Inhibition of Dendritic Calcium Influx by Activation of G-Protein–Coupled Receptors in the Hippocampus

Gi proteins inhibit voltage-gated calcium channels and activate inwardly rectifying K+ channels in hippocampal pyramidal neurons. The effect of activation of G-protein–coupled receptors on action potential-evoked calcium influx was examined in pyramidal neuron dendrites with optical and extracellular voltage recording. We tested the hypotheses that 1) activation of these receptors would inhibit calcium channels in dendrites; 2) hyperpolarization resulting from K+ channel activation would deinactivate low-threshold, T-type calcium channels on dendrites, increasing calcium influx mediated by these channels; and 3) activation of these receptors would inhibit propagation of action potentials into dendrites, and thus indirectly decrease calcium influx. Activation of adenosine receptors, which couple to Gi proteins, inhibited calcium influx in cell bodies and proximal dendrites without inhibiting action-potential propagation into the proximal dendrites. Inhibition of dendritic calcium influx was not changed in the presence of 50 μM nickel, which preferentially blocks T-type channels, suggesting influx through these channels is not increased by activation of G-proteins. Adenosine inhibited propagation of action potentials into the distal branches of pyramidal neuron dendrites, leading to a three- to fourfold greater inhibition of calcium influx in the distal dendrites than in the soma or proximal dendrites. These results suggest that voltage-gated calcium channels are inhibited in pyramidal neuron dendrites, as they are in cell bodies and terminals and thatG-protein–mediated inhibition of action-potential propagation can contribute substantially to inhibition of dendritic calcium influx. </jats:p

Youth incarceration: A look behind locked doors
No full textDouglas College and the New Westminster Museum collaborated to host the Tick-Talk: Crime and Consequences Student Conference, which featured criminology students' presentations on a variety of crime, justice, and social issues. Adopting a fast-paced presentation format, students raised key issues and challenges, described personal experiences, and disseminated unique ideas in a public forum. Presentation topics included the right to legal representation, the over-representation of Indigenous peoples in Canada’s criminal justice system, youth justice policy, and connections between mental health and criminal justice. The conference also included several discussion sessions that generated valuable dialogue among students, academics, practitioners, and members of the public. --- Rebecca Lambert presented on youth incarceration and the reality for troubled youth within Canada's youth criminal justice system. Lambert argued that incarcerated youth are not being adequately prepared for reintegration, and called for appropriate disciplinary measures, transition and reintegration programs, and further resources to help incarcerated youth develop personally and professionally.Not peer reviewe

Case: A case of syringomatous eccrine carcinoma arising in the perineum is presented, and the literature reviewed. Conclusions: Non-squamous malignancy of the vulva should be considered. The authors of “Re-envisioning Cyprus” come from different disciplines – such asanthropology, social sciences, art history, literature, cultural theory and visual arts. They usevarious methods – some excavate past images, and some produce or comment on newones. They exploit all kinds of materials – such as press, studio or vernacular photos, statues,landmarks, urban constructions and religious spaces. What united them is first their wish tosee Cyprus with their own eyes and with their own minds, rather than through officialisinglenses, or narratives. Second, they are rather interested in photography, and how it can helpour conceptual understanding of the island.
The images each author has selected or produced will be included in the accompaniedexhibition. The exhibition will feature the work of visual artists from Cyprus and abroad andwill be opened by the Minister of Education and Culture, Mr. Andreas Demetriou onWednesday, December 8th at 8pm.

Lambert, Hendricks & Ross: American ventriloquism
No full textIt has been fifty-one years since the last Lambert, Hendricks & Ross studio recording. Since then Dave Lambert was tragically killed on the Connecticut Turnpike, Jon Hendricks has become a University of Toledo professor, and Annie Ross is still performing frequently worldwide. Few jazz vocalists are accepted into the scholastic canon. Fewer are filed in the annals of music history. But, if any vocalists should be regarded important to the story of jazz music it is LHR. Their impact on the art of vocalese has yet to be fully felt. In exploring the motivation behind the group’s dense, meticulous, trailblazing recordings, this study attempts to be a supplement for what was too much for liner notes in the late 50’s and 60’s, while simultaneously giving a brief encompassing historical outline. It does this by clarifying key concepts and terms and illustrating these with examples taken from the author’s own research and other investigations. The chapter first explains the concepts of independent, dependent and other variables and why controlling them is important. Three types of quantitative design are then considered: experiments, quasi-experiments and non-experiments, together with notions of internal and external validity. The purposes and limitations of randomized control trials (RCTs) are examined, again with critical reference to real research. In discussing data analysis, readers are introduced to important concepts, including descriptive statistics, central tendency and standard deviation, as well as inferential statistics, statistical significance, effect size, correlation and factor analysis. To conclude, the author recommends that improving the understanding of quantitative data can help all researchers to assess quantitative investigations more critically and to integrate use into their own research projects
