An update of the mythical figures of "aller-retour" in Alfred Döblin, Jorge Semprún and Vercors works

German doctor of Jewish origin Alfred Döblin, young Spanish resistance fighter and communist Jorge Semprún, and writer-publisher Vercors (Jean Bruller) did not know each other and have nothing in common. However, all three went through the Second World war, through exile, clandestinity, or the concentration camp experience. Each contributed to the fight against Nazism but also paid the price. Among these three men, only Döblin was already a confirmed writer. However, they all produced works from 1945 onwards that were marked, if not deeply influenced, by these events. Thus, historical events present to us an exile, a deportee, and a spokesman for ghosts. Following these experiences, the stories studied here, although diverse in their conception, scenario, narrative, and style, are nevertheless marked by the same trauma of displacement, both in their journey and in their attempt to return. How could the outward journey be transcribed? Is there a possibility of returning to the life they once knew? Traditional values, identity quest, ontological questioning, subversion of discourse and myths: these are the paths explored in these texts, which are disturbingly topical

    Plaidoyer pour un monde métis

Nuselovici previously wrote two books (with François Laplantine) approaching 'métissage' (cross-cultural hybridity) within the framework of cultural anthropology. This one had another goal : to present 'métissage' as a possibility for a new being-together relevant to contemporary multicultural societies by studying examples from sociological as well as aesthetical realities (in music and literature)

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Order and disorder in Caribbean consciousness through French and English Caribbean literature (1981-2017) : a comparative approach

If the caribbean world is geographically presented in its archipelagic form, the fact remains that the convergences in historical, sociological, anthropological and literary terms are more numerous than the differences in the analysis of its components. We have thus proceeded to a cartography of the caribbean imagination and consciousness in a transnational descriptive approach confronting Francophone and Anglophone authors from caribbean territories. The list of themes common to these writings, which includes history, a caribbean obsession in view of its erased and fragmented nature, childhood, a fertile source for the memorial chronicle, the exile with which most of the authors are confronted, spirituality, lively and composite, and finally madness, a bearer of meaning, has been organised into trials and answers to what can be called the caribbean chaos that each of the authors translates and deciphers in his or her own way

This thesis aims to deepen the study of self-translation and translingual literary creation in the twentieth century, conceived as manifestations of the emergence of a feminist literary and authorial consciousness. The research examines the significance and implications of these practices through a corpus of women writers from three distinct political contexts: Soviet Russia, Fascist Italy, and the Puerto Rican independence movement. The theoretical contribution of this research is anchored in poststructuralist linguistic and literary thought, with particular attention to textual genetics in the study of self-translation drafts. This framework brings to light a neglected facet of dissident literature which, through the practice of self-translation linked to the condition of exile engages with issues of gender equality, both sexual and textual, in literature. From this perspective, and informed by poststructuralist-inspired feminine psychoanalytic theory, textual analyses aim to uncover specific traits in the sextualized embodiment of the works of Elsa Triolet, Alba de Céspedes, and Giannina Braschi. The adopted methodology follows a dual comparative logic: on the one hand, between the two versions of a given work; on the other hand, between the self-translations or translingual texts of different authors. This approach serves to challenge the theoretical and methodological paradigms of comparative literature, based on the principles of horizontality and verticality, in order to propose a poietic specificity of the comparative and translational act that is more circular. The aim is to show that, through the lens of Feminist Translation Studies, self-translation offers a way to question the act of translation beyond dominant binary and monolingual paradigms
