleversé les hiérarchies économiques et sociales, la petite cité possédait un tissu commercial et productif d'ampleur locale, en développement et resté aux mains des élites pendant le Ier s. de notre ère en dépit des perturbations provoquées par l'activité sismique

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Full text linkWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
