Bach

Simone de Beauvoir and the Colonial Experience: Freedom, Violence, and Identity

    No full text
Simone de Beauvoir and the Colonial Experience: Freedom, Violence, and Identity interprets the philosophy of Simone de Beauvoir and her intellectual trajectory through the perspective of French colonial history. Nathalie Nya considers Beauvoir through this lens not only to critique her position as a colonizer woman or colon, but also as a means of situating her in one of France’s most vexing and fraught historical moments. This terminology emphasizes the weight of French colonialism on Beauvoir’s identity as a white French woman, as well as the subjective and interpersonal dialectic of colonialism. Nya argues that while the French republic was systematizing colonialism, all of its white citizens were colons whereas natives from France’s colonies were the colonized.Simone de Beauvoir and the Colonial Experience presents a gendered and female perspective of French colonialism between 1946 and 1962, a time when French intellectuals such as Jean-Paul Sartre and Franz Fanon rallied against the political system, and which ultimately brought about an end to French colonialism. It adheres to a reading of Beauvoir as foremost an intellectual woman, one who reflected upon the legacy of French colonialism as an author and whose nation-bound status as a colonizer played a role in the alliance she created with Gisele Halimi and Djamila Boupacha. Beauvoir’s colonial reflections can help us to better gauge how women—White, Asian, Arab, Caribbean, Latina, mixed race, and Black—decipher the crimes and injustices of French colonialism

    Fanon and Mayotte Capécia

The objective of this paper is to first present Fanon‘s assessment of Mayotte Capécia‘s writing and then analyze the content of Capécia‘s writing from the novelist‘s own perspective. I argue that, within oppressive colonial situations, the oppressed can self-narrate a coherent sense of identity that substantially reflects their personal situation. The race narratives of the heroines, Isaure and Mayotte, are questioned by the characters within the novels and then by the author‘s contemporaries. As a result, Capécia‘s contemporaries, such as Fanon and Leonard Sainville, question the racial and ethnic authenticity of Capécia herself. With the attempt to blur the line between the author and her characters, Fanon suggests that because of the heroines‘ own ambivalence to their racial/social condition, these women, the author included, cannot self-define. What Fanon finds racially ambivalent within the social condition of the heroines are the relationships the women have with men. Because of this, the heroines and the author lose racial credit in Fanon‘s eyes. In this paper, I seek to examine how particular social contexts signify personal identities that are perpetually called into question. Finally, since my paper is situated within the colonial context of Martinique, my thesis will give examples of how an oppressed person gains agency in a male-dominated colonial society

Sartre and Fanon: On Men and Women, and Gender and Race Intersection as They Relate to French Colonial Resistance

    No full text
In this paper, the author presents Fanon’s analysis of decolonization in order to present an explicit conception of resistance based upon Fanon’s concept of decolonization, which is aligned with the lived experience of the colonized: their racial, sociopolitical, and economic condition as well as their existential condition.  The author contrasts Fanon’s analysis with Sartre’s critique of colonialism as it appears in The Critique. Ultimately, through the presentation of Sartre’s and Fanon’s theories, the author attempts to show a feminist analysis of French colonial resistance as a criticism of Sartre’s and Fanon’s theories and of the analysis their male contemporaries within the field of Post/Colonial Theories

This thesis discuss the matter of non-profit-making associations as a self regulatory technique out of a theoretical concept of power. The object for the study is the non-profit-making association Ditt Nya Hageby, which work in the neigborhood of Hageby, a suburb to Norrköping. In the study the association is placed in a contemporary postmodern social context and analyzed through semi- structured qualitative interviews, accordingly to hermeneutical method, with five active members of the association as informants. The association consists of members who lives in the neighborhood. Together with a hired organizer they realizes their own ideas in to projects which unquestionably improves the social and physical enviroment in Hageby. The author of this thesis, however argues their activities also can be looked at in a normative way concerning social order in a non-compelling sence. Thus the author means that the association, in this particular sense, could be understood theoretically by implying Michel Foucaults govermentality concept. In order to reach the final conclusion the informants experience concerning sense of community and identity in relation to Ditt Nya Hageby is analyzed. Further theoretical framework is provided by Ferdinand Tönnies concepts of gemeinschaft/gesellschaft and Jürgen Habermas civil publicity. The paper also accounts for what the authorbelieves to be the ideological/methodological basis for Ditt Nya Hageby’s activities by presenting and discussing the"from the inside out"-perspective which is recomended by John P. Kretzman&John.L McKnight regarding the reconstruction, in a wider sense, of exposed neigborhoods

Ngaa-bi-nya Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander program evaluation framework

    Get PDF
© The Author(s) 2018. The Ngaa-bi-nya framework presented here is a practical guide for the evaluation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and social programs. It has a range of prompts to stimulate thinking about critical success factors in programs relevant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s lives. Ngaa-bi-nya was designed from an Aboriginal practitioner-scholar standpoint and was informed by the holistic concept of Aboriginal health, case studies with Aboriginal-led social and emotional well-being programs, human rights instruments, and the work of Stufflebeam. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and social programs have been described as suffering from a lack of evaluation. Ngaa-bi-nya is one of the few tools developed specifically to reflect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ contexts. It prompts the user to take into account the historical, policy, and social landscape of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s lives, existing and emerging cultural leadership, and informal caregiving that supports programs. Ngaa-bi-nya’s prompts across four domains—landscape factors, resources, ways of working, and learnings—provide a structure through which to generate insights necessary for the future development of culturally relevant, effective, translatable, and sustainable programs required for Australia’s growing and diverse Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations

In the fall of 1938, Mr. William Shell, state director of the Negro division of the National Youth Administration in Georgia, in the role of guest speaker, delivered an address to a class in Public Welfare Administration at the Atlanta University School of Social Work. He spoke on the National Youth Administration in Georgia for Negroes. Stimulated by a desire to learn to what extent the National Youth Administration Program was fulfilling its main objectives in the NYA Work Projects set up for Negroes in Atlanta, the author chose as a subject for a thesis, "The National Youth Administration Work Projects for Negroes in Fulton County, Georgia." Work Projects were those projects operated by NYA through which youths between the ages of eighteen and twenty-four who were out-of-school were compensated for activities in which they were engaged. This study would include all the Negro NYA Work Projects in Atlanta and Fulton County. To make such a study it was necessary to visit and to observe the projects while they were in operation and through these means be able to ascertain whether or not they were fulfilling their objectives
