No full textPhillip Herring (1936- ) is a scholar and biographer, who taught English at the University of Wisconsin at Madison for over twenty five years. He attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he was awarded a Ph.D. in 1966, and later worked at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center. Herring is the author of Joyce's Uncertainty Principle (1987), Djuna: the Life and Work of Djuna Barnes (1995), and is the co-editor of Djuna Barnes's Collected Poems: With Notes Towards the Memoirs (2005). His papers consist of correspondence, photographs, and other materials accumulated during the writing of his Barnes biography. Subjects include Djuna Barnes, her family and friends, and locations relating to Barnes's life

Catholic Newman Center Blessing (2009)
No full textThis video is a ceremony of blessing and dedication of the new Catholic Newman Center. In this video, Reverend Phillip (Phil) Smith speaks on how the Holland House was built for Former President J. Earl Danieley and his family and then occupied by J. Fred Young’s family during his Presidency. The Holland House was moved in 2009 to be rededicated as the Catholic Newman Center. The Catholic Newman Center was named in honor of John Henry Cardinal Newman. Leo M. Lambert reflects on the vision of the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life at Elon University. The benefactor, Edna Truitt Noiles, had a hope for the students at Elon University that a student’s time was not a four year respite from the their spiritual faith, but rather they would use the time at Elon to explore their faith and other faiths with a bigger and noble purpose. The Elon administration hopes that the adult mentors of the Newman Center will move into quarters of a larger multi-faith center that will bring together all the chaplains into one facility. The Catholic Newman Center, which will be the first of several homes of faith at Elon, will affirm the religious identities of various religious groups on campus. There is a reason why the Catholics have a residence home first and that reason is Father Gerry Waterman. Others who assisted in making this dedication possible included: Smith Jackson, Richard McBride, Phillip (Phil) Smith, and so many others. Clay and Linda King along with their daughter, Carolyn A. King (class of 2009) are among a few members in the audience. In addition, Timothy and Sandra Mather along with their son, Ryan Mather (class of 2009) and Ralph and Mary Darling along with their son, Thomas (Tom) Mather (class of 2013) contributed to the Catholic Newman Center. These families have been beneficiaries for the Catholic Newman Center with vision and generosity. The Most Reverend Bishop Michael F. Burbidge said prayers, blessings, and dedicated the Catholic Newman Center with holy water. The 4,000 square foot Catholic Newman Center is the home for students to live, study, gather for dinners, and small groups. Following something that happens during many Elon events, the train came through the Town of Elon as the outdoor blessing and dedication of the Catholic Newman Center event was occurring. Father Gerry Waterman expresses his appreciation to The Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge, Leo M. Lambert, donors, Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Burlington, North Carolina, and to the diocese of Raleigh, North Carolina. Father Gerry Waterman concluded with saying that the historical Holland House is now a reality of the new Catholic Newman Center on South Campus at Elon University.
