Phytochemical investigation of selected medicinal plants used by the Dao minority of Vietnam
Die traditionelle vietnamesische Medizin basiert auf zwei Prinzipien, den Einflüssen der Traditionellen Chinesischen Medizin (TCM) sowie eigenständigem Wissen, das durch die ethnische Diversität des Landes begründet ist. Mit Pflanzenmaterial, das von der Abteilung für Botanik, der Pharmazeutischen Universität Hanoi (Vietnam) zur Verfügung gestellt worden war, wurde die vorliegende Arbeit durchgeführt. Ihr Ziel war es, von den Dao, einer in Nordvietnam lebenden Volksgruppe, verwendete Heilpflanzen näher phytochemisch zu bearbeiten, d.h. Inhaltstoffe zu isolieren sowie deren biologische Aktivität zu untersuchen.
Die Blätter von Urceola rosea wurden von der Dao Gemeinde in Ba Vi, Hanoi als entzündungshemmendes Heilmittel verwendet. Phytochemische Untersuchungen zu dieser Droge führten zur Isolierung von dreizehn Verbindungen, großteils Flavonoide und Terpene. Zusätzlich wurde eine geeignete HPLC-Methode entwickelt um die Hauptverbindungen in der Pflanze zu quantifizieren. Die Ergebnisse zeigten starke Schwankungen im Gehalt der Flavonoide (0.30-1.07%) und Chlorogensäure (0.14-0.66%). Um zu bestätigen, dass diese Ergebnisse richtig und genau sind, wurde das ausgearbeitete Analysenverfahren validiert.
Ein wichtiger Bestandteil der Kräuterbäder, die von den Dao in Sapa, Lao Cai zur Kräftigung von Frauen nach der Geburt angewendet werden, ist Fissistigma polyanthoides. Aus den Stielen der Pflanze konnten 34 Verbindungen isoliert werden, davon stellten sechzehn gänzlich neue Naturstoffe dar. Ein typisches Merkmal der gefundenen Terpene war die Verknüpfung einer Sesquiterpen-Grundstruktur mit (2ʹ-O-trans-cinnamoyl)-β-ᴅ-Glucose. Einige der neuen Terpene, die Polyanthoside A bis E, hemmten die NF-κB/AP-1 Kaskade (IC50 13.7-49.0 µM) in THP1-Blue-CD14 Zellen, was auf eine moderate entzündungshemmende Eigenschaft hinweist. Die ebenso isolierten phenolischen Verbindungen wurden auf eine Inhibierung der ROS Bildung in humanen Bronchialepithelzellen (BEAS-2B) getestet. Die stärkste Aktivität wies dabei Quercetin 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosid (IC50 18.8 µM) auf.
Die im Ba Vi Distrikt beheimateten Dao verwendeten die Stiele von Rourea minor zur Behandlung von Arthritis. Aus dieser Droge konnten 23 Inhaltsstoffe isoliert werden, darunter 5 Bergeninderivate, 8 Flavonoide, 2 Lignane, ein Phenylpropanglukosid, ein Cumarin, und 6 sauerstoffhaltige Fettsäuren. Alle Verbindungen wurden zum ersten Mal in dieser Heilpflanze nachgewiesen, zwei stellten neue Naturstoffe dar. Die Hauptverbindungen wurden zudem zur Entwicklung einer CE Methode benutzt, die ihre quantitative Bestimmung in der Rohdroge erlaubte.
Somit kann man sagen, dass die in dieser Arbeit beschriebenen Untersuchungen an drei, von den Dao verwendeten Heilpflanzen zur Isolierung einer Vielzahl von Verbindungen (70) führten, wovon 18 gänzlich neue Substanzen waren. In größerer Menge vorhandene Inhaltsstoffe wurden zudem für weiterführende analytische und pharmakologische Studien verwendet. Letztere wiesen teilweise auf ein entzündungshemmendes und antioxidatives Potential hin, was die traditionelle Verwendung der Drogen bestätigt. Urceola rosea leaves have been commonly used for their anti-inflammatory properties in the Dao community in Ba Vi, Hanoi. The phytochemical investigation of U. rosea leaves resulted in the identification of thirteen compounds, which mainly belong to the classes of flavonoids and terpenoids. Besides that, a suitable HPLC method was developed permitting the quantification of major compounds in the plant, which revealed a high content of total flavonoids (0.30-1.07%) and chlorogenic acid (0.14-0.66%) in the samples. Method validation was conducted to assure the quality, reliability, and consistency of the analytical results presented.
Fissistigma polyanthoides stems are an important ingredient of the Dao’s herbal bath therapy in Sapa, Lao Cai province for recuperating women’s health after childbirth. Thirty-four compounds were isolated and structurally characterized, including sixteen new and eighteen known natural products. A characteristic feature of many of the isolated terpenoids was the substitution of the sesquiterpenoid scaffold with (2ʹ-O-trans-cinnamoyl)-β-ᴅ-glucopyranoside. Some of the new terpenoids, namely polyanthosides A-E, showed inhibitory effects on NF-κB/AP-1 signalling (IC50 13.7-49.0 µM) in the THP1-Blue-CD14 cell line, suggesting a moderate anti-inflammatory capacity. The isolated phenolics were tested for the inhibition of ROS formation in the human bronchial epithelial cells (BEAS-2B). Most active was quercetin 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside (IC50 18.8 µM).

Twenty-three compounds, including five bergenin derivatives, eight flavonoids, two lignans, one phenylpropanoid glucoside, one coumarin, and six oxygenated fatty acids were identified in this herbal drug. All compounds were isolated for the first time from R. minor, and two of them are new natural products. Furthermore, the major constituents were used for developing a CE method, which was successfully applied to the quantitative analysis of several R. minor samples.
In conclusion, phytochemical studies on three selected medicinal plants collected in the Dao ethnic community have resulted in the isolation of a multitude of compounds (70), including eighteen previously undescribed natural products. Those available in larger amount were used for perpetuating analytical and pharmacological studies. The latter showed the potential anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capacity of selected compounds, which can contribute to a better understanding of the plant’s traditional usage. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
