Sixty Years of Community: St. Olaf Catholic Parish in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, 1952-2012
This paper will explore how the parish community of St. Olaf in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, established in 1952, reflects the Roman Catholic Church, specifically at the local, state, and national levels in the United States. It will also discuss the various changes that have occurred in the past 60 years of its history in terms of the various locations of worship for the members, the growth of the community outreach programs, and the effects of the Second Vatican Council. This ecumenical council was a meeting of Catholic bishops from around the whole that brought reform to the Catholic Church and affected the relationship of the Catholic Church to the world. The parish at St. Olaf has grown from having only 125 families in 1952 to over 1,000 families in 2012
Search for the Standard Model Higgs boson in association with top quarks and decaying to at TeV using the ATLAS detector
A search for a Higgs boson produced in association with a pair of top quarks and decaying into apair of b quarks is presented. The analysis uses an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb−1 of pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of = 7 TeV collected in 2011 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The search is focused on the semileptonic decay of the tbar t system and combines nine different topologies given by the jet and b-tagged jet multiplicities of the event. A kinematic reconstruction of the Higgs boson mass is performed in the signal enhanced region, which becomes the primary discriminant variable between signal and background. Background-dominated samples are exploited to constrain the leading systematic uncertainties affecting the background prediction. No significant excess of events above the background expectation is observed. For a Higgs boson with a mass of 125 GeV, an observed (expected) 95% confidence upper limit of 13.1 (10.5) times the Standard Model cross section is obtained
Northern Rover: The Life Story of Olaf Hanson
From 1919 to 1970, Olaf Hanson was a trapper, fur trader, prospector, game guardian, fisherman, and road blasting expert in northeastern Saskatchewan. He told his life story to popular Saskatchewan author A. L. Karras, who wrote this historical memoir in the 1980s. In an uncompromising, straightforward style, Karras and Hanson reveal the geography, wildlife, natural history of the region as well as the business and social interactions between people. Their book offers a look at the vanished subsistence and commercial economy of the boreal forest, wound around a fascinating personal story of courage and physical stamina

A likelihood-based reconstruction algorithm for top-quark pairs and the KLFitter framework
A likelihood-based reconstruction algorithm for arbitrary event topologies is introduced and, as an example, applied to the single-lepton decay mode of top-quark pair production. The algorithm comes with several options which further improve its performance, in particular the reconstruction efficiency, i.e., the fraction of events for which the observed jets and leptons can be correctly associated with the final state particles of the corresponding event topology. The performance is compared to that of well-established reconstruction algorithms using a common framework for kinematic fitting. This framework has a modular structure which describes the physics processes and detector models independently. The implemented algorithms are generic and can easily be ported from one experiment to another. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserve

Searches for new physics in events with top-quark pairs in ATLAS
Many theories beyond the Standard Model (SM) predict new heavy particles that would preferably couple to top quarks. In several direct searches it is assumed that these particle decay via the production of a pair of top quarks. This results either in manifold signatures with top-quark pairs or in a resonant distribution of the invariant mass of the top quark-pair. In indirect searches it is assumed that SM processes might be affected by massive new particles, such as the enhancement of the rare SM process of four-top-quark production. The results from latest searches, performed by the ATLAS Collaboration with 13 TeV data, for vector-like-quark pair-production, for resonances that decay to a top-quark pair and for four-top-quark production are presented
Analysing the performance of the OLAF framework in the context of identifying music in movies
This paper presents the findings of a benchmark performed on the audio fingerprinting framework OLAF in the context of movie music. The goal is to find a music identification framework suitable for automatically identifying a song from a movie clip. This research aims to find how well OLAF performs in this context with regard to the criteria determined in the benchmark and to see if the performance can be increased. The OLAF framework makes use of parameters, which are individually tweaked and benchmarked with synthesised data. These findings are then combined to find a set of parameters that is used to perform this same benchmark on real clips from movies. The found parameter setup slightly increased the performance, going from 1 true positive and 133 false negatives in the original setup to 5 true positives, 3 false positives and 126 false negatives.CSE3000 Research ProjectComputer Science and Engineerin
Erwin Olaf is an author dedicated to photography, videos and advertising. The Matrix Element Method and Vector-Like Quark Searches
In my time at the CERN summer student program, I worked on applying the matrix element method to vector-like quark identification. I worked in the ATLAS University of Geneva group under Dr. Olaf Nackenhorst. I developed automated plotting tools with ROOT, a script for implementing and optimizing generated matrix element calculation code, and kinematic transforms for the matrix element method
