No full textThe article offers a rereading of Horacio Quiroga’s work, particularly the one published in 1917 and 1926, in which the tension between languages and cultures present in the area of the triple frontier appears. The author points out the Quiroga’s interpellations in his writing from a paradox: “Quiroga narrates the Argentine border with Brazil and Paraguay; he tells in Spanish about the conflict of several languages (Spanish of Misiones, Portuguese, Guarani and even other indigenous languages such as Quechua), in the impure articulation of various cultures”. In development, Rocca provides elements to rethink the location of Quiroga’s literature and the tensions of the Argentine literary field, at the beginning of the 20th century, around a consecrated line of the national as the “gauchesca”.El artículo se propone una relectura de la obra de Horacio Quiroga, particularmente la publicada en 1917 y 1926, en la que se pone en escena la tensión entre lenguas y culturas presentes en la zona de la triple frontera. Habla de las interpelaciones que ejerce en su escritura a partir una paradoja: “Quiroga narra la frontera argentina en contacto con Brasil y Paraguay; narra en español sobre el conflicto de varias lenguas (el español misionero, el portugués, el guaraní y hasta otras lenguas indígenas como el quechua), en el impuro empalme de varias culturas”. Death and Madness in the Works of Edgar Allan Poe, Horacio Quiroga, and Alfonso Hernandez-Cat
No full textIn this dissertation, I analyze the representations of the theme of horror in the short stories of Edgar Allan Poe, Horacio Quiroga, and Alfonso Hernandez-Cat. In my research, I have also analyzed the representation of the themes of death and madness that are germane to the works of Edgar Allan Poe, Horacio Quiroga, and Alfonso Hern-ndez-Cat. My analysis of their works explores psychological horror, domestic horror, madness, and death, in the works of the aforementioned authors. This dissertation proceeds from the premise that the narratives of writers such as Alfonso Hernandez-Cat are obscure in the research foci but remain germane to the topic of study in the linkages that seem to exist between madness and death in literature
La modernidad céntrica de Horacio Quiroga
No full textThe following paper takes up the links between Horacio Quiroga and modernity, and between the Uruguayan writer and the avant-garde, previously indicated by critics. Thisreview aims to defend his cinematographic stories’ modernity but to deny its possible relationship with the avant-garde. To support our hypothesis, we ascribe to the notion of modernity as an awareness of contemporaneity, a discursiveness that projects one (or several) innovations contemporary to its author in the artistic field. «Novelty» understood, not in the avant-garde manner –rupture and negation of tradition–, but as any phenomenon that couldn’t have existed previously because the past’s conditions didn’t allow it. We’ll apply and analyze this concept of modernity in Quiroga’s following cinematographic texts: «Miss Dorothy Phillips, mi esposa», «El espectro», «El puritano», y «El vampiro».El estudio que sigue retoma las vinculaciones, señaladas anteriormente por la crítica, entre Horacio Quiroga y la modernidad, y entre el escritor uruguayo y la vanguardia. Esta revisión tiene como objetivo defender la modernidad de sus cuentos cinematográficos y desmentir su posible relación con la vanguardia. Para sostener nuestra hipótesis, nos adscribimos a la noción de modernidad como proyección de la contemporaneidad, una discursividad que manifiesta, en el terreno artístico, una (o varias) innovaciones coetáneas a la época de su autor. «Novedad» entendida, no a la manera de la vanguardia –ruptura y negación de la tradición–, sino como todo fenómeno que no podría haber existido anteriormente porque las condiciones del pasado no lo permitían. Aplicaremos y analizaremos dicho concepto de modernidad en los cuatro cuentos cinematográficos de Quiroga: «Miss Dorothy Phillips, mi esposa», «El espectro», «El puritano», y «El vampiro». El fin último es reubicar al escritor en el polisistema literario rioplatense, subrayando su espacio céntrico y no periférico en el mismo

Esta revisión tiene como objetivo defender la modernidad de sus cuentos cinematográficos y desmentir su posible relación con la vanguardia. Para sostener nuestra hipótesis, nos adscribimos a la noción de modernidad como proyección de la contemporaneidad, una discursividad que manifiesta, en el terreno artístico, una (o varias) innovaciones coetáneas a la época de su autor. «Novedad» entendida, no a la manera de la vanguardia –ruptura y negación de la tradición–, sino como todo fenómeno que no podría haber existido anteriormente porque las condiciones del pasado no lo permitían.
