Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Issues of Food Safety: Are “Organic” Apples Better? 2017.

    • Organically grown foods have become increasingly popular with the consumer because of a desire to improve nutrition and prevent environmental contamination. • Fruits and vegetables are cultivated according to different approaches: conventional (chemical-based agriculture), integrated farm management, organic agriculture. • Experimental evidence suggests that higher levels of micronutrients and phytonutrients are associated with organically grown fruit and vegetables. • Cultivation systems affect the amount of chemical residues in products and the risk of its possible biological contamination, whereas synthetic pesticide and additive residues can be avoided in properly managed organic systems. • Overall, however, the differences between foods grown under different agricultural methods may not be sufficient to declare organic produce as superior quality food when compared to their conventional or integrated counterparts. • Concerns about the consumption of transgenic foods (GE) are rising among consumers and this situation is aggravated in the USA by the reluctance of governmental authorities to enforce labelling of genetically engineered (GE) foods

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Manuel Neri & the assertion of modern figurative sculpture

    No full text
The exploration of the human figure has been the pursuit of artists for millennia. Manuel Neri (b. 1930), a California native and former student of Richard Diebenkorn and Nathan Oliveira, has spent a lifetime accentuating the gesture, surface, and materiality of the figure. He renders his work in several different mediums that include plaster, marble, bronze, and paper. This exhibition, drawn from and celebrating gifts donated to the museum by The Manuel Neri Trust, provides a glimpse into the artist's creative process and his quest to define the figure on his own terms. Manuel Neri is known for his prolonged artistic engagement with the figure in a variety of materials, starting with plaster in the late 1950s and moving into bronze and marble. The seven sculptures in the outdoor installation reference Neri's origins with plaster and his expressionistic manipulation of the medium. By casting plaster in bronze, tactile surfaces are preserved and enhance

A fine-tuning of Sappho was necessary, after new papyrus acquisitions have integrated the poetess' corpus, dated glorious editions and updated a critical debate that introduced new views in the study of ancient poetry and forced to rethink the productive dynamics, performative occasions, contexts and social functions, literary dimension of archaic Greek lyric. Therefore, Camillo Neri does not limit himself to update previous works since Sappho is in the singular position of object a) of good, although partial, critical editions, but without translation and commentary, b) of good translations, but without critical text and often without commentary, c) of good commentaries, but without critical text and/or translation. The introduction addresses all the issues related to Sappho: biography, contexts and functions of her poetry, metre, language and style, tradition, history of her centuries-old fortune. The text proposes the first complete collection of all the fragments and all the testimonia, with an extensive critical apparatus, Italian translation, perpetual commentary. Finally, the book contains a conspectus metrorum, a large array of indices (verborum, sources, locorum and nominum et notabilium) and a rich and updated bibliography
