Nonlinear Gaussian process tomography with imposed non-negativity constraints on physical quantities for plasma diagnostics
ORCID 0000-0002-6479-049XWe propose a novel tomographic method, nonlinear Gaussian process tomography (nonlinear GPT), that uses the Laplace approximation to impose constraints on non-negative physical quantities, such as the emissivity in plasma optical diagnostics. While positive-valued posteriors have previously been introduced through sampling-based approaches in the original GPT method, our alternative approach implements a logarithmic Gaussian process (log-GP) for faster computation and more natural enforcement of non-negativity. The effectiveness of the proposed log-GP tomography is demonstrated through a case study using the Ring Trap 1 device, where log-GPT outperforms existing methods, standard GPT, and the minimum Fisher information methods in terms of reconstruction accuracy. The results highlight the effectiveness of nonlinear GPT for imposing physical constraints in applications to an inverse problem.journal articl

Disenchanting Japan: Japanese Futurity in Neuromancer and the Science Fiction of Masaki Goro
I apply enchantment theory to William Gibson's Neuromancer and several works by the Japanese SF author Masaki Goro to reveal shared assumptions about Japan as the locus of an emergent techno-social hybridity. Both Gibson and Masaki register signs of widespread disenchantment stemming from an increasingly technologically advanced society with a ruthlessly efficient take on capitalism. However, they mobilize their portrayals to different ends. I demonstrate that the authors diverge in their assessments of a technologically-mediated reenchantment. I also argue that the authors' use of conventions from hard-boiled fiction performs several functions. First, it ironically highlights the impossibility of nostalgia in such a future world, where the concept of home is divested of stability. Second, it evinces an anxiety over the transition from individualistic subjectivity to decentered posthumanity. Third, it reinforces the theme of the supplantation of the traditional nation-state by hyper-capitalist forms
Long-range scattering for a critical homogeneous type nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with time-decaying harmonic potentials
This paper is concerned with the final state problem for the homogeneous type
nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with time-decaying harmonic potential. The
nonlinearity has the critical order and is not necessarily the form of a
polynomial. In the case of the gauge-invariant power-type nonlinearity, the
first author proves that the equation admits a nontrivial solution that behaves
like a free solution with a logarithmic phase correction in [22]. In this
paper, we extend his result into the case with the general homogeneous
nonlinearity by the technique due to the Fourier series expansion introduced by
Masaki and the second author [26]. To adapt the argument in the aforementioned
paper, we develop a factorization identity for the propagator and require a
little stronger decay condition for the Fourier coefficients arising from the
harmonic potential. Moreover, in two or three dimensions, we improve the
regularity condition of the final data in [26, 28].Comment: 36 page

Q-band high-performance notch filters at 56 and 77 GHz notches for versatile fusion plasma diagnostics
0000-0003-2410-7550A six-pole Q-band waveguide filter with a notch frequency above the Q-band has been developed for plasma diagnostics. The previous paper [Nishiura et al., J. Instrum. 10, C12014 (2015)] reported that the notch frequency exists within the standard band. In this study, the newly required notch filter extends the function, which prevents a thorny wave from being mixed into an instrument beyond the standard bandwidth of the waveguide. The mode control technique for cavities realizes a deep and sharp filter shape for Q-band notch filters with 56 and 77 GHz notches, respectively. The former filter has an attenuation more than 50 dB at 56.05 GHz and a bandwidth of 1.1 GHz at −3 dB. The latter filter has an attenuation more than 55 dB at 76.95 GHz and a bandwidth of 1.6 GHz at −3 dB. The electron cyclotron emission imaging and the electron cyclotron emission (ECE) diagnostics for the Q-band implemented a pair of the fabricated filters and demonstrated the ECE measurement successfully in the intense stray radiation from a 56 GHz gyrotron
Absorption Analysis of Electron Cyclotron Waves in the Magnetospheric Plasma Device RT-1
The absorption efficiency of electron cyclotron heating is investigated theoretically and experimentally to understand the wave heating mechanisms under the overdense state and the density limit. The features of self-organizing mechanisms have been observed in the dipole confinement system [M. Nishiura et al., Nucl. Fusion 55, 053019 (2015)]. The modulated 2.45 GHz electromagnetic (EM) wave is applied to the RT-1 plasmas to evaluate the EM wave's absorption efficiency from the diamagnetic signals' response. The absorption efficiency maintains a constant 100% beyond the O-mode's cutoff density. However, it decreases rapidly near the 1.6 × 1017 m−3 line-averaged density, which is twice higher than the 2.45 GHz O-mode cutoff. At less than 0.6 × 1017 m−3, the absorption efficiency simulated by a ray-tracing code in a two-dimensional model explains the experimental absorption efficiency. However, it deviates from the experimental value near the cutoff density and is more significant at the density limit. We discuss the difference between the experimental and numerical results
