Re-sounding images: sound and image in an audiovisual age

    No full text
This dissertation examines the evolving articulation of sound and image in contemporary culture, with particular reference to film. It argues that sound and image have undergone a historical machined separation, followed by a machined fusion or recombination. The machined fusion of sound and image has enabled the creation of soundful images, which are more than simply the sum of their parts. Through the infusion of sound, images are now routinely reinforced with a performed sense of presence, where they are made to sound more real, more powerful, more authentic. Through association with the image, sounds are reinforced to the extent of becoming 'realer than real'. By tracing the history of sound and image from their initial machined separation to their subsequent machined fusion, it will be argued that a new relationship has been created that has shaped an influential new mode of communication and perception

In general for a such equilibrium there is no theory for knowing when it bifurcates some small-amplitude limit cycles moving the parameters of the system. Here we study the zero-Hopf bifurcation using the averaging theory. We apply this theory to a Chua system depending on 6 parameters, but the way followed for studying the zero-Hopf bifurcation can be applied to any other di erential system in dimension 3 or higher. In this paper rst we show that there are three 4-parameter families of Chua systems exhibiting a zero-Hopf equilibrium. After, by using the averaging theory, we provide su cient conditions for the bifurcation of limit cycles from these families of zero-Hopf equilibria. From one family we can prove that 1 limit cycle bifurcates, and from the other two families we can prove that 1, 2 or 3 limit cycles bifurcate simultaneously

Chinese education in the novel by A. Chua Battle hymn of the tiger mother

    No full text
Chinese culture and tradition stand in direct opposition to American and European cultures. Chinese children must live according to the principles of metaconfucianism from an early age. Failure to do so threatens social ostracism. Amy Chua in her autobiographical novel Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother describes the education of her two daughters living in America according to the principles present in China. The educational methods used by Chua are considered controversial by western parents. The author made an attempt to explain the motives of Asian mothers.

Jess Chua was a leading scholar in the field of family business and a major contributor to Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice both as an author and editor. His significant contributions to the field were acknowledged by the Web of Science, which listed him among the world\u27s most highly cited researchers in Economics and Business in 2017, 2019, and 2020. In this memorial editorial, we pay tribute to him by discussing his influence on the field through his academic work, mentoring, long-term collaborations with other scholars, and the kindness he and his wife, Eva Kan, showed to his colleagues and students

Author response image 1. Correlation of phosphosites between biological replicates.

    No full text
Neurotransmitter release is mediated by the fast, calcium-triggered fusion of synaptic vesicles with the presynaptic plasma membrane, followed by endocytosis and recycling of the membrane of synaptic vesicles. While many of the proteins governing these processes are known, their regulation is only beginning to be understood. Here we have applied quantitative phosphoproteomics to identify changes in phosphorylation status of presynaptic proteins in resting and stimulated nerve terminals isolated from the brains of Wistar rats. Using rigorous quantification, we identified 252 phosphosites that are either up- or downregulated upon triggering calcium-dependent exocytosis. Particularly pronounced were regulated changes of phosphosites within protein constituents of the presynaptic active zone, including bassoon, piccolo, and RIM1. Additionally, we have mapped kinases and phosphatases that are activated upon stimulation. Overall, our study provides a snapshot of phosphorylation changes associated with presynaptic activity and provides a foundation for further functional analysis of key phosphosites involved in presynaptic plasticity

Numerical and statistical analyses of aerodynamic characteristics of low Reynolds number airfoils using Xfoil and JMP

    No full text
Low Reynolds number aerodynamics has become a promising topic of interest in various commercial utilizations such as wind turbines. Airfoils employed for this type of application usually experience performance degradation due to separation bubble formation. This study intends to investigate the behavior and effect of such phenomena and analyze the interrelationship among the contributive factors affecting its existence using JMP, a statistical analysis tool, with numerical data generated from Xfoil, a collective program applicable for low-speed airfoils. Numerical results were validated against published experimental data and exhibited favorable agreement more specifically within the upper limits of the given Reynolds number range. Surface pressure and skin friction drag coefficient plots show that the bubble length tends to decrease as angle of attack, Reynolds number and turbulence intensity are increased. The abridgement of the bubble extent due to enhancement of flow instabilities is associated with increase lift-to-drag ratio which is more pronounced in the attached flow regions. The statistical technique yielded predictive models for multiple outcome variables and it was learned that the main effects had more significant influence on the aerodynamic properties of airfoils and chordwise extent of separation bubble. © 2017 Author(s)
