Road accident analysis in Yemen : the identification of shortcomings in road accident data, data adjustment, cost and development of road fatality model

No full text
The true extent of the road accident problem in Yemen is questionable. Some agencies and citizens believe that the safety situation in Yemen is very critical while others disagree with this belief. Both sides however, agree that the road accident problem in Yemen is such that it requires considerable attention. Since Yemen has no history in road safety research and since there is no reliable road accident data in the country, making final judgements on the situation is difficult unless supported by adequate research. The aim of the present research is to provide a better understanding of the road accident problem in the Yemen. This can be made by investigation of the real dimensions of the road accident problem. This includes the identification of the shortcomings in road accident data, the cost of road accidents and modelling road accident fatalities

SHORTCOMINGS IN ROAD ACCIDENT DATA IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES, IDENTIFICATION AND CORRECTION: A CASE STUDY

No full text
This paper reports on some aspects of the findings of a recent piece of research into road traffic accidents in Yemen. The aim of the research was to provide a better understanding of road accident problems in Yemen by investigating its real dimensions. This includes the identification of the shortcomings in road accident data and to develop a method that can be adopted to adjust (correct) the official data. Two field surveys were employed to check the shortcomings in the official records. The main findings obtained are presented as follows: •The actual size of the road accident problem in Yemen is much greater than it appears in the official figures. In 1993, the registered accidents accounted for only about 13.3% of the estimated accidents and injuries accounted for only about 30% of the estimated injuries.•The registered fatalities account for only about 48% of the actual number of fatalities using the 30 days definition. The 30 days definition for road accident fatalities is not adopted in Yemen and the relevant agencies are not implementing this definition properly.•Methods for adjusting road accident data were adopted in this study. It is believed that this method can adjust the road accident data with an acceptable degree of satisfaction. It is hoped that the findings of this research will help both researchers in their future work and decision makers in the field of road safety to encourage suitable safety programmes to be adopted which are consistent with the actual size of the problem. Knowledge of the true picture of the road accident problem will be useful for the purpose of negotiating adequate funding for road safety activities.Estimating the actual percentage of unreported data in road accidents and casualties is very useful for any further research in road accidents and safety in Yemen. It will also help in dealing with official data and results from previous studies

Novel CO2 Separation Membranes

No full text
Using membranes for CO2 capture has gained recent prominence in the global scientific community due to its lower capital cost and a quicker separation performance than the conventional separation methods. The membrane process features desirable properties, like compactness, energy efficiency, and environmental friendliness. Various polymeric and inorganic materials have been tested both as unique ingredients and blends to form CO2 separation membranes with a focus on increasing the performance but have had varying rates of success. For commercial viability, the membrane sector requires new techniques and testing materials to lower the cost of CO2 capture. Recently, thermally rearranged polymers, intrinsic microporous polymers, ionic liquid inclusion as fillers, and binary fillers have all emerged as novel trends, focusing on enhancing the working efficiency and sustainability of the membranes. This chapter explores the most recent advances in membrane technology and its future prospects as a sustainable solu ion towards carbon dioxide capture. A modified Leslie-Gower predator-prey model with a Beddington-DeAngelis functional response is proposed and studied. The purpose is to examine the effects of fear and quadratic fixed effort harvesting on the system's dynamic behavior. The model's qualitative properties, such as local equilibria stability, permanence, and global stability, are examined. The analysis of local bifurcation has been studied. It is discovered that the system experiences a saddle-node bifurcation at the survival equilibrium point whereas a transcritical bifurcation occurs at the boundary equilibrium point. Additionally established are the prerequisites for Hopf bifurcation existence. Finally, using MATLAB, a numerical investigation is conducted to verify the validity of the theoretical analysis and visualize the model dynamics.

Modeling and Analysis of the Influence of Fear on the Harvested Modified Leslie–Gower Model Involving Nonlinear Prey Refuge

Understanding the effects of fear, quadratic fixed effort harvesting, and predator-dependent refuge are essential topics in ecology. Accordingly, a modified Leslie–Gower prey–predator model incorporating these biological factors is mathematically modeled using the Beddington–DeAngelis type of functional response to describe the predation processes. The model’s qualitative features are investigated, including local equilibria stability, permanence, and global stability. Bifurcation analysis is carried out on the temporal model to identify local bifurcations such as transcritical, saddle-node, and Hopf bifurcation. A comprehensive numerical inquiry is carried out using MATLAB to verify the obtained theoretical findings and understand the effects of varying the system’s parameters on their dynamical behavior. It is observed that the existence of these factors makes the system’s dynamic behavior richer, so that it involves bi-stable behavior

Molecular testing approaches in thyroid cancer diagnosis

No full text
Thyroid cancer (TC) is the most common endocrine malignancy worldwide, with an annual incidence of around 300,000 cases. In recent decades, the incidence of TC in many countries, including Saudi Arabia, has increased significantly. Genomics has allowed multiple mutations to be examined simultaneously across multiple genes, providing a detailed genomic profile for a given tumor. It is understood from a molecular perspective that different signaling pathways may have genetic abnormalities as the primary factors in thyroid tumorigenesis. While there is still early progress in the usage and standardization of targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) in TC, a major ongoing study to distinguish malignant from benign thyroid nodules from fine-needle aspiration (FNA) has shown promising results that can prevent unnecessary surgery, based on NGS analyses of mutations and gene fusions associated with most TC. The differential diagnosis and malignancy risk stratification of TC require multidisciplinary skills and experience of both ultrasound and the FNA and molecular analysis. The most common TC mutations are point mutations in the BRAF and the chromosome rearrangements of RET/papillary TCs. The transition mechanisms tend to be linked to specific etiological features, which are very crucial while deciding the treatment protocol. On the other hand, FNA cytology has an intrinsic drawback. The findings of infinite cytology cannot differentiate some types of TC, such as follicular adenomas, thyroid follicular carcinomas, or papillary thyroid follicular. Nevertheless, accumulating evidence indicates that molecular diagnostic approaches can overcome these limitations. In this review, we present an updated summary, which focuses primarily on molecular alterations in the tumorigenesis and biomarker investigations of TC. [JBCGenetics 2020; 3(2.000): 77-83

In this paper, the effect of wear in the fluid film journal bearings on the dynamic behavior of rotor bearing system has been studied depending on the analytical driven of dynamic stiffness and damping coefficients of worn journal bearing. The finite element method was used to modeling rotor bearing system. The unbalance response, critical speed and natural frequency of rotor bearing system have been studied to determine the changes in these parameters due to wear. MATLAB software was used to find the analytical values of dynamic coefficients of journal bearing. The results of rotor mounted on fluid film journal bearings showed that the wear in journal bearing increases the amplitude of unbalance response and decrease critical speed, stability and the natural frequencies
