Improved fisheries productivity and management in tropical reservoirs
The objective of the project was to contribute to the current research on reservoirs enhancement fisheries in tropical countries through the implementation of a series of action-research activities implemented in two small reservoirs in the Indo-Gangetic basin in India, and two very large reservoirs in Africa, the Lake Nasser (Egypt), and the Volta Lake (Ghana). Socio-institutional analyses were also conducted in these reservoirs to improve our knowledge regarding some of the main social processes that influence reservoir productivity. Overall the results of the project stress that while the natural biophysical constraints of the reservoirs are important in defining the ecological production processes, it is the socio-economic settings characterizing the community/societies around the reservoirs that eventually shape the human production enhancement possibilities.Reservoir fisheries, Inland fisheries, Sociological aspects, Socioeconomic aspects, Africa, Nasser L., Ghana, Volta L.,

Factors affecting seasonal patterns in epilimnion zooplankton community in one of the largest man-made lakes in Africa (Lake Nasser, Egypt)
AbstractThe objective of the study was to determine which factors regulate zooplankton organisms along Lake Nasser. Temperature, pH, DO, conductivity, turbidity, nutrients, and zooplankton abundance were measured. Twenty-three species of zooplankton were recorded in Lake Nasser included in Copepoda, Cladocera and Rotifera. Copepoda represented the main bulk of the community. The lowest standing stock of zooplankton was noticed during spring due to the highest fish predation during this season associated with the lowest turbidity. Big difference in temperature in Lake Nasser along the year round is considered as a controlling factor related to range of tolerance of species. The oscillation of the lake water level and the different factors affect the standing stock of zooplankton in the lake. Thus, continuous monitoring of Lake Nasser biota should be undertaken to follow the changes in the ecosystem
Novel Near-Field Microwave Testing Method for Outdoor Insulators
A Master of Science thesis in Electrical Engineering submitted by Yasser Adel Saker entitled, "Novel Near-Field Microwave Testing Method for Outdoor Insulators," June 2011. Available are both soft and hard copies of the thesis.Outdoor insulators are very vital in providing energized overhead lines mechanical support and electrical insulation from grounded structures. Insulators can be divided according to the material they are made of into glass, porcelain and polymer (Non Ceramic) insulators. After the 1970's, Non Ceramic Insulators (NCI) became very popular because of their ease of manufacturing, good contamination performance (due to hydrophopecity) and low installation cost. When manufactured or stored, insulators may be subjected to defects such as air voids, cracks in the fiberglass reinforced polymer (FRP) rod and contamination inclusion in the silicone rubber matrix. So, testing the insulator before the installation process and ensuring that it is defect free is very important to provide safety for workers and to avoid power outages. Unlike porcelain and glass insulators, it is hard to detect defects in NCI due to the absence of intermediate electrodes and the close distance between the sheds. In a previous study, a new technique was proposed that depends on near-field Microwave non destructive testing (NDT) using open ended rectangular waveguide sensor. In this technique, the NCI was considered as a multi layer structure where any defect in these layers will affect the reflection coefficient value measured by the sensor. The microwave NDT technique showed good potential in detecting different types of defects in the NCI. One of the short coming of the previous work is the lack of the ability of the system in identifying the type of defect inside the NCI sample. In this work, different defects in both silicone rubber and fibre glass core were detected. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) were applied in order to detect and specify the type of defect in the outdoor insulator. Moreover, stepwise regression was used in extracting the important features, where the features inspected in this study are Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) components, statistical features, and the details energy of the wavelet decomposition. The detection rate of defects in the silicone rubber layer was found to be 92.5%. Moreover, the type of defect in the silicone rubber matrix was successfully specified (air void or metal) where a classification rate of 95% was reached. Tools from statistical physics for systems biology and for genomics
My graduate studies involved three broad classes of problems, each of which are presented in different chapters of this thesis. The first two parts of my work were related to studying dynamics of biochemical networks. I studied a mean-field/stochastic model of epigenetic chromatin silencing in yeast. The model gives rise to different dynamical behaviors possible within the same molecular model and provides qualitative predictions that are being investigated experimentally. In another part of my work, I studied a model of segment polarity network in Drosophila and analyzed the parameter space of the system. I particularly studied the relation between the geometry of parameter space and the robustness of the network. I will show that, in addition to the volume, the geometry of this region has important consequences for the robustness and the fragility of a network. A major part of my PhD work involved applications of high-throughput sequencing technologies for extracting information at the genomic level. I present SOPRA, a new algorithm for exploiting the mate pair information for assembly of short reads. I have successfully applied SOPRA to real data and were able to assemble scaffolds of significant length with very few errors introduced in the process.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesIncludes vitaby Adel Dayaria
The impact of structural adjustment on trade unions in Egypt
The following research focuses on trade union organisations, and in particular trade union officialdom in Egypt. The study examines the extent to which trade union officials at the various levels of the trade union hierarchy are reacting to reforms instigated by structural adjustment policies. The adoption of structural adjustment and economic reform measures as proposed by the World Bank and IMF have resulted in the government's withdrawal of some of the benefits and privileges it accorded to workers. Public sector workers are particularly affected by these changes, thereby posing a challenge to trade union officialdom, since the bulk of trade union membership is within the public sector. Trade union officials are reacting to the reform measures by trying to balance their role as representatives of workers' interests and their role in administering state policy. Whereas in the past these two roles were reconcilable, however, with liberalisation of the economy and the adoption of structural adjustment measures that is no longer tenable. Trade unionism has been weakened by the incorporation of union officials within government corporate structures, making it more difficult for trade union officialdom to challenge the reform measures adopted by the government. Rather, trade union officials are opting for `co-operation' both with the government and with management in enterprises, to the cost of workers. In enterprises, trade union officials emphasise that the interests of work and workers are inseparable. At the level of the confederation and general unions, union officials present themselves as working to keep workers' rights, but also as partners with the government in its drive for growth. By so doing trade union officials are de-politicising trade unionism, and instead focus on economic gains. Union officials are redefining their role away from workers. Trade union action at the various levels is not based on what workers want or demand, but rather on what trade union officials want, in the belief that workers do not truly know their interests. As a result, trade union action has promoted the interests of union officials rather than that of the workers. Trade unionism has become in a sense a shell without a content. However, there is evidence that there are pressures to democratise trade unionism and make it more responsive to worker demands. These pressures are from within the worker base, from trade union officials particularly at the enterprise level who are affilited to political parties, and from external forces like the Islamists. However these forces have their limitations, particularly in the face of institutionalised sectors that are capable of reproducing themselves and promoting their interests
Data-driven design of fault diagnosis systems: nonlinear multimode processes
In many industrial applications early detection and diagnosis of abnormal behavior of the plant is of great importance. During the last decades, the complexity of process plants has been drastically increased, which imposes great challenges in development of model-based monitoring approaches and it sometimes becomes unrealistic for modern large-scale processes. The main objective of Adel Haghani Abandan Sari is to study efficient fault diagnosis techniques for complex industrial systems using process historical data and considering the nonlinear behavior of the process. To this end, different methods are presented to solve the fault diagnosis problem based on the overall behavior of the process and its dynamics. Moreover, a novel technique is proposed for fault isolation and determination of the root-cause of the faults in the system, based on the fault impacts on the process measurements.
