Writing a Wikipedia Article on Cultural Competence in Health Care

    No full text
This article describes how librarians created a Wikipedia article on cultural competence in health care to support the medical school’s curriculum. Wikipedia, often considered not as reliable as scholarly articles, continues to be popular. Rutgers librarians conducted a Wikipedia project to improve its content to benefit students. The importance of cultural competency in health care is widely recognized due to increasingly diverse patient populations. Medical schools integrate cultural competency in curricula to train students to be culturally competent. Therefore, this topic was chosen for the Wikipedia Project. It is hoped that health sciences librarians and educators will benefit from their experience

International audienceAfter an overall presentation of the situation of Yu Hua’s work in France, we shall focus on the reception of his novel Xiongdi, which received an unprecedented media coverage. In less than one year, from the end of March 2008, when the book came out, to the end of January 2009, the book has been reviewed more than fifty times in newspapers, radio or television programs as well as Internet sites, either briefly, or at length, and sometimes along with an interview of the author. A critical success, which has resulted in the author winning the prestigious « prix Courrier international » (a prize awarded by the weekly journal Courrier International) and was coupled with a tremendous commercial success, the book gaining a large audience among the general readers but also, it must be stressed, among the economists, who acclaimed Yu Hua as « a vigilant scrutinizer of Chinese reality »

Waves in hyperbolic and double negative metamaterials including rogues and solitons

    No full text
The topics here deal with some current progress in electromagnetic wave propagation in a family of substances known as metamaterials. To begin with, it is discussed how a pulse can develop a leading edge that steepens and it is emphasised that such self-steepening is an important inclusion within a metamaterial environment together with Raman scattering and third-order dispersion whenever very short pulses are being investigated. It is emphasised that the self-steepening parameter is highly metamaterial-driven compared to Raman scattering, which is associated with a coefficient of the same form whether a normal positive phase, or a metamaterial waveguide is the vehicle for any soliton propagation. It is also shown that the influence of magnetooptics provides a beautiful and important control mechanism for metamaterial devices and that, in the future, this feature will have a significant impact upon the design of data control systems for optical computing. A major objective is fulfiled by the investigations of the fascinating properties of hyperbolic media that exhibit asymmetry of supported modes due to the tilt of optical axes. This is a topic that really merits elaboration because structural and optical asymmetry in optical components that end up manipulating electromagnetic waves is now the foundation of how to operate some of the most successful devices in photonics and electronics. It is pointed out, in this context, that graphene is one of the most famous plasmonic media with very low losses. It is a two-dimensional material that makes the implementation of an effective-medium approximation more feasible. Nonlinear non-stationary diffraction in active planar anisotropic hyperbolic metamaterials is discussed in detail and two approaches are compared. One of them is based on the averaging over a unit cell, while the other one does not include sort of averaging. The formation and propagation of optical spatial solitons in hyperbolic metamaterials is also considered with a model of the response of hyperbolic metamaterials in terms of the homogenisation ('effective medium') approach. The model has a macroscopic dielectric tensor encompassing at least one negative eigenvalue. It is shown that light propagating in the presence of hyperbolic dispersion undergoes negative (anomalous) diffraction. The theory is ten broadened out to include the influence of the orientation of the optical axis with respect to the propagation wave vector. Optical rogue waves are discussed in terms of how they are influenced, but not suppressed, by a metamaterial background. It is strongly discussed that metamaterials and optical rogue waves have both been making headlines in recent years and that they are, separately, large areas of research to study. A brief background of the inevitable linkage of them is considered and important new possibilities are discussed. After this background is revealed some new rogue wave configurations combining the two areas are presented alongside a discussion of the way forward for the future

The Dunhuang Manuscript Version of a Synopsis of the Yu zhu jinggang bore jing xuan yan and Its Author

