Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

The practice of horticulture among the builders of Sambaquis and Coastal Camps in the São Francisco Bay Region, Santa Catarina: a bio-anthropological approach

The horticulture practice among Brazilian pre-historic groups is an important issue which investigation faces the absence, almost complete, of vegetables remains satisfactorily preserved. As a result, in most cases, the usage of cultigens uses to be inferred from indirect evidences and ethnographic analogy, mainly concerning the seaside environment context. Some researchers have tried alternatives in the Biological Anthropology, aiming, this way, to add biological and cultural information, intending to build a more complex information matrix about the question. It is within this bioanthropological approach that the present work is inserted, as long as it proposes to incorporate to the archeological data other data generated from the osteological markers related to the subsistence and to the carbohydrate consumption. The research begun from the hypothesis, constructed by the Archeology, that the groups accountable for the Itararé ceramics settlements (coastal camps) in the São Francisco bay area, in the Santa Catarina state, would have a agricultural subsistence system, while the sambaqui groups without ceramics in the same region would be gatherers-fishers. The behaviour related to caries, oclusal wear, antemortem tooth loss, periapical abscess, linear enamel hypoplasia and criba orbitalia were analyzed in 10 skeletal series originated from the sites without ceramics and in 3 series excavated in sites (or depositional layers) with ceramics. The several patterns found were discussed under the light of the archeological evidences and from a critical postura regarding the osteological markers capability to answer questions about subsistence. The results pointed to the need of a revision in the established hypotheses, about the vegetable consumption, concerning the subsistence strategies implemented by the pre-historic sambaqui groups and coastal camps in the focused region

The main objective of this dissertation is an ethnographic study performed from an ethnoecologic perspective of some caiçara communities inhabiting the Estaçâo Ecológica de Juréia-Itatins, in the southern coast of the State of Sao Paulo. Knowledge of caiçara culture is scarce - even its definition and characterization are still being questioned - and only scant information can be obtained from studies related to subsistence strategies, belief systems, and adaptation to environment. It is intended here to discuss the ways and means by which the caiçaras developed their relationship to their environment through time, following the historical process of changes undergone by the Vale do Ribeira region, also including the establishment of the Estação Ecológica de Jureia-Itatins. The EEJI is a conservation unit of 80,000 hectares including the Atlantic ecosystem or the Atlantic Forest. To achieve this aim, social organization, environment managing and historical aspects were discussed. Data was based on ethnoknowledge - obtained by means of informal and semi-structered interviews - as well as by participative and indirect observations, associated to visits and field diagnosis. This study opted for a strongly materialistic point of view of the man environment relationship, within specific historical, economic, social, political and environmental backgrounds in the anthropology-ecology interface. This interface enriches ecology, as it allows relating such contexts to handling practices, to social-cultural dynamics and to the decision taking which will allow human societies to survive, reproduce and develop their culture. Most of the researches considering such aspects in Brazil concentrated mainly on aboriginal or caboclo riverside populations of the Amazon Basin

A comparative study of the biological well being of two Amazonian caboclo populations situated in the Amazon Basin, in two different ecosystems (seazonal and estuarine várzeas), was undertaken. The main objective was to evaluate if the basin typology proposed for the Amazon region (Sioli 1984), based on the kind of water (clear, white, black), could explain the variability in biological well being among caboclo populations. Nutritional status was used as an indicator of well being, and was assessed with the use of food intake and anthropometry. Two hypothesis were tested: (1) caboclo populations living in the same basin do not show significant differences in nutritional status; (2) local ecological differences affect the nutritional status of caboclo populations living in the same basin. The conclusions were: (1) caboclo populations living in different ecosystems in the Amazon basin show significant differences in nutritional status; (2) caboclo populations living within the same ecosystem show some differences in nutritional status; (3) the populations investigated are affected by chronic undernutrition, that cannot be explained only in terms of insufficient food intake; (4) acute undernutrition was not observed; (5) caboclos basic diet, consisting of fish and manioc as staple foods, is adequate in terms of protein intake, but slightly insufficient in terms of energy intake; (6) women may be more buffered than man against environmental variations in food availability; (7) environmental causes alone are not enough to explain differences in the nutritional well being of caboclo populations, and other factors should be considered (historical, cultural, political and economical)

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Style and quality of life in San Pedro de Atacama: The subadult skeletons evidence

A high number of skeletons exumated allows a rich interchange between archaeology and biological anthropology. This study analyzed subadult skeletons from San Pedro de Atacama. The sample is composed by 90 subadult skeletons (less than twenty years) from three burial sites: Solcor-3, Coyo-3 e Quitor-6; they are dated from between 250 to 1240 A.D. Style and biological quality of life were infered throught eight osteological markers. Two approaches were carried out in this study: comparison of style and biological quality of life between Atacameneans prehistoric periods and world-wide groups. The first compared four prehistoric periods of San Pedro: before the influence of Tiwanaku Empire, peak of Tiwanaku influence, final period of Tiwanaku influence and after Tiwanaku influence. The main hypothesis tested in this approach is the significative improvement of biological quality of life in San Pedro de Atacama during the peak of Tiwanaku influence. The second approach joined the skeletons from the four periods in a single sample. These data caracterized the biological quality of life of Atacameneans subadults. The aim was testing if the biological quality of life in San Pedro de Atacama would be within the variation found in agricultural subsistence strategy. The results of the periods\' comparison show that only caries frequencies corroborated the main hypothesis, while the other markers presented a variable pattern. Results of the world-wide analysis showed that San Pedro is within the range of agriculture category. However, it was found out that, except for caries, the osteological markers showed high variation in different world-wide populations within the same subsistence strategy. Caries, abscess and hypoplasias in San Pedro de Atacama were above the world-wide agricultural mean, while porotic hyperostosis, infections and traumas were below. In brief, it was found a complex pattern, in which each osteological marker responds to a particular group of natural and cultural characteristics of the prehistory of Atacamenean population

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
