Skygate in Beirut by Nabil Gholam Architects

Measurement of X-ray-induced DNA double-strand breaks at various stages of the cell cycle using the total fluorescence as a comet assay parameter

    No full text
The aim of the study was to develop a protocol for both estimating cell cycle position and the level of ionizing radiation-induced DNA dsb using the neutral comet assay. Using DNA histograms, cell cycle positions were determined for human dermal fibroblasts. The tail intensity was used to estimate the level of DNA damage induced by X-rays, at different positions of the cell cycle. The results of tail intensity versus DNA content bivariate analysis of exponentially growing cells showed a remarkable decrease in tail intensity with transition of cells from G1 to S-phase and increases slightly with transition to G2/M phase. This effect is observed at all doses including unirradiated cells, indicating that the effect is not caused by X-rays and the comet assay based on the current tail parameters is not relevant to measure DNA damage at various stages of the cell cycle. The results of dose response curves showed a linear decrease in the comet fluorescence with the X-ray dose. This observation provides a basis for estimating the fraction of damaged DNA, based on the fluorescence decrement induced by ionizing radiation. The results of this new approach showed a linear increase in DNA damage with dose, at various stages of the cell cycle, with rates, which vary in the following order G0 > G2/M > S/G1 cells. These results suggest that G0 and G2/M cells are the most sensitive to X-rays among all phases of the cell cycle and suggest synchronization of cells at these phases to increase the cellular radiosensitivity during radiotherapy. Modelling mass and heat transfer in nano-based cancer hyperthermia

    No full text
We derive a sophisticated mathematical model for coupled heat and mass transport in the tumour microenvironment and we apply it to study nanoparticle delivery and hyperthermic treatment of cancer. The model has the unique ability of combining the following features: (i) realistic vasculature; (ii) coupled capillary and interstitial flow; (iii) coupled capillary and interstitial mass transfer applied to nanoparticles; and (iv) coupled capillary and interstitial heat transfer, which are the fundamental mechanisms governing nano-based hyperthermic treatment. This is an improvement with respect to previous modelling approaches, where the effect of blood perfusion on heat transfer is modelled in a spatially averaged form. We analyse the time evolution and the spatial distribution of particles and temperature in a tumour mass treated with superparamagnetic nanoparticles excited by an alternating magnetic field. By means of numerical experiments, we synthesize scaling laws that illustrate how nano-based hyperthermia depends on tumour size and vascularity. In particular, we identify two distinct mechanisms that regulate the distribution of particle and temperature, which are characterized by perfusion and diffusion, respectively

The high-order Shifted Boundary Method and its analysis

    No full text
The Shifted Boundary Method (SBM) is an approximate domain method for boundary value problems, in the broader class of unfitted/embedded/immersed methods, that has proven efficient in handling partial differential equation problems with complex geometries. The key feature of the SBM is a shift in the location where boundary conditions are applied - from the true to a surrogate boundary - and an appropriate modification (again, a shift) of the value of the boundary conditions, in order to reduce the consistency error. This paper presents the high-order version of the method, its mathematical analysis, and numerical experiments. The proposed method retains optimal accuracy for any order of the finite element interpolation spaces despite the surrogate boundary is piecewise linear. As such, the proposed approach bypasses the problematic issue of meshing complex geometries with high-order body-fitted boundary representations, without the need of complex data structures for the integration on cut cells

Abstract This study discusses the strategies used by Islamic Religious Education teachers to improve the quality of congregational prayers of female students at SMA Nabil Husein Samarinda. Some of the problems faced by several female students at SMA Nabil Husein Samarinda are being undisciplined, not participating in wiridan, being unprepared, and being noisy during congregational prayers. All of these problems affect the quality of congregational prayers. This study aims to improve the quality of congregational prayers of female students at SMA Nabil Husein Samarinda. This study is descriptive qualitative, meaning it aims to provide a complete picture of the subject. The data sources in this study were the Principal, Islamic Religious Education Teacher, Deputy Curriculum, and six female students at SMA Nabil Husein Samarinda. The data analysis technique is qualitative data analysis which is carried out interactively and periodically until finished, when the data becomes saturated. The results of the study indicate that Islamic Religious Education teachers use four strategies to improve the quality of congregational prayers. These strategies include punishment, habituation, role models, and advice strategies. Five indicators are used as a reference in supporting this effort including solemnity in prayer, harmony of movements between congregations, accuracy of reading, physical and mental presence, and behavior and attitude after prayer. Based on the results of the study, this effort was able to improve the quality of congregational prayer of female students actively and consistently, discipline them to be present on time, and encourage positive changes in their attitudes and behavior. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    No full text
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
