Consumption Taxes and Redistribution
Get PDFIt is relatively well known that the introduction of consumption taxation as an alternative in the tax code, and as the main source of government revenues, leads to a more efficient tax system.
However the conventional wisdom is that the change from the actual tax code, based on taxation of capital and labor income to this consumption based system, has undesirable distributional consequences. In this work a very simple method is developed to argue that the converse is the most reasonable outcome from that fundamental tax reform. The main difference in relation to the literature comes from the assumed source of household heterogeneity. Additionally it is shown that the inclusion of a tax on consumption allows for redistributive policies with no costs in terms of efficiency.

inédito de Natália Correia” é um trabalho que tem como objetivo contribuir para um
alargamento continuado de estudos incidentes sobre a análise discursiva de cartas pessoais
não publicadas de autores consagrados.
Neste estudo, a análise do texto epistolar recai sobre as sete cartas de amor que se
encontram incluídas nos arquivos da correspondência de Natália Correia e de Dórdio
Guimarães, na Biblioteca Pública e Arquivo Regional de Ponta Delgada: seis escritas pela
autora cujo destinatário é Dórdio Guimarães, o seu quarto marido; uma redigida por ele,
para a sua eterna amada. Também são consideradas as breves mensagens incluídas em
três postais enviados por Natália para Dórdio.
A partir das memórias impressas na correspondência pessoal de Natália, que
constitui o corpus textual da análise da superfície discursiva deste estudo, são revelados
aspetos do seu relacionamento amoroso com Dórdio Guimarães, que importa serem
considerados sobretudo à luz do discurso epistolar da autora.
Deste modo, procura-se evidenciar a importância que o texto epistolar pode ter no
desvendamento dos sentimentos de Natália Correia em relação a Dórdio Guimarães,
apesar das perceções que, muitas vezes, foram geradas e manifestadas, publicamente, por
amigos que lhe eram mais próximos.“Do segredo à revelação: subsídios para o estudo retórico-discursivo do
epistolário inédito de Natália Correia (From secrecy to revelation: subsidies for the rhetoricdiscursive study of Natália Correia's unpublished epistolary)” is a work that aims to
contribute to a continued widening of studies on the discursive analysis of unpublished
personal letters by renowned authors.
In this study, the analysis of the epistolary text talks about the seven love letters
that are included in the correspondence archive of Natália Correia and of Dórdio
Guimarães, in the Ponta Delgada Public Library and Regional Archive: six written by the
author to Dórdio Guimarães, her fourth husband; one written by him for his eternal
beloved. Are also considered three short messages of postcards sent by Natália to Dórdio.
From the memories printed in these personal letters, which constitute the textual
corpus of the discursive surface analysis of this study, are revealed aspects of Natália
Correia's love relationship with Dórdio Guimarães. Those aspects should be considered
above all in the author's epistolary discourse.
Thus, it is evident the importance that the epistolary text has in unveiling the
feelings of Natália Correia about Dórdio Guimarães, despite the perceptions that were
often generated and publicly expressed by friends who were closer to her
Optimal Fiscal and Monetary Policy: Equivalence Results
Get PDFIn this paper, we analyze the implications of price setting restrictions for the conduct of cyclical fiscal and monetary policy. We consider an environment with monopolistic competitive firms, a shopping time technology, prices set one period in advance, and government expenditures that must be financed with distortionary taxes. We show that the sets of (frontier) implementable allocations are the same independently of the degree of price stickiness. Furthermore, the sets of policies that decentralize each allocation are also the same except in the extreme cases of flexible and sticky prices, where the sets are larger but still include that common set of policies. In this sense we establish an irrelevance or equivalence of environments. We also describe the minimal set of instruments, in the different environments, and thus discuss equivalence and neutrality of fiscal and monetary instruments. In particular we show that state contingent debt is not necessary, provided there are both consumption and labor income taxes.

