Selection for growth, muscling and fatness alters the maternal performance and intermediary metabolism of Merino ewes
There is growing interest in selectively breeding Merinos with higher growth and muscling and lower fatness. The effects of selection for these traits on ewe intermediary metabolism, body composition, reproduction and milk production and on lamb birthweight, survival and growth were studied in a series of experiments and analyses.
Ewes with higher genetic propensity for early growth had higher mature weight, reproductive rate, lamb birthweight, ewe milk production and lamb growth rate. Ewes with higher growth also had a higher circulating level of growth hormone during lactation.
Ewes with higher genetic propensity for muscling had a higher reproductive rate and produced lambs that were lighter at birth, but this did not result in lower lamb survival. Ewes with higher muscling maintained a higher condition score which may be at least partly attributed to a lower response to adrenaline at the level of the muscle in these higher muscled ewes. Similarly higher muscled ewes had lower growth hormone concentration in lactation which would result in lower mobilisation of tissues. In addition peripheral tissues were less responsive to insulin in high muscled ewes and blood glucose levels were also higher during the non-breeding state in high muscled ewes.
The genetic fatness of ewes was positively associated with lamb birthweight but only when nutrition was restricted suggesting that ewes with a higher genetic propensity for fatness can buffer lamb birthweight under periods of poor nutrition. Ewes with higher genetic fatness had lower circulating growth hormone and a greater response to insulin providing potential mechanisms for the observed higher fatness. Furthermore, response to adrenaline at the level of liver was greater in ewes with higher fatness suggestive of a higher capacity for gluconeogenesis. The combined results of this work suggest that actively selecting Merino ewes to have higher growth, muscling and fatness is likely to have positive reproduction and therefore economic outcomes
La transferibilidad de los permisos de maternidad y paternidad en la encrucijada. Entrevista con Patricia Merino
We present a dialogue held in the fall of 2019 with Patricia Merino, master`s degree in feminist studies from the Complutense University of Madrid, is the author of the essay Maternidad, igualdad y fraternidad: las madres como sujeto político en las sociedades postlaborales and, is the spokeswoman for the Platform of Feminist Mothers for the Expansion of Transferable Permits too. We talked with her about feminism and PETRA's trajectory and its political goals, about the mothers as a political subject as well as of the need for more support for parenting and childhood. We address, especially, the critical stance that PETRA supports against the approval of Royal Decree-Law 6/2019, which extended to 4 months the non-transferable paternity rights in the Spain.

Baltasar Merino was a Spanish botanist, author of 713 names of a new taxon in Cormophyta.
Many of these names are not typified. In the division Pteridophyta described 20 new names and
in this work nomenclatural types are designated for some of those names. An exhaustive search
was made of the names validly published by Merino in Pteridophyta and 648 conserved sheets
were examined in its work herbarium (LOU) as well as in the separate collections of MHN-Merino,
ISC-Merino and MA were examined. 11 lectotypes and 1 neotype are designated for 12 new names
in the Pteridophyta division previously not typified, and 1 epitype for a previously lectotypified
name. A modification is made in a previous lectotypification. They remain untypified 8 names.Baltasar Merino fue un botánico español autor de 713 nombres de táxones nuevos en Cormophyta,

Flock management to control fluorosis of merino sheep in Queensland
An investigation was made to determine how fluorosis in merino sheep could be alleviated by variations in the time of exposure to and protection from fluorided water. As a result of this study, together with findings recorded previously by the author, a system of flock management is recommended. The system is based on the presence or provision of alternative fluorine-free water, but enables the maximum use of fluorided water with the minimum of damage to sheep
Incisor Disorders of Merino Sheep (<em>Ovis aries</em>)
\ua9 The Author(s) 2025. This study documents dental anomalies in 2414 Merino ewe sheep (Ovis aries) from 7 Australian Merino Sire Evaluation Association sites observed during routine husbandry. Teeth were photographed and evaluated using visual scoring protocols to assess plaque accumulation, enamel wear, and other anomalies across all incisors. Plaque scoring revealed a median plaque score of 3 (IQR \ub1 1) on buccal surfaces and 2 (IQR \ub1 2) on lingual surfaces, indicating substantial plaque accumulation across incisors. Two cases of geminated incisors and one case of fused central incisors were identified, representing the first documented cases in sheep and expanding existing knowledge of dental anomalies in sheep. Dental wear assessments showed that 13% of 10-month-old ewes and 33% of 20-month-old ewes had significant enamel loss or pulp exposure, with an average of 2 teeth per affected ewe displaying pulp necrosis. Amelogenesis imperfecta was recorded in 5% of the younger and 37% of the older groups. Missing incisors, suggesting early dentition changeover, were observed in 9% of 20-month-old sheep. Localized enamel hypoplasia, potentially resulting from trauma or disruptions during enamel development, was noted in 1% of both age groups. Dental caries was identified in five 20-month-old ewes with permanent incisors. These findings provide a comprehensive overview of the range and prevalence of dental conditions in Merino sheep, including common wear patterns and rare anomalies. Documenting such conditions in sheep contributes valuable information to veterinary dentistry, highlighting the need for further research into incisor health in sheep
A comparative study of ruminal activity in Churra and Merino sheep offered alfalfa hay
8 pages, 4 tables, 2 figures.A study was carried out to compare the fermentation parameters and kinetics of digestion of a range of different foods in the rumen of two breeds of sheep (Churra and Merino). Ten mature sheep (five Churra and five Merino), each fitted with a rumen cannula, were used in this study. In situ rumen degradability of both dry matter (DM) and cell wall was greater in Churra than in Merino sheep, the breed differences being significant for most of the foods used in the study (P < 0.05). These differences were greater when the foods had a higher cell wall concentration and this could be related to differences in the ruminal environment However, when the foods were incubated with rumen fluid their in vitro organic matter (OM) degradability was similar in both breeds. Rumen pH was higher (P < 0.05) and ammonia concentrations were lower (P < 0.05) in Churra than in Merino sheep. Rumen volatile fatty acid concentrations tended to be higher in Merino than in Churra sheep, though differences were only significant just before feeding (P < 0.05). The ratio acetate : propionate was higher in the Churra than Merino breed before and 12 h after feeding (P < 0.05). Protozoa numbers in rumen liquid were similar for both genotypes. The greater degradation of forages in the rumen of Churra sheep is discussed in relation to the possible higher activity of fibre-degrading micro-organisms and the greater buffering capacity of the rumen contents against fermentation acids, which could result in more favourable conditions for the microbial degradation of foods in the rumen. The author wish to acknowledge the financial support received from the Comisión Interministerial de Ciencia y Tecnología of Spain (Project AGF94-0026)Peer reviewe