110009359848The present paper investigates a synoptic text, surviving only in Dunhuang manuscript fragments (Stein Nos 8044, 8166, and 9723 衾all part of the same scroll), dealing with the Yu zhu jingang bore jing xuan yan御註金剛般若經宣演, the work of Daoyin 道氤(668-740), a scholar-monk active during the Kaiyuan開元era. My examination of the content and form of the extant fragments leads me to conclude that this must be a synopsis compiled on the basis of the Jingang ying, a commentary to the Yu zhu jingang bore jing xuan yan. We know from Yitianʼs 義天Xin bian zhu zong jiao zang zong lu 新編諸宗教藏總録that a synoptic text called Yu zhu jingang bore jing xuan yan ke 御註金剛般若經宣演科, in two scrolls, was composed by Quanming 詮明, a scholar-monk who lived under the Liao 遼Dynasty. The text, however, has not been indentified so far. My investigation raises the possibility that the author of the above Dunhuang manuscript fragments might be no other than Quanming. These materials thus become very important sources not only for our understanding of the influence exerted by the Yu zhu jingang bore jing xuan yan ke and the Jingang ying on later Chinese Buddhism but also for the study of Quanmingʼs work and thought.departmental bulletin pape

«Time with Dislocated Joints» (on Literary Ideologemes in Yu. Polyakov's Prose)

    No full text
The principles and means for embodiment the writer's idea to outline ideology of the epoch in the literary text are the subject of research. Recognizing the need to combine the literary and linguistic analysis of the literary prose, the author of article analyzes language forms from the point of view of the peculiarities of conveying the ideological content by them. Ideologemes in the well-known modern writer Yu. Polyakov's prose are considered to be “the minimized meanings”, markers, reference points by which the reader can form an opinion on the “spirit of the age”, described in works, and at the same time understand the writer's sarcastic interpretation of the events of the epoch. The author focuses on the means like the way of semantic actualization, the repetition of negative pronouns and particles, filling the text with abbreviations. It is emphasized that abbreviations in the novels by Yu. Polyakov have not only the nominative function, but expose an essence of dominating ideology, express a condition of inspirituality. According to the author, the abbreviation process is revealed in the novels as a morbid speech mutation caused by the epoch. The peculiarities of Yu. Polyakov's image of the epoch ideological component are compared with typical methods and features of the literary narration which are found in the works by V. Dyogtev, V. Shukshin, M. Saltykov-SchedrinПредметом исследования являются принципы и средства воплощения замысла писателя, поставившего перед собой задачу очертить идеологию эпохи в художественном тексте.

YU YU HAKUSHO FIRST EPISODE: A semiotic narrative analysis

    No full text
This paper aims to analyze the meanings and feelings represented by semiotic elements available in the first episode of the anime Yu Yu Hakusho. The theoretical approach adopted is the Semiotic Cultural Psychology (SCP) in which considers human beings as meaning makers in the world through the mediation of signs. In this paper we consider signs from the Peirce perspective as the representation of objects in the real world and divided into symbols, indexes and icons. From SCP we considered how these signs can represent mediation by pleromatization and schematization in order to understand meanings and feelings represented by field-like signs and point-like signs. In the excerpt from this article, we selected the first episode of the anime Yu Yu Hakusho to understand how meanings and feelings are regulated through existing complexes of signs during the narrative. To achieve this, we cataloged the main semiotic elements of the episode, classifying them as point-like signs or field-like signs. Subsequently, we analyzed which of these signs were part of a semiotic hybrid complex (pleromatization/field-like signs/hyper-generalization) regulating feelings related to the narrative and which expressed constructed and shared meanings (schematization/point-like signs/generalization). In the results, we found that semiotic elements can be considered as narrative devices to involve the viewer in the story based on the intentionality of the author. In the Yu Yu Hakusho first episode, the intentionality is based in the presentation of the character Yusuke and the creation of feelings related to him. In this sense, in order to present who Yusuke is, point-like signs were identified representing some characteristic about him. In the second part of the episode, there was a predominance of field-like signs in order to create some feelings about Yusuke based on the empathy constructed in the first part of the narrative. Then, as related in the literature, mediations by schematization and pleromatization acted all the time in order to relate cognitive elements (meanings constructed about Yusuke) and effective elements (feelings to be felt for Yusuke)