Modulating the structure of EGFR with UV light:new possibilities in cancer therapy
Get PDFThe epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is a member of the ErbB family of receptor tyrosine kinases. EGFR is activated upon binding to e.g. epidermal growth factor (EGF), leading to cell survival, proliferation and migration. EGFR overactivation is associated with tumor progression. We have previously shown that low dose UVB illumination of cancer cells overexpressing EGFR prior to adding EGF halted the EGFR signaling pathway. We here show that UVB illumination of the extracellular domain of EGFR (sEGFR) induces protein conformational changes, disulphide bridge breakage and formation of tryptophan and tyrosine photoproducts such as dityrosine, N-formylkynurenine and kynurenine. Fluorescence spectroscopy, circular dichroism and thermal studies confirm the occurrence of conformational changes. An immunoassay has confirmed that UVB light induces structural changes in the EGF binding site. A monoclonal antibody which competes with EGF for binding sEGFR was used. We report clear evidence that UVB light induces structural changes in EGFR that impairs the correct binding of an EGFR specific antibody that competes with EGF for binding EGFR, confirming that the 3D structure of the EGFR binding domain suffered conformational changes upon UV illumination. The irradiance used is in the same order of magnitude as the integrated intensity in the solar UVB range. uma leitura crítica da obra da autora portuguesa Hélia Correia, centrada nas marcas da cultura
clássica. Analisa em particular a figura da heroína, no âmbito teórico da releitura a partir da ruína,
propondo ainda uma reflexão sobre a noção de herói clássico, através de diversas antinomias:
divindade/humanidade, beleza/desvio, coragem/violência. A partir de um levantamento de modelos
heroicos, essencialmente, das variantes épica e trágica, pretende-se também fazer uma reflexão sobre
valores axiológicos da figura heroica, nomeadamente morais, políticos, sociais e culturais. Do universo
literário de Hélia Correia, seleciona-se um corpus circunscrito à dimensão da releitura clássica, a partir
do qual se propõe um levantamento de temas, imagens, mitos que reconfiguram tipologicamente a
personagem. Numa abordagem secundária do ponto de vista da análise comparatista, serão
estabelecidas relações com outros objetos, quer de caráter intertextual quer interartístico, para um
entendimento mais alargado dos processos de releitura clássica no contexto de produção interartística
contemporânea.This research project, entitled Figurations of the Heroine: Re-readings of Classical Culture in Hélia
Correia, proposes a critical reading of the work by the Portuguese author Hélia Correia focusing on the
traces of classical culture. The project particularly analyses the figure of the female hero, within the
theoretical framework of re-reading from the figure of the ruin, while also proposing a reflection on the
notion of the classical hero, through several antinomies: divinity/humanity, beauty/deviation,
courage/violence. Through a mapping of heroic models, essentially of epic and tragic variants, this
thesis also proposes a reflection upon the axiological values of the heroic figure, namely moral, political,
social, and cultural. The corpus, which is limited to the dimension of the classical re-reading, was
selected from the literary universe of Hélia Correia and provides a catalog of themes, images, and
myths that typologically reconfigure the character of the heroine. In a secondary approach from the
point of view of comparative analysis, other relations are established with other objects, of intertextual
and interartistic nature, for a broader understanding of the processes of classical re-readings in the

O que sente o cliente: Impacto da perceção de emoções e de justiça no Burnout em enfermeiros

mecanismo adaptativo do bem-estar psicológico e que a infrahumanização, isto é, negar, por
vezes, a atribuição de emoções secundárias no outro é um mecanismo de defesa utilizado
pelos profissionais de saúde para reduzir os sintomas de burnout. Neste sentido, o presente
estudo tem como objetivo principal medir e correlacionar a CMJ Geral, as Emoções
Negativas percecionadas e o Burnout nos Enfermeiros e testar o efeito protetor conjunto da
CMJ Geral e das Emoções Negativas na predição do Burnout.
Para medir estas três variáveis foi aplicado um questionário on-line a enfermeiros
portugueses (N=193), sendo 88% dos participantes do sexo feminino (N=170). Desta amostra,
foram medidas e analisadas as seguintes variáveis: a CMJ Geral; as dimensões das Emoções
Negativas que são as emoções primárias negativas e as emoções secundárias negativas; e as
três dimensões do Burnout, que são o Burnout Pessoal, o Burnout relacionado com o
Trabalho e o Burnout relacionado com o Cliente.
Os resultados demonstraram que os enfermeiros com elevados níveis de CMJ Geral
apresentam níveis mais baixos de Burnout e que tanto as emoções primárias negativas como
as emoções secundárias negativas moderam esta relação. Ou seja, quanto maior é a CMJ
Geral menor é o Burnout (Pessoal, relacionado com o Trabalho e o Cliente) quando são
percecionadas elevadas emoções negativas primárias e secundárias. Contudo, quando são
percecionadas emoções secundárias negativas não existe associação significativa entre a CMJ
Geral e o Burnout relacionado com o Cliente.Earlier studies have shown that Belief in Just World (BJW) becomes an adaptive
mechanism of psychological well-being and that infrahumanization, that is, sometimes
denying the attribution of secondary emotions in the other is a defense mechanism used by
health professionals to reduce the symptoms of burnout. In this sense, the present study aims
to measure and correlate BJW General, perceived negative emotions and burnout in nurses
and to test the joint protective effect of BJW General and negative emotions in predicting
burnout.
To measure these three variables, an online questionnaire was applied to Portuguese
nurses (N = 193), with 88% of female participants (N = 170). From this sample, the following
variables were measured and analyzed: the BJW General; the dimensions of
Infrahumanization the two dimensions of Negative Emotions which are negative primary
emotions and negative secondary emotions; and the three dimensions of Burnout, which are
Personal Burnout, Work-related Burnout, and Client-related Burnout.
The results showed that nurses with high levels of BJW General had lower levels of
Burnout and that both negative primary emotions and negative secondary emotions moderate
this relationship. That is, the higher the General BJW the lower the Burnout (Personal, Work
and Client related) when high primary and secondary negative emotions are perceived.
However, when negative secondary emotions are perceived there is no significant association
between BJW General and Customer related Burnout
