Brand Aslam: Contesting Nadeem Aslam as Pakistani Anglophonic Voice
No full textThis article explores how the literary texts have been influenced by the writer’s promotion as an author with the knowledge and authority to represent Pakistan. We discuss how “Brand Aslam” draws on and amplifies elements of “Brand Pakistan” to secure the authority of Aslam’s representations of the nation he left as a teenager. We are particularly interested in how the branding of Aslam in terms of his national identity (here, Pakistan), especially due to his active involvement in creation of his image, influences commodity value of his work(s) in the global literary market. We conclude that the “real-life” stories of him as a literary celebrity become the objects of special fascination and determine the reception of his works as a postcolonial author from margins

Engaging Schooling Subjectivities Across Post-apartheid Urban Spaces
No full textAslam Fataar, one of South Africa’s few educational sociologists working with ethnographic methods, captures the complex interactions and dynamics between social life, school processes and youth subjectivity in townships in the Western Cape. His work with concepts of mobilities and space is enormously generative, providing a way for teachers, principals, communities and policy makers to engage with the ‘complex ecologies’ of young people’s learning in urban schools. As an astute policy analyst, he also well knows the systemic barriers in the way of achieving this. The last chapter, on possibilities for pedagogical justice at the site of the school, considers how disengaged students might re-engage through leveraging explicit pedagogic connections between their lifeworlds and school practices. Acknowledging that pedagogy cannot be the only means for revitalising schooling, the author nevertheless insists that marginalised young people’s consent needs to be won by schools that make use of, rather than ignore, their strengths, knowledges and aspirations. The approach to the troubled question of youth and subjectivity is enlightening, and vital to understanding the post-apartheid city and school. The book fills a much-needed gap in educational sociology in South Africa
A Pragma-Stylistic Analysis of the Blind Man’s Garden by Nadeem Aslam
No full textThis paper aims at describing Pragma-stylistic Analysis used in the Novel “Blind Man’s Garden” published in 2013 by British Pakistani author Nadeem Aslam. The study is intended to investigate the role of speech act theory (SAT) in understanding dramatic texts through using pragma-stylistic approach. It is also an attempt to examine the pragma-stylistic effects of using speech acts (SAs) and their implication in conveying the theme of the play and the intentions of the characters. The researcher explores the application of speech act theory proposed by J.L. Austin and John Searle. This study was conducted using textual analysis and descriptive qualitative method. Based on the data analysis the eight extracts are selected from Nadeem’s novel and they are Locutionary, Perlocutionary, Illocutionary, Representatives, Declaratives, Commissive, Expressive and Directives. The analysis reveals that the interaction between stylistics and pragmatics is a vital tool for analyzing dramatic texts in terms of (SAT). SAs are grouped into systematic combination depending on the purpose of the speaker or the play wright. By using Pragma-stylistic Analysis the writer able to catch reader’s attention to focus on the content of the novel.

An attribute control chart for a Weibull distribution under accelerated hybrid censoring
No full textIn this article, an attribute control chart has been proposed using the accelerated hybrid censoring logic for the monitoring of defective items whose life follows a Weibull distribution. The product can be tested by introducing the acceleration factor based on different pressurized conditions such as stress, load, strain, temperature, etc. The control limits are derived based on the binomial distribution, but the fraction defective is expressed only through the shape parameter, the acceleration factor and the test duration constant. Tables of the average run lengths have been generated for different process parameters to assess the performance of the proposed control chart. Simulation studies have been performed for the practical use, where the proposed chart is compared with the Shewhart np chart for demonstration of the detection power of a process shift. ? 2017 Aslam et al. O; Arapların tutkulu âşıkları, onların haberleri, şiirleri ve nükteli hikayeleri hakkında keleme alınmış bir kitaptır. Araştırma planı, iki kısım içermektedir: inceleme kısmı ve tahkik kısmı. Birinci kısım: O, inceleme kısmı olup iki bölüm içermektedir: Birinci bölümde müellif: onun ismi, künyesi, doğumu, vefatı, yaşadığı çağ, şeyh ve hocaları ile eserlerinden bahsettim. Sonra ikinci bölümde kitabı tanıttım; onun yöntemini, esere yöneltilen övgü ve yergileri açıkladım; kitabın nüshalarını tanımladım ve ondan art arda çeşitli kesitler sundum. İkinci Kısım: Tahkik kısmıdır. Bu araştırma, yazma eserden alınan 13 (on üç ) bâb üzerine kurulmuştur. Bu bâblar, bâbların başlıkları ile ilişkili tali bölümler ihtiva etmektedir. O gerçekten tahkik edilmeye, gün yüzüne çıkarılmaya, ondan istifade etmeleri için dil ve edebiyat öğrencilerine sunulmaya ve kütüphanelerimize katılmaya layık bir eserdir.The research studies and investigates the book: (Market Prices in the Poetry of Longing - AsaarAlaswaq fi Ashaar Alashwaq), by Abu Al-Yaman Al-Samannoudi. It is a book about the literature of lovers and night entertainment with women, their news, their poetry, and anecdotes of their stories. The research plan includes two parts: Study Department and Investigation Department. Section one: which is the study section. It includes two sections: In the first section, I discussed the author's life: his name, surname, birth, death, era, his sheikhs, and his works. Then, in the second section, I introduced the book and explained Abu al-Yaman's approach of selection, his approach of weighting, the merits of the book and criticismagainst it, and I described the copies of the manuscript, and I attached at the end of this section photo examples of the copies. Section two: The Investigation Section The research was limited to fourteen chapters, with the chapters containing sub-chapters, linked to the titles of their chapters. The study focused on the last section of the book, from page 117 to page 174. I copied the text, wrote it according to modern spelling rules, extracted its evidence, attributed obscure and ambiguous ones by referring to the appropriate sources, and attributed the sayings to their authors through referring to their sources in the old books. I also extracted verses of God Almighty from the Holy Qur'an, and noble hadiths from hadith books, and explained the anomalous vocabulary with the help of language dictionaries. I edited the manuscript with a scientific approach, and made literary honesty a beacon for me, so that the book would come out in its best form. The studywas concluded with the most prominent findings and recommendations of the research, which presented a cherished translation of an unknown author and revealed a rare literary book. The study emphasized interest in the book and its evidence, and interest in investigating our Arab heritage. The study was accompanied by a list of sources, references, and necessary technical indexes
